Varyk , in U.S. surgeon general declares gun violence a public health crisis

Okay, so almost two mass shootings per day is the line at which a US official is willing to speak out against gun violence.

Good to know.

I would have said one mass shooting a week is really pushing it, but that’s why they’re the surgeon general.

Line in the sand: roughly two mass shootings everyday.

@uberdroog@lemmy.world avatar

I read a headline yesterday that a toddler has been injured by firearms every day for the last two years in the US. But abortion is the problem. As an 80s kid, no disrespect, but guns are gay.

Viking_Hippie ,

toddler has injured themselves with a firearm every day for the last two years

Should really take the gun away from that dude and teach him the difference between plural and singular 🤔

80s kid or not, sometimes we need to update the terms we use.

Intentional because 2nd amendment types don’t like their masculinity questioned. There should be shirts.

Crackhappy ,

I thought the headline was that there was a toddler shooting someone every two weeks. Although from what I read, that headline was a bit incorrect.

Either way that goes the point is the same. You are probably correct but I’m too lazy to check ;)

Technically correct is the best correct.

The toddler on toddler violence in the US is out of control!

vaultdweller013 ,

Guns may be gay but I dont give a damn, give me the powder tube it goes well with my axe.

corsicanguppy ,

Only two? We passed 2 a few years back. I’ve seen 8 but if the average isn’t 4 I’ll be surprised.

Varyk , (edited )

Yup, the average for US mass shootings, as in multiple victims of gun violence from a single shooting, in 2024 up to June is 1.5 per day, or about one mass shooting in the US every 16 hours.

You might be thinking of regular shootings, where only one person is injured, which is way more common and includes suicides and accidents.

corsicanguppy , in Trump expressed concern that returning classified docs after subpoena could result in criminal charges, according to sealed notes - ABC News

Did they actually use the phrase “hide the evidence or we could get caught”, or was that just how I picture the conversation?

Why can’t news say “wanted to hide evidence to avoid punishment”?

I wouldn’t put it past Trump to start describing Biden as a “Master Debater”. It has the level of intellectual discourse we expect from Donald Trump.

Except the population (at least in my country) is quickly growing anyway because so many refugees come. And there will be far more if climate change continues at this speed.

Edit: this comment isn’t directed against immigration (judging by the downvotes you probably interpreted it that way), I’m just stating the way it is rn

3 people in a 737 don’t make 100people non matter what side they seat at or how many times they change seats…but if they seat at the right place near an emergency exit with no seatbelt on, they could make it 2 people or even 1 person in the plane!

    jordanlund , in It's wild how many job listings might be fake
    @jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

    There’s another angle on this too related to H1B Visa hires.

    news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38875758

    geekworking ,

    H1B requires that companies show that no qualified Americans could be found, so those listings are written so nobody could or would want to apply. Stuff like 10 years experience in software released 5 years ago, entry level job/pay requiring a masters degree, etc.

    What this sounds like is legit listings, but done to give the outward appearance that company is strong/growing and to scare current workers into thinking that they will get replaced if they are not killing themselves slaving away.

    grysbok ,
    @grysbok@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

    Could also be job postings to convince current workers that their overwork will soon end because the company is about to hire new folks. I’ve seen that theory floated to explain the “help wanted” signs at fast food places that never come down.

    Viking_Hippie , in Trump expressed concern that returning classified docs after subpoena could result in criminal charges, according to sealed notes - ABC News

    girlfreddy , in Trump gag order partially lifted in hush money case
    @girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

    Someone help make sense of this. Why would you lift the gag order off jurors but not yourself?

    Merchan was never personally covered under the gag order. His family was, but not him.

    Bluefalcon OP ,

    Federal judges are covered against violence. They are saying it’s safe for the jury but not other peoples families. Thank for your civil duty, now good luck.

    girlfreddy ,
    @girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

    I’m not sure I understand whose families you’re talking about here.

    Bluefalcon OP ,

    Court staff, the district attorney’s staff and their families.

    girlfreddy ,
    @girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

    All those people are covered under the gag order.

    pleasejustdie , in Trump gag order partially lifted in hush money case

    Because harassing the Jurors won’t change the outcome of the case since the Jurors have already done everything they are going to do, so harassing them can no longer harm the case, which is probably his primary concern. He obviously would prefer that Trump not attack them, but he’s giving Trump rope and a warning, so we’ll see if Trump ignores the rope, or if he can’t help himself but to open his mouth and stick his head in it.

    Bluefalcon OP ,

    They literally built a gallow to hang the Vice President. They thought it would stop the results of an election.

    SeaJ ,

    I feel like Trump is constantly given rope and he always sticks his head in. The rope seems to be infinitely slack for him though.

    RestrictedAccount , in It's wild how many job listings might be fake

    This is near the top of the list of the stupidest ideas I’ve ever heard.

    If a talented person applies to your fake job and you ghost them or string them along, they are not going to apply again when you might have needed them.

    After all you already told them that you think they suck.

    agressivelyPassive ,

    That’s not how this works, though.

    These “jobs” are just a way to acquire talent. A larger company can almost always need a few more “good workers”. So if a really good candidate comes along, they’ll snatch that person, if the candidate is just okayish, they tell them someone else got the job.

    RestrictedAccount ,

    That makes sense, but that is not what the article is about.

    agressivelyPassive ,

    Of course it is. It’s a job that doesn’t really exists, but gets advertised.

    RestrictedAccount ,

    This seems more like you disagree with the author’s research of his article.

    agressivelyPassive ,

    I disagree with the implication and outrage about it.

    It seems like ragebait, just like “gen Z doesn’t want to work” crap.

    RestrictedAccount ,

    So we agree that it is one of the stupidest ideas ever
