There should be no competition at all between these two. And if it weren’t for the complete fucking idiots that live here, it would be a landslide victory for common sense.

LucidNightmare ,

Thank you!

I don’t care if in legalese it is considered “wrong” to call a rapist a rapist.

Donald J. Trump is a pedophilic rapist and a rapist.

A spade is a fucking spade.

nomous ,

The only reason they couldn’t call him a rapist in the E. Jean Carroll case is because she was unable to say with 100% certainty that she was penetrated by his penis which is the definitions under NY law, it could have been his finger.

“Judge Kaplan clarified that the jury had found that Trump had raped Carroll according to the common definition of the word.”

So I agree, he rapes people, he’s a rapist.

Rapist and convicted felon, fraudulent business man and bankrupt casino owner, suspected sex trafficker, sycophant of tyrants and notorious golf cheat Donald J. Trump should have no chance in the upcoming presidential election. But because he dog whistles the right words and there are a whole lot of hateful people out there, here we are.

WhyDoYouPersist ,

CaptainEffort ,

Genuinely wondering, but I’m in a completely blue state. What’s the point of voting for the presidency where I live?

Obviously if I were in a swing state or red state I’d vote though, to be clear.

TheLadyAugust ,

You shouldn’t just be voting for the presidency and I mean, while you’re there you may as well for no extra effort. But otherwise, The popular vote helps show the opinion of the majority. It might feel like a drop in the ocean, but every ocean is made of drops.

fine_sandy_bottom ,

You can shift the overton window further left.

If the political spectrum runs from left to right, with a needle in the middle of whatever a given society finds acceptable, then major parties will align themselves immediately to either side around that needle.

This is how they can get as many votes as possible while differentiating from their opponents.

Your vote moves the needle further left.

Suppose 80% of the popular vote was blue. The republicans would be forced to chase that vote by moving their policies further left. The Dems would have to move even further left to differentiate themselves from the republicans.

Idiots on lemmy yelling you not to vote in order to teach your rep a lesson with your withdrawn support are naive to this well established political science.

ramble81 ,

By helping reinforce downstream ballot races too. Things start at a local level, look at what school boards and local judges are doing. But besides that it helps show numbers on a national level. Yea the electoral college still decides things but a large popular vote starts making a case against it especially if the electoral college is “close” in numbers.

danc4498 ,

The biggest challenge Democrats have had is that they want their policies to be good for everybody, even the people that hate them. This means democrats aren’t as excited about the policies and Republicans just hate everything they do no matter what.

The ACA was the perfect example of this. Dems could have done whatever they wanted, but chose a very conservative healthcare model. Dems were indifferent and Republicans just latched onto this as a lightning rod for their hatred.

Republicans on the other hand will give their base 100% of what they want with no compromise. If you didn’t vote for republicans, they don’t care what you want or how you feel. This gives their base massive enthusiasm.

aleph , (edited )
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

I wouldn’t go that far. Don’t forget that the main reason Biden had to be pressured to step down in the first place was that he had effectively been foisted on lukewarm voters and that his cognitive decline had been purposefully hidden for quite some time before the infamous debate.

Yes, it’s good that he finally agreed to bow out of the race, but he only did it after weeks of massive pressure from the media and from within his own party. Without that, he would most likely be the presumptive nominee today and the Democrats would still be getting creamed in the polls.

disguy_ovahea ,

Well, to benefit his own personal ambitions and to be able to pardon himself from all those pesky federal charges. Trump’s freedom may be on the line with this election, and he knows it.

krashmo ,

That’s what they said last time and look where he is now. Sure, he’s a convicted felon and that’s sort of fun to say but that’s more of a historical footnote than a meaningful development. There’s still been no serious consequences to his actions and if I were to place a bet on it I would put money on the chance that there never will be.

disguy_ovahea ,

There hasn’t been a Federal trial yet. It’s not that the charges “didn’t stick.” They haven’t been heard yet.

krashmo ,

Oh I’m fully aware of the situation but I don’t think that changes anything I said. Do you think he’ll do prison time or be forced to dissolve any of his businesses as restitution for any of his crimes? If not then all we’re really debating is the degree to which rich and powerful people are treated differently than the rest of us.

disguy_ovahea ,

I don’t know. Another one of his attorneys turned to testify against him in the election fraud case. The documents case could absolutely lead to jail time if Smith can push for another judge. Cannon can’t postpone indefinitely without repercussions.

As for payments, if he loses his appeal in NY, he’s on the hook for half a billion.

krashmo ,

Theoretically, sure, I just don’t see any of that happening. That’s not all that different from the situation four years ago and at minimum that speed difference is a big part of what I’m referring to. Someone who stole $5000 would have started serving their sentence three and a half years ago but we’re still talking about maybe getting everything to line up to possibly take action against Trump if things go our way. That’s bullshit even if he does go to prison and as we’ve already established I don’t think that’s going to happen.

ChickenLadyLovesLife ,

Saudi Arabia’s already given Trump $2 billion via his son-in-law (and that’s likely just the public part of what they’ve given him). He’s not going to give a shit about a few hundred million dollars judgement, even if it doesn’t die in the appeals process.

GreenSkree ,

Another one of his attorneys turned to testify against him in the election fraud case.

Are you talking about the fairly recent news about Jenna Ellis? Unless I’m mistaken, she’s cooperating with a different set of fake electors cases that’s based out of Arizona.

Even as someone who follows this stuff fairly regularly, it’s impossible to keep track of all of Trump’s criminal cases… and that’s just the stuff we know about that prosecutors have picked up.

The documents case could absolutely lead to jail time if Smith can push for another judge. Cannon can’t postpone indefinitely without repercussions.

If he loses the election and if the Supreme Court stays out of it, I’d agree.

He also has sentencing scheduled in September for his felony convictions, though I don’t have a clue what that will be or what appeal timeline and whatnot looks like.

It’s frustrating to see all of this move so slowly. I know these things take time, but it feels like there was no urgency in 2021 when he left office to deal with the election interference and numerous, publicly known, criminal acts.

ChickenLadyLovesLife ,

redhorsejacket ,

You might be getting confused with the circumstances around Brandon Lee’s death on the set of the Crow, which makes sense since that has been a hot topic when discussing the situation on Rust’s set. As I understand it, in the case of Lee’s death, they had taken live rounds and “converted” them to dummy rounds by removing the bullets, dumping out the gunpowder from the cartridge, and then reinstalling the bullets. However, they did not remove the primer from the cartridges, because they wanted the bottom of the cases to look pristine for shots where the revolver was loaded.

At some point, one of these “dummy” (but still very much not inert, thanks to the primer) rounds was accidentally fired. Because they had removed the propellent, only the primer detonated. This provided enough force to dislodge the bullet from the case, but not enough to expel it out the barrel. No one checked the barrel before a blank was loaded into weapon for the scene where Lee’s character was shot. Blank detonated, dummy bullet is dislodged, Lee is killed.

So, while both productions are staggering examples of safety protocol failures on film sets, the circumstances are differ in the details.

Admittedly, this is hypocritical as hell because police don’t bother to follow up on felons who own guns, and even infrequent marijuana use prohibits people from purchasing firearms. But, it’s just good sense for someone who is addicted to crack to not own guns.

Even with the details of this case, my understanding is that it all started because he was on drugs, and didn’t have his gun safely stored and his then girlfriend, also a drug user, took it and threw it in a trash can in a public place, which is an excellent reason not to let drug users have guns.

I’ll also add that if people were actually worried about the competency of people buying guns to own guns, then it would make far more sense to put the burden of proof on the person buying to prove their competency. But that’s not what this law is really about.
