X4’s linux support is such a good thing to have. The engine does struggle with interrupts like overlays or native OS dialogs. It refreshes everything, each time, but it’s a small con.

hornedfiend ,

Buying windows is like self flagellation. You have to be a masochist to enjoy it,especially the apologetic users.

Microsoft Edge nags users with a 3D banner to change Windows 11's default browser (www.windowslatest.com)

Would you use Edge as your default browser on Windows 11 if Microsoft nags you with a 3D banner? Microsoft thinks you would. In a new experiment, which appears to be rolling out to Edge stable on Windows 11, Microsoft has turned on a banner that uses 3D graphics to promote the browser....

They should provide a button “Switch to Linux”,that would download a mint iso (or a distro of choice), ask you to plug in a USB stick and input a few config options, reboot and auto install de distro with btrfs over the windows partition.

I would pay to see that featue.

hornedfiend ,

Time to switch to odysee fully I guess

hornedfiend , (edited )

Fair enough. I completely forgot about peertube. Been using newpipe predominantly and odysee was the first alternative that came to mind.

Thanks for reminding me about peer tube. A client recommendation would be great. I’ve used p2play.

Edit: I actually looked into the whole odysee debacle and it’s disgusting,so I will try to use peertube (newpipe also supports it,but, again, completely forgot about it).

The answer in pretty easy: release the server component, even if it’s closed source, for people to be able to self host,or use hosting services. That would be the nice way out of this, but seems they would rather be dicks about it.

hornedfiend ,

Going to terminate account now. Good luck with that shit Paypal

hornedfiend ,

i went Pixel and never looked back. Samsung was the worst for me,not even considering that Knox crap.

what is a vaccine injury? I vaccinated my son with all the required vaccines and he has yet to be sick.

in some countries that is mandatory to be able to send your child to any school.

EA wants to place in-game ads in its full-price AAA games, again (www.techspot.com)

EA has tried this before, with predictable results. In 2020, EA Sports UFC 4 included full-screen ads for the Amazon Prime series The Boys that would appear during ‘Replay’ moments. These were absent from the game when it launched, with EA introducing the ads about a month later, thereby preventing them from being...

hornedfiend ,

I’m really struggling to remember when 's the last time I played an EA game. I can’t really…

Let them monetize everything until oblivion,no one’s gonna stop them anyway,so they might as well slowly die.

hornedfiend ,

is there any reason to update to 8a from pixel 6,or should I wait until 9 or 10?

hornedfiend ,

I don’t particularly hate epic, but ~90% of my games are on steam,so I don’t really install the rest cause I don’t need to.

that being said,I will buy it when and if it comes to steam. if not,oh well…

hornedfiend ,

archinstall is the best. I’ve been using it out of laziness for a while and it’s downright amazing.

hornedfiend ,

or 0.99/post.each retweet would cost you an additional 0.49. you pay less, you get less.

hornedfiend ,

isn’t Garuda an arch based distro? technically it’s not a standalone distro, but a customized arch,so I can’t see them as Gentoo, arch, fedora(rhel), debian. same is Ubuntu for example.

hornedfiend ,

Today I installed arch on my dad’s computer. he can’t use one,but it’s a win nonetheless.

hornedfiend ,

This comment is simply wrong. Linux doesn’t compete with Windows desktop because it’s already ahead of it.

hornedfiend ,

gonna wait for the next big thing: moonbird.

hornedfiend ,

he’s not wrong, is he? Taiwan is Republic of China, so technically China.

hornedfiend ,

or you can use cachyos. running V3 packages on vanilla arch makes it more prone to breakage.

hornedfiend , (edited )

Does it beat Bitwarden though? Bitwardan has supported at least 2 services for me using passkeys ,one of which is google.

I might be misunderstanding this, but it doesn’t seem like proton beat anyone to anything.

Edit for info: bitwarden.com/passwordless-passkeys/

Right,yeah,that’s true for mobile indeed.

Sad that these sort of features are paywalled.

Steam Flatpak interface randomly freezes

I am using the Steam Flatpak on OpenSuse Tumbleweed and when using the Steam interface, specifically when I get a chat message or try to respond to one, the Steam UI will hard freeze, as in a I can’t type or move windows or interact with anything and then 30 seconds or so later everything goes back to normal. Plasma is still...

hornedfiend ,

Yep. I had the exact same issue with steam flatpak on arch.

