And I’m sure this was the actual reason for the delay, not the host’s equipment failure that Trump was rambling on about.

FundMECFSResearch , in National Women's Defense League to Harris: Dump Shapiro Over Sex Case Failings

Man I hope she doesn’t choose Shapiro. Don’t need more extremist Zionism. I’ll vote for her either way, but if she chooses Shapiro, I’ll have to hold my nose when doing so.

Cosmos7349 , (edited )

I don’t think he’s taken a significantly different position than the other candidates on this. I mean in January, he said “I personally believe Benjamin Netanyahu is one of the worst leaders of all time”. He was pretty reactionary about school protests, but for the most part he basically has had the i-dont-want-this-to-affect-my-politics-two-state-i-condemn-violence position that most politicians take, and hasn’t been especially deferent to Israel at all.

He’s not my favorite, just because he seems kinda… mmmm… politician-y asshole-y to me? But I don’t feel like his stance on Israel is the reason to specifically avoid him.

FundMECFSResearch ,

He’s certainly AIPAC worded. Here is a snippet frok his wp page

In regards to students being “blocked from going to campus just because they’re Jewish”, Shapiro compared such an act to the Ku Klux Klan.https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/mobile-html/Josh_Shapiro#cite_note-144https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/mobile-html/Josh_Shapiro#cite_note-145 He called for a police crackdown on the pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of Pennsylvania,https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/mobile-html/Josh_Shapiro#cite_note-146 but later said he was already aware of police plans to disband the encampment after police made arrests less than 24 hours after Shapiro’s statement.https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/mobile-html/Josh_Shapiro#cite_note-147

As of June 2024, Shapiro supported a proposed state law that would block state funding of colleges and universities that engage in a “boycott or divestment from Israel,” a term that the bill defined to include any activity “intended to financially penalize the government of Israel”.https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/mobile-html/Josh_Shapiro#cite_note-148https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/mobile-html/Josh_Shapiro#cite_note-149

First Amendment advocates have criticized Shapiro over a revision to the state employees’ code of conduct prohibiting “scandalous” behavior. Pro-Palestinian and Muslim groups raised concerns that the order was intended to chill speech related to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. One First Amendment lawyer from Bryn Mawr called the regulation “impossible to adhere to because it’s impossible to understand what it applies to.”

worldwidewave , in Republicans want someone younger than Donald Trump as president: new poll

Short of a major heart attack, Trump isn’t giving up one iota of power. Really helps to draw a contrast between the parties, where one guy is willing to step down and the other is prepared to crash the plane with us all in it.

teft ,
@teft@lemmy.world avatar

They wouldn’t throw him in prison even if he could get there. They would put him on one of their propaganda “news” channels and let him go to town. They can subtitle whatever they want for the locals so he can say whatever.

But he’ll never get there. He has a permanent secret service escort that probably isn’t going to be cool with defecting to russia.

aeronmelon ,

I highly doubt the Feds would allow that.

Sabata11792 ,

ipkpjersi ,

I’m not so sure I agree that he will be held accountable for his actions if he doesn’t win. I think he still narrowly avoids prison even if he doesn’t win, or maybe only spends like 3 days maximum in prison, sadly.

FlyingSquid OP ,

There’s also the possibility of house arrest. I’ll take that.

tacosanonymous ,

It doesn’t seem like a real consequence. Also, what if he breaks it? Will there be a consequence for that? I don’t see it happening.

Was Biden not stubbornly refusing to step down for so long, until his party forced his hand? I think Democrats wanted someone younger than him in 2020 too. I think we’re giving Biden too much credit here.

Samvega ,

We must remember that Biden is a politician who arguably plagiarised lines of a speech from Kinnock, sinking his '87 campaign.

He’s not some paragon of virtue and perfection.

His greatest achievement is also working with the Republicans. And look at how much respect that got him from that party.

frezik ,

You can bet that at least the last week of that was a matter of keeping up appearances. The transition went smoother than it had any right to, and that doesn’t happen without a lot of behind the scenes planning.

brbposting ,

Must’ve been a supervetted group who knew anything if reports are true some close aides were told minutes before the official announcement.

some_guy ,

False. Biden wasn’t willing to step down. He was forced to. Just because he did it doesn’t make him a hero. He deserves to be remembered for refusing to listen to feedback until it was clear he’d be tanked by people like Pelosi, another Dem who won’t give up power unless it’s on her own terms. But we can move on from that mess, thankfully.

teamevil ,

Or he made sure to stand strong strategically (as anyone running would do) and stepped down at a time to maximize effectiveness.

FakeGreekGirl ,

He was forced to, how? Nobody has the power to force him do anything.

He read the writing on the wall and stepped aside. Something Trump would never do.

Evilcoleslaw , (edited )

He was pressured to step down and then was ultimately willing to listen and do do. There was no method to force him to step down – he had more than enough delegates locked in to win the nomination if he wanted to keep going.

FundMECFSResearch , in Senate unanimously approves bill adding dozens of new federal judgeships

Wait so now biden can appoint a bunch of judges?

Why would the GOP vote for this?

Am I missing something?

gAlienLifeform OP ,
@gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

The judges are going to be phased in gradually over the next 12 years. Republicans figure they’ll be able to shut down the Democratic party and democracy generally before then, whereas Democratic lawmakers are, with all due respect, fucking idiots who think Lucy will let them kick the football this time.

FundMECFSResearch ,

Makes sense

dhork , in Senate unanimously approves bill adding dozens of new federal judgeships

The measure would direct the president to appoint new judges in six increments over the span of 12 years.

You see, this got the unanimous consent because the effects were spread out. This wasn’t a Democratic plan to slam dozens of new Liberal judges onto the courts at once, it will happen gradually over the next 3 Presidential terms. Whichever party loses this election will get 2 more shots to stack the Federal judiciary.

Any plans to reform the Supreme Court should be done similarly.

Yeah, even the corporations realized how bad the Tories were. I must admit, I was a little surprised how strongly and quickly the markets fell after Truss tried to pass her little tax cut package.

She even lost her MP job in the recent elections:

This is it

I bet half the respondents didn't realize Trump is over 75yrs

scytale ,

I imagine it’s like those people Jordan Klepper interviews at Trump rallies that go like this:

Jordan: Do you think a candidate who’s almost 80 is too old?

Person: Yeah.

J: …and Trump is 78.

Person: Yeah.

J: So he’s too old and someone younger would be better.

Person: For sure.

J: So who do you want for president?

Person: I’m voting Trump.

Samvega ,

Jordan: Do you think that a sentient pile of goo trained in a laboratory to hate all human life and subject it to fiery nuclear death is a good candidate?

Person: No.

J: Trump is actually a robot inhabited by that goo. Here is clear, simple, factual and verifiable evidence. Here are multiple videos and sources confirming that Trump wants to kill us all.

Person: Yeah.

J: So, Trump is a bad candidate who will murder your children.

Person: Yep.

J: Who are you voting for?

Person: Trump, he’ll go after the alphabet mafia first. And, to be honest, he’s just saying he’ll kill everyone to be edgy and noticeable.
