oxjox , in New panic alarm system at Georgia H.S. saved lives during shooting, officials say. Advocates want it nationwide.
@oxjox@lemmy.ml avatar

This is why republicans are opposed to reasonable gun control. These emergencies are money making opportunities. The more our lives are under threat, the more opportunity there is for businesses to cash in on our fears.

Smith said the panic alarm system at Apalachee, powered by Georgia-based safety solutions company Centegix, has only been in place at the school for about a week.

Other companies also offer technologies that claim to improve real-time reporting in emergency situations, NBC News has previously reported.

Centegix, in particular, advocates for Alyssa’s Law — a measure, passed in seven states and introduced in nine others, that would require schools to install silent panic alarms that are directly linked to law enforcement.

I mean, yes it’s fantastic that we have these technologies to notify emergency services but, what are we doing to actually prevent the emergencies?

We can pass laws requiring states to spend money on buying things from other businesses but we refuse to pass laws actually preventing the emergencies from occurring.

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

It sure would be nice if this kind of alarm system was a part of a broader initiative to make schools safer instead of the only thing. I’m still dumbfounded a father had no qualms with and was able to purchase a gun for his 14 year old after the FBI visited him on account of his child’s terroristic threats. Can’t possibly make it more difficult for these kinds of dipshits to get guns though, oh no

Part of choosing a free society is giving people the freedom to do bad things.

“Free society” is an oxymoron. Pick one or the other.

NatakuNox ,
@NatakuNox@lemmy.world avatar

Even more so when that Free society is designed to create poor, uneducated, unhealthy, and mentally unwell people. Any proactive solutions to any societal issue requires the signing of a social contract, which means lose of some “freedoms”. 2A advocates want all the benefits of society but want none of the responsibility!

turbowafflz ,

I wonder if they will replace the pages with anything that explains that the site was seized and taken down for being part of election interference and misinformation.

Would be cool to see all the old links and copy/pasted fascist text walls get updated.

nulluser ,

This was my initial thought as well. It would be relatively easy to put up some text explaining what happened to try and undo some of the damage.

evatronic ,

There’s a problem there, though. The propaganda was basically various versions of “The government (when run by Democrats) is bad, don’t trust the government.”

If they put up a notice saying, “This domain was seized, here’s the real facts!” the target of the propaganda isn’t going to buy it for a hot minute.

If they put up replacement content that doesn’t mention the government seizure, tha target of the propaganda is already primed to shout, “Fake news!” at anything that disputes their existing worldview.

It’s best to just let those domains return like a 504 Internal Server Error and die a quiet death.

nulluser ,

While I agree with you for the most part, I don’t think it could make it any worse, and it could rescue some people that aren’t brainwashed yet.

As an American, I get it. Personally I’m very weary of being out in large crowds at this point, which sucks because, you know, life.

It may ultimately be a subset of our population which has directly or indirectly caused this situation, but make no mistake: we put ourselves in the hole.

curbstickle ,

While I agree with regards to school shootings, this has a lot of other value as well, such as medical emergencies. I think its great to have a system like this available, I just wish the reasoning behind it was more for those medical emergencies and less because school shootings are all too common…

I’m glad it helped in Georgia. I hope its never needed for the same reason ever again - though with the idiots out there that think guns are more important than kids, its likely my hopes will be dashed soon.

This is shameful. This was part of a weekly protest at Beita. These protests have been going on for years and mostly without incident. I’ve seen them firsthand. It’s primarily symbolic. There is stone throwing in the direction of soldiers, but usually dozens or hundreds of feet away. It can obviously be dangerous when tensions are high, but this kind of incident should not happen.

@whotookkarl@lemmy.world avatar

“Ope, I voted” is a pretty good one too. I normally don’t take a sticker but either of those I’d hold onto.

zabadoh ,

What is the meaning behind “Ope”?

Is that a local expression?

Kiernian ,

Pronounced like “hope” without the “h”, it is indeed a local (Midwestern U.S.) "expression.

It is, mostly, a “shorthand apology”.

“Ope, just gonna squeeze right past you and grab the ranch” (dressing) or “Ope, grab the butter while you’re up whydoncha?”, or “Ope, I spose it’s about that time.”

In the context of that sticker, it’s more like a “sorry, not sorry” but less intense and more polite.

zabadoh , (edited )

Wow, thanks! I wouldn’t have guessed some of those uses.

I’m guessing that it’s short for (I h)ope (you don’t mind, but…)

MeowCatPlzMeowBack , (edited )

I’d add to this great explanation by including that ‘Ope’ doubles as an ‘oh shit’ or ‘whoops’ expression.

Examples include dropping something, tripping, making a mistake, and also used in situations where we feel rude asking someone to do something. As you said, the classic ’ope, gonna squeeze past yah’ is because our weird northern hospitality makes us feel uncomfortable being rude so we say ‘ope’ to signal we’re aware that we are inconveniencing the other person. Even though ‘ganders will honk at each other for other shit, we don’t typically like to be seen as infringing on someone else’s autonomy given the midwest is a big ‘don’t tell me what to do and I won’t tell you what to do’ culture.

On the topic, I’d also like to state for the record that Eminem is saying ‘Ope! There goes gravity’ which has a completely different connotation than ‘oh there goes gravity’ as non-midwesterners often translate it to. Oh is too passive compared to Ope which, again, is in the ‘oh shit that was unintentional’ meaning that only the power of Ope can express. I know this seems like such a small issue but it enrages ‘ganders to a degree unfathomable to those outside the midwest, so best steer clear of that. Like our geese, we can get real uppity over random shit, if you piss us off all that northern hospitality melts away to be replaced with HONK.

p.s. if you don’t finish off the “ope, ‘spose it’s that time” without slapping your thighs with both hands as you get up, I’m pretty sure you can be charged with a war crime ‘round these parts.