I installed “native’” steam via package manager and it doesn’t have this issue.

hornedfiend ,

He should stick to Linux distros and his emacs stuff. This kind of content isn’t appropriate for him or representative of his channel really.

I think he learned from this, cause this is a rather old video and I no longer see any other sort of content like it on his channel.

hornedfiend ,

Can you own more than 6 lousy ships now? Not that I am still playing the game, but IT was the only fun thing left to do for me last time I tried getting back into this game.

hornedfiend ,

You have no idea how much I regret buying a Canon Pixmass printer on offer for 50€. I should have just sucked it up and coughed up 100 more to get a damn Brother laser printer.

Well,at least now I get to replace ink cartridges every week or so and I get to print my ass on photographic paper.

Live and learn I guess.

hornedfiend ,

I hope this also means not showing the thousand “setup” screen needed to install the os,post install.

That is single-handedly the worst thing ever and only Apple manages to compete with such tactics.

hornedfiend ,

For some people Windows is the PC,like Chrome is the internet and they only “google” things. What a world…

According to Google Plasma 6 for Arch was cancelled :D (beehaw.org)

I don’t use Google directly, but as part of the open source meta search engine SearXNG, where we can specify what search engines it will use. And the top result is from Google and I can confirm that Plasma 6 for Arch is now officially been canceled. And it’s linked to Reddit....

hornedfiend ,

Joined the closed beta yesterday and the game seems very nice, however I’m not sure how the step counter works. In Statistics,at least , they are way off,by thousands of steps.

Edit: typo

hornedfiend ,

My first linux was in '98 and it was redhat 5 .2. I remember buying it from a computer shop I used to frequent as a teenager back then. i think it came on 3 cds or something like that.

The amount of time I spent compiling kernels, building x server and getting confs to work is priceless.

Ah,the good hard as fuck old days of Linux.

hornedfiend ,

Or… And hear me out, Molly FOSS with Unified Push notifications. Problem solved!

hornedfiend ,

After being on Graphene for the past 2 years,I decided to reinstall with no google at all, since my bank app now works without any google services dependencies.

hooray for me,I’m finally free and can profit from multiuser installed sandboxed services in another user profile if needed.

Glad to be out of this downward spiral.

hornedfiend ,

sorry,I realized now I didn’t mention what I reinstalled and it’s still Graphene, but with no Google services framework installed. Pure stock Graphene with only their apps.

hornedfiend ,

I can. They have their own payment app.

hornedfiend ,

It does. It’s not without flaws, but 80% of the time it works fine (it has a bug where it loses configured card when switching between multi users - so that’s painful, but it’s a tinfoil level choice on my part).

Most banks provide their own payment apps to use with NFC payments, but I agree Google Pay is by far better and works perfectly out of the box. But it’s google. Next ad would be related to some of your purchase history,so your data is shamelessly farmed.

hornedfiend ,

That’s some profitable irony right there. I don’t disagree with people using stuff the way the want to,but I do prefer choice. Luckily for me I live in EU ,so privacy and choice is more or less still a thing, allegedly.

If that works for you, great. It’s a good tip for others as well. I do spend around 70€/2 years of PIA,but I think that’s reasonable.

hornedfiend ,

Of course they are. they share dependencies with other software. flatpaks bundle all dependencies, which is great for sandboxing, even though some sort of break the rule and share some, they are still sandboxed.

Unless you “firejail” or “bubblewrap” your software, security is much better OOB for flatpaks.

hornedfiend ,

why the fuck would I need an AI in a browser? 0 fucks given for this “feature”. firefox is devolving into an edge.

hornedfiend ,

Nothing to see here. just shows how different gaming companies are, with Ubisoft being a greedy sack of shit, barely being able to innovate anymore.

hornedfiend ,

No hate from me,but rather a simple question? Why use preconfigured distros instead of the original, always best, with archinstall script? You can even install pamac or whatever package installer tool manjaro uses.

hornedfiend ,

Can’t wait. Fortress now has been a blast so far. Such a good game.

hornedfiend ,

Last of us 1 initial scene with Joel’s daughter.

hornedfiend ,

Have a look at Dwarf Fortress too. It could melt your brain.
