slickgoat , in Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, accused as the main plotter of 9/11 attacks, agrees to plead guilty

I’ve read quite a bit about the Gitmo experience. 20 years of mind games would turn many innocent people into just giving up. Some of these folk were snatched off the street by Pakistan security services on dodgy Intel. They then spend decades in cages being disbelieved. The only evidence against them is their own confession. The military’s job was to secure that ‘evidence’.

Monument , in U.S. Park Police Officers who killed Bijan Ghaisar in 2017 have been on paid administrative leave for six years. They're now suing the Interior Department.

Two quotes from the article:

Lucas Vinyard and Alejandro Amaya, who have been on paid leave for more than six years, seek decision on whether they will be fired.

“While the [Interior] Department refuses to act,” attorneys Daniel S. Crowley and Katelyn A. Clarke wrote for the officers, “the officers continue to remain on administrative leave with significant career and financial consequences, including damage to their reputation, loss of overtime pay, and the ongoing stress” caused by the unresolved employment action.

I suppose while I would enjoy a 6 year paid vacation from work, I would probably not enjoy not receiving any promotions during that time. They are federal, so they probably do get COLA increases.
Assuming conflict of interest rules/terms of the suspension allow it, I’m surprised they didn’t seek secondary employment, or even attempt to relaunch their careers at another employer or in another field and simply quit before they get fired. (They’ll probably be listed as a do not rehire, but they won’t have to tell future employers they got fired.)

Thank you! At least I know my current vehicle is not in the group, but the 2005 Camry I had for 18 years might have been.

Good thing I never needed it to find out!

TheWeirdestCunt ,

Oh fun, I just got my airbag module replaced in my 2012 Kia and now I might need to get the airbag itself replaced

Alexstarfire ,

Next you’ll need to get the air replaced.

homesweethomeMrL , in Families face food insecurity in Republican-led states that turned down federal aid this summer

It’s true, and we’ll throw it on the pile but know this: republiQan voters - including the ones affected by this - do not care. They are in a cult.

It’s a cult with guns and Jesus and the flag and there’s a lot of praying and pledging and all the attendant symbolism of duty and honor without either of those things. These motherfuckers are in there deep and they only way out is for them to acknowledge that.

So when we see the corporate news doing absolutely sweet fuck all to help them do that - well, you know what we’re gonna get.

SoJB , in An exonerated man was ‘50 feet from freedom.’ Then a court stopped him.

In North Korea, the state can simply send you to labor camps for no reason, where you risk your life fighting fires of making license plates for literal pennies per hour. You must do this because the state does not provide any living essentials such as hygiene items, medical care, or real food.

And then when your labor camp sentence is done, they just jail you again for no reason as soon as you walk out the door. This is considered normal and the people accept it.

WhollyGuacamole , in Families face food insecurity in Republican-led states that turned down federal aid this summer

These states that declined the aid most likely want low-income people to have no choice but to rely on local churches for any help.

They want them to be so desperate to keep their 3 shitty minimum-wage jobs that they won’t complain about mistreatment. It’s slavery with extra steps.
