ralphio , in [Mega thread] - Biden ends bid for presidency

Honestly the biggest problem Biden had was that all his funding dried up after the debate.

www.nytimes.com/2024/07/…/biden-fundraising.html

Regardless of who you think would win in a vacuum you gotta acknowledge this.

I suspended my donations with a memo that they need to seriously consider running someone else. I’ll vote for Harris, but I’m not excited for her.

thisbenzingring ,

I think she’s as fine a candidate as we’re likely to get. The biggest bonus is breaking the glass ceiling, once and for ever. Not just a woman but a woman of a colorful heredity. It will be the best thing to happen in this era of bullshit politics.

coffee_with_cream ,

No talk of issues or positions here. Just “her sex and skin color.” Maybe that will get some people out to vote, but they did the same thing for Hillary and it did not work. “First woman president, she deserves it”

VanillaBean ,

The biggest problem he had was getting old.

FlexibleToast ,

This means Harris shouldn’t have an advantage. She only had the advantage that she could use the funds that Biden raised.

ralphio ,

Presumably the donations will start coming back in now that Biden is out.

FlexibleToast ,

But now they can go to whomever the new candidate is.

ralphio ,

Ah OK I see what you’re saying. I misunderstood.

Johnson is an idiot. This is embarrassing for him and the GOP. Keep up the good work loser. All Biden would have to do is get a doctor to say he’s not medically fit anyway. Which we all know wouldn’t be hard.

The campaign to pressure Harris to step aside starts now.

I’m joking, I think. I can’t tell any more.

tamal3 ,

Can we move the convention forward? I understand that US elections are very high dollar, but would be nice to see the options and have everyone agree that Harris is the most inspiring to all.

Whitmer already said she’s not running. Too bad.

kboy101222 ,

As someone who has worked in the event setup space, if they move up the convention, those workers have my utmost sympathies…

I am confident that that won’t happen. But I could at least imagine Vance being pulled off the Republican ticket in favor of someone else to counter whatever ticket the Democrats run.

SuddenDownpour , in Joe Biden ends re-election campaign

For all of y’all anxiety-pilled people: this is great news. Biden was stuck in negative momentum because his health issues had been exposed and were not going to stop resulting in terrible headlines, which is a problem whoever comes next is not going to have, unless the delegates are somehow stupid enough to pull another dinosaur from below the rug.

More interestingly: now that Biden has pulled out because he’s patently too old, as it was a concern for plenty of voters, this is a golden opportunity to put the focus on the other candidate whose age is a somewhat less obvious but still noticeable issue.

timbuck2themoon ,

If 34 felonies, rape, insurrection, etc. Didn’t sway people Im not sure age is the thing that’ll turn them around.

JimSamtanko ,

Yup. It had nothing to do with his age.

Nastybutler ,

Yeah, but just think of all the clips we can show of Faux News talking heads saying someone in their 80s is too old for President, and do the ol’ switcharoo

EnderWiggin ,

Exactly! We now have a much younger, well-spoken, and intelligent candidate who can square off against someone who probably can’t remember the last time they wiped their own ass. Let’s go, Kamala!

What’s the best option going forward, and how do the common rabble like myself best support the newest not-Trump?

iz_ok ,

Once they get the candidate situation situated, donate and canvass for them. Convince your friends to vote. If you feel voting doesn’t matter, remember there’s more on the ballot than the presidential race. A lot of the time meaningful change starts at the local level. You’ll see your political power in action if you get involved in your community.

Rentlar ,

#1 priority is to get out the vote between you, your friends, family and coworkers, and take the trust that Biden has just put in you and everyone else to uphold your democratic values as a nation.

If you want a challenge, your goal is to track every bullshit reason Republicans (some in Democratic sheep’s clothing) fabricate that the new nominee is unelectable, and communicate to your network why those reasons are bullshit, no matter how many times the media repeats it to pass it off as true.

xhieron , in [Mega thread] - Biden ends bid for presidency
@xhieron@lemmy.world avatar

Well congratulations “liberals”, bots, propagandists, defeatists. You win. If Trump had beaten Biden, it would have been Biden’s fault, along with the party. Now the party gets to share the blame with you. You lot gambled this for the rest of us. Let’s hope your bet pays off. Open your wallets and hit the pavement. If you’re a real person and you pitched a fit so this would happen, you got what you wanted. Act like it. Your lobbying won you an obligation to campaign. If you were on social media begging for Biden to quit, now you owe the time you spent here to Harris’s campaign (or whomever the fuck they nominate).

