Misty99 , in State investigators will probe police raid of Kansas newspaper office
@Misty99@lemmy.ninja avatar

This does not look good for the paper, according to the reporting of the Kansas Reflector.

PatFussy , in Maui residents targeted in scams to grab land after tragedy, officials say

Who can i ask about the land grabbing? I want some of this action

quindraco , in Man who set fire to Planned Parenthood sentenced to 10 years in prison

Imagine committing arson over an abortion that never happened.

TH1NKTHRICE , in School district uses ChatGPT to help ban library books

It’s backwards policy they need to follow. But, if you’re going to follow a backwards policy, might as well do it as efficiently as possible.

Are there any ongoing legal challenges against these book bans that anyone knows of?

flipthetube , in Revealed: Hawaii official refused to release water for Maui fires until it was too late

Not sure how well this would work for Hawaiian cities, but San Francisco utilizes a network of cisterns in intersections that are ready to go if needed.

San Francisco has a big historical reason for doing that though.

CeruleanRuin ,

In this new era, almost EVERY city has a reason to put those or similar measures in. Fires are only getting more widespread and intense as areas dry out more and more and experience record heat. It’s only a matter of time until another one threatens a major urban area.

I don’t disagree, but they have the benefit of hindsight. And politicians are not very good at seeing reality until after the fact.

thefluffiest , in Maui residents targeted in scams to grab land after tragedy, officials say

Landgrabbing after a disaster is a proud American tradition. So nothing much to see here

ramenshaman , in Revealed: Hawaii official refused to release water for Maui fires until it was too late

I feel like you could use salt water to fight fires and keep the fresh water for drinking.

Crackhappy ,
@Crackhappy@lemmy.world avatar

That would be actually worse than letting the fire burn. You would absolutely ruin the land for plants for quite a while.

Natural fire break.

p1mrx , in Girl, 13, gives birth after she was raped and denied abortion in Mississippi

I see clinics in Carbondale, about 5 hours South of Chicago. I wonder why that wasn’t an option?

RaoulDook ,

Probably no driver’s license or car, no money, no help, etc.

Elivey ,

“was looking to get an abortion for her daughter but was told the closest abortion provider was in Chicago – a drive of more than nine hours from their home in Clarksdale, Mississippi.”

They could have been lied to, these people are disgusting. When taken to be seen for her strange behavior before they knew she was pregnant, in response to getting back the positive pregnancy test the nurse asked the girl “What have you been doing?”. There are plenty of people in healthcare that don’t care about these victims either or see them as victims at all.

Those clinics you see might not give abortions anymore too.

p1mrx , (edited )

Given the geography of the situation, it would be useful to ensure that (1) the southern IL clinics remain open and (2) this information is widely known in the the southern states.

The Guardian seems to be spreading misinformation by claiming that Chicago is the closest location without further research.

Edit: here’s a map to clarify:

https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/30b4e43e-401a-4140-8995-e335d28ac6a0.webp

Elivey ,
  1. You say it’s widely known with no evidence. Widely known to some does not mean it is known to everyone.
  2. The guardian is reporting what they the family were told by the nurse. If you read the original Time article they say that precisely, the nurse told them that’s where the nearest place was. Whether the nurse was correct or not is not what they claimed.
p1mrx ,

You say it’s widely known with no evidence

I said it would be useful to make the information widely known. Journalists should call up the clinics in southern Illinois, ask if they’re open, and share this information in future articles. I assume they’ll get plenty of opportunities.

Tedesche ,

I’m all for police reform, but you “fuck the police”/ACAB types are just anarchist idiots with serious inferiority complexes. Nothing in this article said anything about the police in question being corrupt of abusive of their power. They were just underpaid.

derGottesknecht ,

Nothing in this article said anything about the police in question being corrupt of abusive of their power.

It said US Police…

Astroturfed ,

Police, in America. You clearly haven’t had any real interactions with them.

LifeInMultipleChoice , (edited )

From the U.S.

A lot of interactions with police, very positive overall. Biggest issue I ever have had was having to wait over a holiday weekend to get a 1st hearing before being released.

Using the ACAB terminology is a gaurenteed way to ensure racism and bad treatment are fixed at a way slower pace.

Edit: my thought process… Anyone who wants to help change or becomes a cop trying to better the system you are already classifying as a bad person. So now they are trying an up hill battle against people that don’t like them bringing reform, fighting for people that don’t like them and call them names when they’re never met them. Eventually you imagine they give up on the reform because it’s easier and the same pay, and at least the people around them start to like them.

Rom ,

Using the ACAB terminology is a gaurenteed way to ensure racism and bad treatment are fixed at a way slower pace.

So you acknowledge police are racist and abusers and aren’t doing anything to fix it internally?

_wintermute ,

They still think the concept of a “good cop” exists lmfao. What it must be like to have such an elementary level take.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

I never said such. I just believe the solution to the issues at hand aren’t as elementary as you make it out to be. What we do know though, is making an enemy out of a group doesn’t make them more willing to reform towards our viewpoints. It creates more Trumps, Desantis, Abbotts followers that lock down from working against the issues at hand and double down on not listening to solutions.

_wintermute ,

I said nothing about solutions to any issue at hand. The cops made an enemy out of the people first, probably right around the time the white supremacists were becoming the majority. The cops will never “reform to our viewpoints” because they exist to protect private property and the interests of the wealthy.

The fact that either you’re 18 and have almost zero political perspective or you just literally have zero political perspective is showing.

_wintermute ,

It creates more Trumps, Desantis, Abbotts followers that lock down from working against the issues at hand and double down on not listening to solutions.

