Toneswirly , in Family died in Rockies after trying to live ‘off the grid,’ official says

I feel for the kid, who got dragged down by the hubris of his mom. It’s troubling that we’ve grown so disconnected from the world we’ve built; we dont feel like we benefit from it at all. We can all sit here and shame this mother for being neglectful and stupid, and yet the feelings she had of a chaotic life with no upside…that’s so fucking common right now.

JGrffn ,

Its a commonly floated idea among my circles, and by me personally, that we kinda just want to fuck off and build a comfy commune somewhere not too hot, not too cold, just away from cities, and try to be as self-sufficient as possible. Just a small group of friends and family. It’s kinda what I’m saving up for, if I’m honest, because buying a city house is just… Prohibitively expensive for what it is.

gerbler ,

Probably easier to survive in a commune of a few dozen than it would be in tents with 3 people. But yeah I think a lot of us have had dreams of fucking off to the wilds to live like a hermit.

I would probably last like 3 days and only if I’m being extremely optimistic.

rckclmbr ,

I mean, we kind of did this with lemmy right? Same thing with people escaping British rule to come to USA?

emeralddawn45 ,

The problem is that ‘we’ didn’t build this world. Our society was (is) shaped by people who’s situation and life experience have very little in common with the average person, and yet we continue to let them shape policy to their own benefit and our detriment because… money? Or something? Idk.

Blamemeta , in U.S. Capitol Police to open Texas field office, citing rising threats against members of Congress

Where can we find the ‘guidelines for bots’ as stated in #3, “Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.” ? It would be good to have a link to those guidelines in the Rules.

Thekingoflorda OP ,
@Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

They are instance rules: lemmy.world/post/1860512

Since the amount of bot devs is pretty small, we’ll probably not include it in the rules.

And since you need approval from us anyway, we can always send these rules again.

gAlienLifeform , in Feedback needed for new rules V2!
@gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

I think unless there’s a demonstrable factual inaccuracy in an article or if the source is on the blacklist a post shouldn’t be removed under rule 2. One person’s obvious ____ wing source is another person’s unbiased reporting.

I also think there should be some kind of notice when a site gets added to the blacklist where you lay out your reasoning and users can either challenge or support the decision.

I’m not trying to support the spread of misinformation and there are definitely some publications out there I don’t think anyone should ever read again, but this kind of rule can get out of control quickly and can create a lot of bitterness and chaos in a community if it’s not handled carefully imo.

Thekingoflorda OP ,
@Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

We’ll try to be reasonable with which sites we ban, but we are not perfect. So we invite discussion in the comment section of the blacklist post.

We would love to do that, but we simply don’t have the time. As mentioned, we won’t delete the posts that have url’s in the blacklist automatically, so when you get the message of the bot, and you find it unreasonable, you can discuss it with us.

gAlienLifeform ,
@gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, I must have missed the part about things not being automatically deleted, that makes all this feel a bit better.

We would love to do that, but we simply don’t have the time

That is totally fair, and thank you for all the time you already spend on this! So long as the blacklist is in the sidebar or some other prominent place that’s a reasonable time saving compromise.

Thekingoflorda OP ,
@Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

The blacklist will be available in this post: lemmy.world/post/2246130

I would suggest editorializes titles from the journalist themselves or even opinion journalism be removed. There is a lot of articles that get posted as factual but they’re literally just twisted titles that no one reads and it spreads disinformation because the journalist is editorializing the titles just to get clicks from their base.

Blamemeta , in UK accidentally sent military emails meant for US to Russian ally

Thats not true. The US leased the ml domain from Mali, and captured all there errant emails going there.

BrikoX OP ,
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

First of all, it was a private company that had a 10 year contract with the Mali government. Socond, it expired on July 17 and Mali is now back in control of them. So in this case Mali government actually have acess to these emails now.

LChitman ,
@LChitman@kbin.social avatar

And that company was Dutch. From what I remember, the US military was not very responsive to the news that this company had tracked thousands of emails that were supposed to go to .mil addresses.

    downpunxx , in Twitter under fire for reinstating account that posted child sex abuse
    @downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

    The Catholic Church has actively ran the longest largest worldwide Pedophile ring in human history. For the past 1800 years the Catholic Church recruited, supported, obfuscated, defended, and excused pedophilia, which continues to this day. The fact the Catholic Church still allowed to operate, in any way shape or form, with youth of any kind, in any country, anywhere, means we've all purposefully lost the thread. Beside the Catholic Church being criminal, it's only shown how very little adults care about the systematic raping of children. Like, at all.