You bought it. You own it.

audiomodder ,

You must be too young to remember Clinton losing to Trump and rather than “oh this is Clinton and the party’s fault”, they blamed it all on “Bernie bros” despite there being absolutely no data to back it up.

If I’ve learned anything in my decades on this earth, it’s that the DNC will fuck everything up, and they will blame anything bad that happens on the progressive wing of the party.

Stop calling it “execution”. Call it what it is: Murder

Whether you agree with capital punishment or not, “execution” is the more accurate definition. “Putting to death especially as a legal penalty”.

Execution is a penalty for murder.

Emperor , in Johnson: Replacing Biden on ticket would be 'wrong,' 'unlawful'
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

Election law expert Richard Hasen wrote that there is “no credence” to the notion that the Democratic Party could not legally replace Biden on the ticket, as he is not the nominee yet – the nominating process generally takes place during the Democratic National Convention.

“Joe Biden is not the party’s nominee now, and states generally point to the major party’s nominee as the one whose name is on the ballot,” he wrote in a piece earlier this month.

I think I’ll believe the expert.

SnotFlickerman OP ,
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I think I’ll believe the conservative stacked court system that will ignore all that and rule against the Democrats anyway…

BlameThePeacock ,

It’s not a federal legal matter, party internal politics are not regulated the same way as actual elections. There’s some tangential finance laws, but the democratic party can pick whoever the hell they want however the hell they want.

cheese_greater ,

It seems like everything is litigable so we shall see, I put no new low below these animals currently controlling the judiciary

tal ,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

You can file a lawsuit over anything.

A judge might throw your case out rather than let it go to court if it doesn’t even warrant a case, but something being “litigable” isn’t much of a bar.

If someone repeatedly files frivolous lawsuits purely for the purpose of harassing someone, they might be guilty of barratry, depending upon locale.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barratry_(common_law)

Barratry (/ˈbærətri/ BARR-ə-tree, from Old French barat (“deceit, trickery”)) is a legal term that, at common law, described a criminal offense committed by people who are overly officious in instigating or encouraging prosecution of groundless litigation, or who bring repeated or persistent acts of litigation for the purposes of profit or harassment.

Although it remains a crime in some jurisdictions, barratry has frequently been abolished as being anachronistic and obsolete.

If barratrous litigation is deemed to be for the purpose of silencing critics, it is known as a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP). Jurisdictions that otherwise have no barratry laws may have SLAPP laws.

United States

Several jurisdictions in the United States have declared barratry (in the sense of a frivolous or harassing litigant) to be a crime as part of their tort reform efforts. For example, in the U.S. states of California, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, barratry is a misdemeanor. In Texas, barratry is a misdemeanor on the first conviction, but a felony on subsequent convictions.

  • California Penal Code Section 158: “Common barratry is the practice of exciting groundless judicial proceedings, and is punishable by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding six months and by fine not exceeding one thousand dollars ($1,000).”
  • California Penal Code Section 159: “No person can be convicted of common barratry except upon proof that he has excited suits or proceedings at law in at least three instances, and with a corrupt or malicious intent to vex and annoy.”
  • Revised Code of Washington 9.12.010: “Every person who brings on his or her own behalf, or instigates, incites, or encourages another to bring, any false suit at law or in equity in any court of this state, with intent thereby to distress or harass a defendant in the suit, or who serves or sends any paper or document purporting to be or resembling a judicial process, that is not in fact a judicial process, is guilty of a misdemeanor; and in case the person offending is an attorney, he or she may, in addition thereto be disbarred from practicing law within this state.”
  • Virginia laws on barratry, champerty, and maintenance were overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States in NAACP v. Button 371 U.S. 415 (1963).
  • Vermont Statutes Title 13, § 701: “A person who is a common barrator shall be fined not more than $50.00 and become bound with sufficient surety for his or her good behavior for not less than one year.”

Hah! Do you really think Republicans let experts tell them what to think? Their ignorance is better than anyone’s knowledge!

Party before country. Interesting wording.

It’s very clear that this is how they’ve run things for quite a while now. It’s why Clinton and Biden were the nominees in the first place and why Trump won in 2016 and nearly again in 2020.
