sounds like your problem is likely a combo of trying bare arch and also an nvidia card. i’d recommend Pop!OS as i hear it’s the best out of the box experience for nvidia owners, and if you want to stay arch based i’d try EndeavourOS as it’s arguably the most mature and stable arch based distro today, it’s what i use but i also have amd not nvidia so i can’t speak for the nvidia experience for endeavour. maybe you want to wait a while before you try again just so you’re not burning out on the frustration, too. good luck!

nublug ,

nvidia only very recently opened up their drivers to open source dev, so the open source drivers available right now are still based on reverse engineering and they don’t work super great. there are proprietary drivers from nvidia but they are not easy to install and configure and popos handles that for you on install.

got death stranding when it was free for a day on epic a while ago, been playing it for the last few weeks pretty nonstop and just finished the story. i’ve always been a kojima fan for mgs but oh my god this is magnificent. an absolute masterpiece, imho. i get it’s not for everyone but i’ve had a blast and may immediately do a very hard offline second playthrough. definitely recommend, especially if you can grab it free or heavy discount.

nublug , (edited )

online stuff smattered everywhere. plenty of people still playing and i imagine a good handful also snagged it like i did when epic gave it away for a day. there’s also older stuff like well placed safe houses and joke bridges on flat land or mountain peaks that have an insane number of likes so they must’ve been there for years.

also there’s a page where you can see the players you’ve interacted with, your likes for them and their likes for you and it also shows last login date, and most of mine are online recently like me with some maybe last logged in in january, or late last year. i did see one who hasn’t played since '22 but they’ve still got stuff in my world, too, so i think there’s some playtime syncing where a bridge or whatever might actually be destroyed in their game if they logged in today but since it was there from hour 5 to 25 of their playthrough you’ll get it at hour 5 and will stay if you repair it unlike they did. but that’s a guess.

edit: for quick reference when you log in you get a summary of people liking your stuff and yesterday i saw “75 players are pleased with you, 7328 likes”. so definitely still active. also no spoilers but there are a game mechanic or two that affects how many other players you are connected to, so your actions in game can determine how many people’s stuff shows up, as well.

nublug ,

yeah sure. there’s the connection level of each knot itself, with higher levels giving you more chiral bandwidth and i’m pretty sure gives you higher numbers of online structures in that area too, but i’m not certain about that.

other than that tho there’s bridge contracts which state they give you a stronger connection to that player so you both share more of your structures with each other. i actually forgot about that until the last few days and after adding the max 30 contracts i def have more structures.

i also suspect that if you like online structures actively rather than just letting it get a like when you use it the game gives you more other players and structures as well, but i’m not certain on that one either. it makes sense to me what with the ‘likers get liked’ sign mechanic and how the amount of likes you can get overall is a skill to improve as well as your time to give likes increasing with skill as well.

being a free software advocate and worried about ‘fracturing’ seems at odds, bud. fracturing is an inherent perk of the system, imho.

nublug ,

bonkers this shit has 10 upvotes lmao

nublug ,

bud, they explicitly said that’s a linux implementation of microsoft’s recall, which is itself only like a week old. it’s not at all representative of all ai on linux, you’re being purposely obtuse.

using llm ai for tech support is monumentally stupid lmao

if being incorrectly called a nazi makes you be a nazi, you weren’t incorrectly called a nazi.

nublug ,

tbf there’s a lot more you can do on a pc than btowse the internet, and especially considering the time period represented visually and the post text referencing dwarf fortress, i suspect they mean games, single player games particularly.

aiden aiden braiden bootus borts borts is poetry

further, heroic games launcher isn’t just for epic and gog games, you can install any exe. i use it for the ea games launcher because the lutris script was broken at the time. and in the wine manager in hgl settings you can choose either wine-ge latest or proton-ge latest (or whatever number version) as your default layer, which you can also change per game/app if you have trouble.

edit: and also you can set it to add to steam so you can still just use steam as your main launcher, for example on steam deck or using a media center rig in big picture mode.

nublug ,

“free yourself from your oppressor before we recognize your existence” is pretty goddamn fucked up.

nublug ,

i just have it set to always on. there’s no reason you need the bluer light in the day and you get used to it. less eye strain is less eye strain.

wdym? he wants nathan yahoo’s erections held what’s so hard to understand?

nublug ,

how funny seeing cryptofash use the same tactics re criticism as their open fash brethren. “we are all domestic terrorists”

nublug ,

steam’s cache of installed/downloaded/updates to games can get corrupted and cause this. try the ‘clear download cache’ option in settings and then restart steam and try to uninstall a game again.

nublug ,

everyone else has great responses but i want to address the snappiness of kde. it’s fairly common advice to disable file indexing, you can find it in the settings app. it can cause some desktop sluggishness and really isn’t necessary.

nublug ,

fyi you can play fortnite in a single gpu passthrough win10 vm on linux if you configure your vm to hide the hypervisor status.

nublug ,

maybe, i have amd.

for ref i used this: superuser.com/…/hiding-virtual-machine-status-fro…

but i can’t seem to find any posts saying hiding vm doesn’t work with intel and multiple posts about hiding vm status with intel specific instructions on a quick ddg search so you might want to try again.