    Bipta ,

    Evidence that this plagued the Catholic Church from the start is a your burden to produce with this claim.

    TopRamenBinLaden ,

    The evidence doesn’t quite go back 1800 years, but there is 1000 year old evidence against them. It isn’t tht hard to imagine that it was probably going on before then, too.

    “Sexual abuse in the Catholic Church has been reported as far back as the 11th century, when Peter Damian wrote the treatise Liber Gomorrhianus against such abuses…”

    Source here.

    fubo ,

    While Liber Gomorrhianus does mention clerical sexual abuse of children, it is for the most part concerned with homosexual acts among monks and priests, and also with (male) clergy engaging in unchastity with nuns or laywomen.

    None of these are presented as being common or accepted; rather they are all considered as disqualifying a man from the clergy for at least a period of years.

    That said —

    A cleric or monk who persecutes adolescents or children, or who is caught in a kiss or other occasion of indecency, should be publicly beaten and lose his tonsure, and having been disgracefully shaved, his face is to be smeared with spittle, and he is to be bound in iron chains, worn down with six months of imprisonment, and three days every week to fast on barley bread until sundown. After this, spending his time separated in his room for another six months in the custody of a spiritual senior, he should be intent upon the work of his hands and on prayer, subject to vigils and prayers, and he should always walk under the guard of two spiritual brothers, never again soliciting sexual intercourse from youth by perverse speech or counsel.

    dojan ,
    @dojan@lemmy.world avatar

    Children are great tools for oppression. All you have to do is say “but what about the children” and any argument against you is going to look villainous.

    It’s why every time there’s a social rights movement, the minority gets labelled as violent, rapist, paedophiles. See current state of the fight of trans rights.

    It’s important to note here that Catholics helped elect Trump in ‘16 and did their damnedest to re-elect him in ‘20.

    kromem ,

    the past 1800 years

    In the early 2nd century, the Roman satirist Lucian writes a story in which a guy facing imprisonment for molesting a young boy instead finds safe haven among the Christian church. Just a small detail in a larger story, but certainly fitting with the evidence of the institution since.

    And Paul, the guy who never met Jesus but co-opted his movement, had a habit of referring to himself as the Father of others, and calling others his children, and was attended by a much younger man named Timothy, and normalized kissing on the mouth as a greeting in four separate letters (behavior you’ll often see among archival footage of known pedophiles in the modern age such as Jimmy Savile).

    So it may have gone all the way back to the unmarried guy attended by a young boy having people call him Daddy and kissing them on the mouth who was routinely getting thrown out of towns by angry mobs, which is even further back than 1800 years…

    Hazdaz ,

    Based on what evidence? Or is it simply because she is a woman, she couldn’t possibly do something illegal, so she must have been forced into doing it?

    Did you even read the article? No. Of course not. She was found with like 30 g on her. What cartel is going to traffic drugs 30 g at a time?!?

    Oof

    Nythos ,

    So ignoring the potential coercion you still think it’s okay to execute someone over 30g of drugs?

The state removed elected school board members and the super indendant to have them replaced by the state government.

    Re #4: Can you clarify if the title should be the same as the page title, the article headline or either? I think either should be acceptable. Especially when the page title can be clickbaity or misrepresent the aritcle, but it’s the one that auto-generates when posting.

    Thekingoflorda OP ,
    @Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

    As mentioned in rule 4, we will only delete titles that are wrong or incorrect. Maybe we should rephrase that to “misrepresents the article”. Would that work?

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    I think that sounds better, yes.

    soyagi ,

    I strongly feel that we should not use clickbait headlines.

    gAlienLifeform , (edited )
    @gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

    I strongly feel I agree with this sentiment, people should be able to fix them if they’re able to, but I don’t know if I would be comfortable with a post getting removed because it used the original article’s clickbaity headline. Like, clickbait-iness is a little subjective, and re-writing a headline well can sometimes be tough if the story’s complex.
