schroedingershat , in Macron on how to stop young rioters: Get mum and dad to restore order

Remember kids! Fascism starts in the home! If we work together and stop empathy early we can keep punishing the poor and disadvantaged!

WaPo’s coverage of the 2016 Presidential race was a master class in journalistic nihilism. Why sure, let’s read their point of view on social media via a study they found that supports it.

Do gen-x era bus drivers now live in Australia, that is a Gen X move right there! Misbehave and you walk.

dojan ,
@dojan@lemmy.world avatar

I could see gen-z do it too. They give no fucks, since the world is ending anyway and none of us are rich enough to buy our way into politics and do something about it.

That was a form of detention for us. They'd keep us until the buses had left, then let us go. We had the choice of walking home or phoning our parents. I did a lot of walking in the '70s.

dojan ,
@dojan@lemmy.world avatar

My bus driver left if you didn’t make it on time. I say bus, but they were really just vans (Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro I believe) fitted to carry people, because it was a small school and we were all spread out on the countryside. We didn’t even call it a bus, it was “school taxi.”

My mother didn’t have a car or driver’s license, and no buses went anywhere near where we lived. There were a few occasions where I did miss the bus, so I had to walk home. Looking at Google Maps it says it’s only about a two hour walk. I recall it happening in the winter though, lots of snow, and me being fairly young (around 9 I think) I didn’t get home until half past nine in the evening haha.

AceBonobo ,

Sounds like you’re lucky to be alive. But yea, hour plus walks were definitely a thing when going places. Not even a big deal.

notacuban ,
@notacuban@lemmy.world avatar

We had a bus driver who’d drive away if he had already closed the doors, regardless of if he could see you running for the bus or if other students would tell him someone was coming.

Smug little prick used to whistle like a fucking 1950s Disney character while he did it, too.

I guess if you’re worried about that use a burner email. I’d suggest Proton, very easy to make a new account. No personal information required.

But I’ve been using it on Android problem free for quite some time and never heard of anything like that.

chameleon , in Analysis | Twitter rival Mastodon rife with child-abuse material, study finds

The report hints at it but doesn't really say it out loud: get rid of one particular server and there goes 99% of it, along with 90% or so of the overall Japanese userbase (as they were the first big Japanese instance and had a mostly-trusted locally relevant company behind it). But nearly every non-Japanese-orientated instance already either fully defederated from it or has something to strip media content from it. It's essentially its own thing not really related to Mastodon aside from the software in use.

unwinagainstable , in Elon May Have a Huge Issue Because Microsoft Owns the “X” Trademark

Yeah definitely don’t need to check that out beforehand

Galluf , in New Arkansas law removes work permit requirement for children under 16

I’m not seeing the issue here. The protections for approrptate child working conditions remain in place. It just eliminates the need to make a special application for every single worker.

I started refereeing soccer games at age 14 and didn’t have to go through any of that process. It was a great learning experience for me and gave me some spending money. I’m all for reducing the burden of hiring kids so that they can get exposure to the working world.

To be clear, I still very much think that there need to be strong protections for work hours, working conditions, and not being permitted to work in certain industries.

steakmeout ,

It must be nice to see children as an exploitable resource. And in classic conservative posturing you equate child labour with refereeing soccer games at age 14. Must be nice to look back and have such pleasant memories. I doubt these kids will be so wistful about industrialised farming, chicken preparation or other sweatshop jobs. I’m pretty certain you don’t even see these kids.

At 14 you had the support of your parents and a safety net of laws that made it so their oversight was baked into your employment. Lots of kids are poor and have families who can’t offer the sort of support and financial security you enjoyed.

Galluf ,

That is not an accurate characterization of my view.

steakmeout ,

You’re free to clarify at any point.

Galluf ,

Are you open to changing your view on aspects of this and discussing this topic with nuance?

steakmeout ,

You proferred the opinion so you need to clarify. I don’t need to be open to what you consider nuance.

Galluf ,

Thank you for your acknowledgement that you’re unwilling to look at this situation with the level of nuance required.

steakmeout ,

That isn’t what I said and you know it. If you feel misunderstood the onus is solely on you to clarify any misunderstanding. Pretending that you’re making this about me isn’t going to change your bad take or initial downvotes.

afraid_of_zombies ,

Children are not just an exploitable resource, they are a renewable one!

But yeah. I was one of those 14 year olds working jobs that were meant for adults. I don’t really have strong opinions about this law change but I am in the position that my kids will never have to do what I had to do as a teen.

steakmeout ,

Ah the classic “fuck you, got mine”.

Galluf ,

Not at all. It’s the exact opposite.

I want other kids to be able to have similar experiences with working and earning money.

steakmeout ,

Experiences like this?

Galluf ,

What do you mean by this?

Do you have a link that doesn’t get all shitty with mobile (iOS, if it matters)? Perhaps an archive.org or 12ft.io link? I’d copy/paste myself but it seems not to be ok with that.

When I try to click that it demands an app, which I’m not willing to install cuz fuck that. It does this even when I have all settings requesting desktop.

Nvm, went onto pc for this - non-paywall/app link
