GentlemanLoser , in A 96-year-old federal judge is barred from hearing cases in a bitter fight over her mental fitness

Why aren’t we more suspicious of the personality type that wants to work til they die at their post?

theworstshepard ,

Sounds like you are very suspicious and so are others or this wouldn’t be a debate worth posting about.

I guess the idea that some people love their work, live for it and derive huge satisfaction from it is a really unusual concept 🤷

TurboDiesel ,
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

Do you honestly think she’s doing some kind of serious, fulfilling legal work at 90-goddamn-6? I’d be more willing to bet she’s got an army of clerks and assistants doing the heavy lifting and she spends her afternoon signing things in between pudding cups.

I don’t for a second believe she’s sitting on that bench for the love of the game. I’d bet anything she just doesn’t want Biden appointing a successor.

YeetPics ,

Ever drive behind a 96 year old?

Idgaf how much satisfaction they glean, it’s a risk and unacceptable.

AlwaysNowNeverNotMe ,
@AlwaysNowNeverNotMe@kbin.social avatar

A genuinely laughable idea.

sizzler ,

I do agree but for “some”* retiree aged people that still work, work is their drive that helps keep them going. Doesn’t mean they should but, it does help keep them (selfishly?) alive.

*Read those in privileged jobs. Not supermarket workers.

He used to be good but like many they started doubling down on their beliefs during the pandemic and quite frankly they become mentally unwell.

Tygr , in Bodycam: Pregnant woman accused of shoplifting shot by police

Is this where society is heading? Rampant theft resolved with murder to save corporations?

To them, this probably sounds easier than lowering prices, reducing CEO’s millions in pay and propping up stock prices.

zaph ,

The governor of Florida and presidential hopeful said looters will be shot on sight. So no, it’s not where we’re headed because we’ve passed that destination and it’s normal. Property is firmly above people.

kautau ,

There’s a reason why Militech and Arasaka are the biggest players in the cyberpunk rpg universe. Once corporatocracy reigns supreme and public funding is gone they reap profits off private security, as intended. We’re just now seeing the horizon of “defund the police” becoming “hire a PMC as your ‘police force’”

LukeMedia ,

Reminds me of the news in cyberpunk 2077 telling how “warning shots to the knee” became legal for police

orrk ,

this may surprise you, but the police started out as PMC union-busting operations

kautau , (edited )

Oh lol I’m totally aware. There was a time in history where striking didn’t mean you’d be fired but instead fired upon. Just sucks to see it now coming back full circle

grayman ,

Yes. To get back to normality, we must pass through this extreme, which is the necessary counter to defunding and demonizing the police as opposed to holding only the bad ones responsible for their actions. We’ll be in this state until we remove qualified immunity. So it will probably take a while.

    Oh yeah, sure, they increase prices because of “theft.” They’re honest corporations who would never increase prices for another reason like greed or price gouging.

    FlyingSquid , in Three found dead at remote Rocky Mountain campsite were trying to escape society, stepsister says
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Yeah, well fuck them. Except the kid. Fuck them for bringing the kid. You want to escape society, fine. But bring the kid after you’ve figured out how to survive in the wilderness.

    Nintendo ,

    can you even imagine? in these situations the kid would be lucky if it died first. if not, the kid was kept alive by the adults long enough for it to watch the adults die, then the kid had to die alone in the tent while it waited in the cold just for nobody to come and help. poor thing. I’m terrified just writing this out.

    Astroturfed ,

    People can’t survive in the wilderness. At least without a decent size community to support them. There are folks who make it years alone with training and knowledge, but you are always just one mistake or circumstance away from death. Humans are not built to survive alone.

    fkn ,

    The only way a small number of people survive alone is by having money and a large group of people to buy things from and have those things brought to them by the large group… Oh wait… That’s not alone… Right right. My bad.

    prole , in S.F. bakery won't serve cops, police union claims. Store says it's about the guns, not the cops

    Even if it were a policy against serving cops, didn’t the Supreme Court literally just rule that a business can deny any group?

    If you can refuse to serve gay people, you can refuse to serve cops. This shit goes both ways.

    Lobotomie ,

    Yes because homosexuals could just leave their gay in their car amirite

    Right… why do they have to exist in public… /s 🧐🤔😭

    Ghostalmedia ,
    @Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

    True, but court would claim the previous ruling was focused on contracted custom services and freedom of speech.

    It would be pretty easy for them to craft an argument in favor of letting the cops in, as hypocritical as it may be.

    robbotlove ,

    this is what being conservative is all about. There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

    prole ,

    So then the Masterpiece Cake Shop ruling, maybe.

    That one might apply better. Same outcome.

    FlyingSquid , in Florida is spending $61.6 million to bulletproof Capitol windows
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    “There is a real cognitive dissonance here… we’re passing policies that make people less safe and around more guns,” Eskamani said. “The policies the Legislature pushes don’t make us more safe.”

    Oh, I don’t think there’s cognitive dissonance at all. This goes with their pro-gun stance. “If you want to be protected, be prepared.” So, of course, you combat guns by spending huge amounts of taxpayer money on bulletproof windows. The other solution, reducing the amount of guns in the community, is not something they could even begin to entertain as an idea.

    btaf45 , in Trump surrenders in Georgia election subversion case

    “I wanted to be inmate number 42069!!!”

    utopianfiat , in Mum calls out system over baby-faced rapist's light sentence

    The judge’s rationale is that he’d be victimized because of his appearance. If the justice system can’t trust itself not to allow extrajudicial punishment by other inmates enough to give people the sentences they deserve, isn’t that their fucking problem and not the victims’?

    Fredselfish ,
    @Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

    Exactly this fuck should get the 20 fucking yesrs or at minimum the 6. He will reoffend and thanks to that stupid judge it will be soon.

    utopianfiat ,

    And he’s still going to have a babyface the second time he rapes a kid, what’ll they do then?

    Fredselfish ,
    @Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

    It could have that babyface all his life depending on genetics. The judges take was fucking dumb. Besides I hear they protect pedos in prison because no matter how they look they will get fucked up.

    So all this judge did was hurt the victim. Shame on him.

    BadAdvice ,

    Judge should join him tbh. Incompetence like that cannot be tolerated. Start throwing these chucklefucks in prison for judicial misconduct. It starts with abolishing qualified AND absolute immunity.

    FuglyDuck , in Parents are smashing eggs on their kids heads in new TikTok prank. Doctors say they should stop.
    @FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

    Parents really shouldn’t be posting videos of their kids on the interment. As someone who occasionally has to sort through applicants at work… yes, we do see these videos. We also see their baby photos and their graduation photos. If that creeps you out… it creeps me out, too.

    Gradually_Adjusting ,
    @Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

    We all act like everyone else is a stranger and we’re alone in the “city” of the internet, but the actual dynamic plays out in a much more “townie” manner. We should act more like inhabitants of a small island where everyone knows each other.

    Chetzemoka ,

    Having literally been an inhabitant of a small island at one point in my life is the exact reason I have no active social media presence that is not pseudonymous. Life is different when you know you might suddenly be recognized by a stranger at the grocery store who saw your public comment on Facebook.

    Gradually_Adjusting ,
    @Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

    I think we’d be more civil to each other if more of us had that mindset, or any sense that our words reflect on us.

    Lesbanon_James ,
