Carrick1973 , in ‘A different level than 2020’: Trump’s plan to steal election is taking shape

This is what happens when you don’t hold criminals accountable for their actions. If we’d actually been tough on these assholes, then we wouldn’t be in this predicament. What are we going to do when all these states say that Trump won? If the past is any indication, the Democrats will cave and let Trump take office, or will bring their case to the SC who have shown that they don’t give a shit about democracy and will install a Republican regardless of the election outcome.

We should have tried those responsible for January 6 and held them accountable, including long prison sentences. I’m looking at you, Trump, Gohmert, MTG, and anyone else who actively tried to overthrow our government or gave in-depth, secret tours to groups that tried to.

FlyingSquid , in UAW files charges against Trump, Musk for trying to intimidate workers
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The article says that, unfortunately, they’re on kind of shaky ground here.

The action came after Musk and Trump held a two-hour conversation on social media platform X on Monday night, during which Trump complimented Musk’s ability to cut costs by saying he would not tolerate workers going on strike.
“You’re the greatest cutter,” Trump said during the conversation. “I mean, I look at what you do. You walk in, you just say: ‘You want to quit?’ They go on strike - I won’t mention the name of the company - but they go on strike. And you say: ‘That’s okay, you’re all gone.’” Musk chuckled but did not respond to Trump’s comments, making it harder for the NLRB to find him liable for making illegal threats to workers at his companies, said Wilma Liebman, chair of the NLRB under former President Barack Obama.
Under federal law, workers cannot be fired for going on strike, and threatening to do so is illegal under the National Labor Relations Act, the UAW said in a statement.

I totally agree that they violated that law in spirit, but I don’t know if the NLRB will go for it.

From the WSJ article covering this suit: “The UAW, which has endorsed Kamala Harris, the presumptive presidential nominee for the Democrats, has been eager to blunt the former president’s appeal to working-class voters by painting him as a friend of the wealthy.”

So, yeah… 🤨

halcyoncmdr ,
@halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world avatar

No shit he’s a friend of the wealthy. He keeps insisting he is wealthy himself, while threatening anyone that wants to actually verify that for decades. And dealing with fraud charges for various financial “irregularities”.

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

That is a FUCK TON of chicken wings.

Alexa tells me the wholesale price of chicken wings is $3.22 a pound and each pound is around 5 wings.

So $1.5m / $3.22 = 465,838.5 pounds of wings.
2,329,193 wings.

What did they charge her with? “Possession with intent to distribute”? LOL.

Why doesn’t he just claim residence where he actually lives?

MegaUltraChicken ,

That won’t get him on the ballots he wants to siphon votes from, which is the entire purpose of his campaign.

Reverendender ,

Would running for president get him on all the ballots?

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Nope, most states require either a certain percentage/number of registered voters for a party or a state-wide petition to get onto the ballot. The only 3rd party on all 50 states’ ballot is the Libertarian party. The Green party is a distant 4th place, as they often need to regather signatures and new petitions every 2-4 years.

If a new party was formed for 2028, it might get enough ground in one state, not any to really sway the balance of the Electoral College.

kinsnik ,

“The Electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves”

US Constitution Amendment 12

The presidential and vice presidential candidates that the electors vote for cannot be from the same state.

kent_eh ,

it is not like you need to reside in NY to be able to appear in the NY presidential ballot

No, but you do need to fill in the application forms accurately and honestly.

Ullallulloo ,
@Ullallulloo@civilloquy.com avatar

Which ballots are those? You think RFK has any chance of flipping California?? (Or New York for that matter?)

MegaUltraChicken ,

He has absolutely no shot of winning any electoral votes or even a state’s popular vote. RFK is not a serious candidate. He’s a crazy person who happens to have a well known name that others are using to try and spoil an election.

Wrench ,

Yes, that’s the point.

If he falsified his permanent residence so that he could side step a (admittedly stupid) rule that state electors votes don’t count if both the president and vice president candidates are from their state, then he falsified his application for nothing, since he has no chance of winning CA in the first place.