Sounds like “reach across the aisle to fascists.” Do you really think those people will ever “listen to solutions?” like one day DeSantis et al are just going to come around and apologize for being blatant bigoted fascists? Lmao

We don’t need the ~30% of the country that sucks. Stop acting like we need them for anything. They are gone, living in their own reality.

I love how your argument is don’t disagree with fascists because you’ll get more fascism. Clown show.

yiliu ,

“There isn’t even a single good cop in the world” is one of the most edgelord 13-year-old takes I’ve ever seen, and you’re acting like his take is oversimplified?

_wintermute ,

Right. The way the justice system works in America, specifically as it pertains to law enforcement, is an example of an institution that is against the people in general. It was not designed to help the people but to keep the powerful in power and wealthy. It isn’t about justice, but taking rights away from minorities. Any “good” cop ends up realizing that the whole institution is corrupt as fuck (as it exists in America) and quits or gets forced out for not being a corrupt piece of shit in one way or another.

Your ignorance of this is telling of how little life experience you have. Or you’ve just been white and suburban your entire life.

Edit: let me guess, you’re friends with plenty of cops and all the cops in your (white) town are sweet as pie!

yiliu ,

Damn, if that’s their ‘real’ job, they’re doing a terrible job of it! You’re wrong, actually, I live in a major city I know a lot of Chinese and Indian people, including my wife, and an easy majority my coworkers at work are the same, including the CEO–hell, the CEOs of most major tech companies at this point…and the police haven’t done shit to stop them! Hell, there’s a bunch of black families that have moved right into my neighborhood–which is a pretty nice neighborhood, I might add–and they’re walking around here like they have the same rights as everybody else!

Somebody really ought to remind these cops what their real job is, cuz they’re failing at it pretty horribly.

_wintermute ,

White clown lmao. “Cops are fine because I don’t see the bad shit they do because I’m white (but I know Indians and my wife is Chinese or some shit and one time I voted for a black person to be president)”

Edit: also somehow “Cops aren’t racist because non white people are CEOs”

??? The fuck are you on lmao or was that more of a “racism doesn’t exist anymore” sort of sentiment.

yiliu ,

I think you’re doing a much better job of arguing against yourself than I could.

_wintermute ,

Your argument is logically the same as saying All Lives Matter or Not All Men. Misses the point entirely.

Like so many white folks in “nice neighborhoods” you base your reality and world view around the comfortable bubble in which you live.

“The institution of policing is fine because it works out for me” is what you are telling me. Privileged as fuck and you don’t even know it. Classic.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

I believe that racism is rampant throughout all of humanity and causes abuses in our police force quite often, yes. But just like using all other generalizations, I don’t believe you are automatically a white, male, virgin, glasses wearing, over weight, etc just because you are on lemmy having a conversation.

If we tell ourselves all cops are such, it leaves no room to fix any of the issues. It builds hate, mistrust, and increases problems. Getting rid of the police completely isn’t the solution even if we want a large reformat. No police would enter mafia/gang run very quickly, there is just to much money and not enough risk to not do so.

_wintermute , (edited )

No police would enter mafia/gang run very quickly, there is just to much money and not enough risk to not do so.

From one gang to another. Seems good. I’ll take the gang without federal/state government backed military equipment, drones, legal and nearly impervious unionization and command of the legal system, etc etc.

Edit: almost forgot about the blank check they have to get around encrypted communications and devices etc. All legal mind you.

negativeyoda ,

Well.

If it walks like a pig and talks like a pig… these stereotypes must have just bamfed into reality?

Your solution is to checks notes be polite to them? Fuck outta here with that noise. ACAB a a rallying cry has gotten traction and is finally putting pressure on those assholes to be accountable.

We’ve tried time and time again to reform the police, to censure them… it’s never gotten better. It’s horrifically worse in a lot of ways today. The police in my city have been sued by the federal government, and it’s going as well as you’d expect

Growing up as a 17 year old who listened to punk rock who wanted to drink and be a shit 17 year old, I hated the police. As a 47 year old homeowner and parent, my hatred of the policy’s brutality and lack of accountability is thousands of times more intense.

Astroturfed ,

You white, we get it.

_wintermute ,

FringeTheory999 ,

Adequately paid when you account for all their OT and other forms of compensation. plus the perks of being unfirable and immune to 99.9999999999% of prosecution. Since police corruption is systemic, and these cops are a part of that system, these cops are by definition corrupt.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, they’re the one non-corrupt, non-abusive police force in America. Plausible.

DuncanTDP , in Girl, 13, gives birth after she was raped and denied abortion in Mississippi
@DuncanTDP@sh.itjust.works avatar

This is just completely disgusting. When everyone failed her the law wasn’t even on her side. Say what you want about abortions in general, but the audacity that people have to make getting abortions under rape or complications political is just disgusting. My heart truly goes out to this little girl, and her family, but especially the little girl. I can’t imagine the amount of life altering trauma she has gone through, and how this is going to affect her for the rest of her life. This shouldn’t happen to anyone. What the fuck is wrong with people.

I swear these people, when it came time to name their state, said “We want to be called Kansas!” But there’s already a state called Kansas.

Okay then, how about “Our Kansas”?

I guess we can work with that.

2: Both are clearly native words.

Changetheview , in A Pennsylvania study suggests links between fracking and asthma, lymphoma in children

So frustrating that this industry isn’t properly regulated. It’s massively profitable and has had a profound impact US energy structure.

Yet basic regulations can’t be implemented because they’re “too challenging” for the industry. Even as continued evidence of its harm pops up.

It’s insane. And shameful. I have some shockingly wealthy acquaintances connected to the industry, and without fail, they’ll all spread the pro-industry propaganda before any votes related to the most basic regulations. It’s pathetic. Absolutely blinded by greed.

    TH1NKTHRICE ,

Look no further. Here lies the underlying cause of your frustration.