it’s jif. every argument for gif is wrong, and it sounds awkward af, like you got swiped by candlejack mid-wor

nublug ,

we say jay-peg for jpeg, pee en gee for png, and ay tee em for atm. none of these are based on the pronunciation of the words they represent.

nublug ,

yet you participate in society i am very smart

nublug ,

awesome!

fyi: i used garuda for a few months and while i loved it, i did have some stability problems and couldn’t solve it and also found some garuda team on their forums to be fairly rude in some cases so i switched to endeavourOS. it’s very very similar to garuda, also arch based, except i’ve had no stability issues and found their website faq and articles and forum much more helpful and kind to noobs than most distros and i liked that a lot.

this isn’t to say don’t use garuda or anything but that if you do have issues then endeavourOS is an easy sidestep with also great gaming performance and similarly solid theming.

also if you need to use EA app i recommend installing through heroic games launcher; the lutris script seems fucked for now.

also also look up setting up a single gpu passthrough windows vm and how to hide hypervisor for any games that flat out don’t work on proton like fortnite or in my weird case sniper elite v2, and i think also pubg is borked still. some anticheat games are working but sadly some are still being stubborn. this solves that without dual booting or windows getting it’s own partition.

nublug ,

uh, 3:30.

nublug ,

uh 1.458333, 3’s repeating of course

so that’s 1:27:30 when accounting for minutes instead of fractional ten-hours.

that is, of course if it’s a 10 hour DAY clock; if it’s a 10 hour am/pm clock then it’s 2.91666 6’s repeating fractional ten-am/pm-hours which is 2:54:59 am.

i think. i’m not super good at math, but i tried.

nublug ,

heroic games launcher with the latest proton ge version selected in the wine manager tab installs and runs ea app, bf1, bf3, and sims4 no problem for me. don’t have titanfall to test it specifically.

nublug ,

bumping bc ea app and games running flawlessly when installed through heroic games is the solution to op’s problem imho. am i shadow banned in this sub or something? o_O

nublug ,

try installing ea app through heroic games launcher, works flawlessly for me.

nublug ,

counterpoint: the closeups are meant to be seen as simultaneous, it’s a sort of psuedo slo-mo so you can see each character’s reaction in a fast situation.

nublug ,

yeah i’m sure not voting definitely will change things

oh wait

and before you go on about doing other stuff than voting, you know that voting doesn’t keep you from also doing those things? not voting is just bad, no good. you’re not giving the state the finger you’re laying down and saying ‘do with me what you will idc.’

nublug ,

yeah except no, only hexbear in the past year or so has suddenly decided that winnie insult is racist, when it started in china because that mofo looks exactly like winnie and because his tyrant ass self banned all mention or image of winnie the pooh in reponse it barbara streisanded to the worldwide zeitgeist. it was never about race, it was always about tyrannical overreach.

nublug ,

except winnie the pooh isn’t already a slur, and it kinda does matter the history of the usage of a term if you’re trying to determine the intent and usage of it.

literally nobody used the winnie the pooh insult against him because of his race, it was always because he literally looks like the character, and then threw a fit and banned all mention or image of a worldwide-known and beloved fictional character. because he’s an unstable tyrant.

nublug ,

none of their posts make them appear like a reactionary, just this one winnie the pooh thing that only hexbear has decided makes you definitely a right winger.

nublug ,

endeavourOS kde is gorgeous and by far the most stable and ready-out-of-the-box arch version i’ve tried.

also the eos-packagelist --install [desktop environment] command lets you install the other endeavourOS themed DEs or WMs just like the distro installer does so you don’t have to reinstall or work on themes yourself if you want to change after install.

pipewire is also ready to go and i think it uses some kind of realtime thing, but i’m using the default kernel so i don’t know that it’s a low latency kernel level thing by default.

games have also been top notch for me, the only tweaking i’ve done is adding -vulkan launch options to steam games.

overall i highly recommend it. i’m using kde but tried cinnamon, i3, and sway (though community editions like sway are going unsupported soon) and they are all similarly well-themed.

nublug ,

i got mine from using a random word generator until i hit one i liked the look of

similarly if you’re using arrow keys to move the cursor where you want, ctrl + arrow key moves you along word by word instead of letter by letter.

Diagnose system crash during gameplay?

I’m trying to play Horizon Zero Dawn on OpenSUSE TW but every 10 minutes or so my entire system crashes leaving me with both monitors displaying a green screen and forcing me to pull the plug on my PC. This appears to be the only game with the issue. I’ve tried multiple versions of Proton including GE but all suffer from the...

nublug ,

sounds like maybe your power supply might be dying or your system is pulling more than that psu can handle. mine recently blew a capacitor with a loud bang and magic electronics smoke after a few months of odd problems with shutting down in the middle of an intensive game. i think the fan died about a year ago bc my temps had been higher than they used to and after it popped the side of the case by the psu was very warm. i came to find that my gpu upgrade pushed my power draw to 450w when my psu was only rated for 530w and not 750w like i thought i remembered. makes sense it was pushed to it’s limit. maybe recheck your power requirements with an online psu calc and compare to your psu rating. and also look to see if its fan is still running and not clogged up with dust.

nublug ,

that’s some nazi ass bullshit right there holy shit