A_Random_Idiot ,

We said the same thing about Trump 8 years ago…

idiomaddict ,

His VP is also from California, so California electors can’t choose them.

cheese_greater ,

A President and Vice-President can’t both be from California?

olympicyes ,

It’s from the 12th amendment. A state elector must vote for at least one candidate from a state other than their own. So electors from Nevada could place both their Presidential and Vice Presidential electoral votes with an all-California ticket but California electors may not. There was talk of Kamala picking Newsom for VP but she’d have to change her residency for that to happen. Everyone would know that would be BS and possibly cost her California’s electoral votes or her candidacy in the second state, so she picked Walz instead (not the only reason but you get the idea). Kennedy got caught pulling a fast one so here we are.

tilefan ,

that’s fucking wild. I’d never heard of that aspect of the college

sockpuppet5 ,

He can’t put anywhere else, because his legal residence is in New York.

chiliedogg ,

But he lives in California.

If you don’t actually reside at your legal residence, it’s invalid. It’s like moving to a new house and not updating your driver’s license. You don’t get to claim that you live at your old house - your license just becomes invalid until you fix it.

Why is a news station in Texas concerned with an Illinois school district?

HonkTonkWoman ,

The news networks might have the same ownership & are sharing content to keep readers/viewers happy, without having to pay for local reporting.

One of our local news outlets does this because new ownership cut their budget. They use nationwide stories from other partner networks to cover the broadcast time or publication quota.

It kinda sucks living in an area where you can’t get local news.

bamboo ,

In this case, WGN-TV is owned by Nexstar and KCBD is owned by Gray. Probably the case that KCBD has little budget for reporters, so they repackage other stations news (and add their copyright at the bottom) to drive traffic to their site.

HonkTonkWoman , (edited )

Thanks for this. Am I correct in assuming that the deal would likely be made between Gray & Nexstar, rather than directly between WGB & KCBD?

I know when Sinclair wound up owning a second affiliate in my area, the non local stories were the same between the two affiliates. They each had their own staff & local coverage, but the filler was largely the same across both stations.

bamboo ,

It seems like the same author has the same story posted on other Gray stations as well. This is just my assumption but considering the KCBD article says “Copyright 2024 Gray Local Media, Inc. All rights reserved.” it looks like they are just regurgitating other news stories and presenting it as their own on all the Gray affiliates.

HonkTonkWoman ,

Ah, that’s a great catch.

Can we all chop in for a ticket to send him now, save him the trouble of trying to come up with nicknames for Harris and Walz that they don’t turn into positives? Like “Tampon Tim” …“He’s going to stop the red wave!” Which is how Trump ended up building Walz.

Edit: “chip” in. Economy of course.

Zipitydew ,

I’d rather this become terms for jailing him now. Sounds like a potential flight risk ahead of sentencing for his 34 felony counts.

BruceTwarzen , in Locking up items to deter shoplifting is pushing shoppers online

I don’t think it’s that necessarily. To me it’s things like that: i needed a toaster, and didn’t want to go on Amazon or whatever. I went to a real store and looked at toasters. I found one that fits my needs. The guy who worked there said they fon’t have that one here, but can order it. Neat, that’s just like me ordering it, bun inconvenient and more expensive.

Same thing happened when i needed a new food processor. They didn’t have the one i wanted, so i took the expedition model they had (yeah i’m an idiot). At home i realised that some parts were missing. So back to the store. They had to order a new one after talking to 3 people, and then pick it up again. So instead of ordering it for cheaper and picking it up from my porch, i wasted like 2 hours to take 3 trips to pay extra. And brick and mortar stores are dying? That’s crazy

DJDarren ,

Here in the UK there are a number of bigger chain shops that are effectively running their websites as a kind of Amazon, and it’s really frustrating.

Needed a specific chainring for my bike, so went to Halfords website. They had what I wanted, but not in stock. Meaning, when I bought it, they then ordered it from their supplier to collect a few days later.

I needed a cheap tool for a single job from B&Q. Looked on their website, saw they had one for £3, drove up there to get it. But that one is online only, and the cheapest they keep in store is £6.

It’s like the shittiest bits of in store and online all mashed together, and it sucks.

BruceTwarzen ,

Every time i go to a store and something like that happens i wanna yell: AREN’T YOU WORRIED? YOU ARE THE FIRST ONES WHO GET REPLACED BY A COMPUTER. I hate amazon with a passion, but once i got a empty carton (because someone stole it) it took me one phonecall and 0 proof or anything and they just send it again. I haven’t used their customer support often, but if i did it was super good, compared to when i have to go to the store. Where is the original recipe? Oh it’s opened? This is not how it was packaged originally and so on.
