SeaJ , in Elon May Have a Huge Issue Because Microsoft Owns the “X” Trademark

The design is also a unicode character.

lolcatnip ,

Sort of. It’s how some fonts render that character. I’ve noticed it tends to look like the Twitter logo with Android’s default font, but it’s noticeably different in Firefox on Windows.

vin , in ‘People need to be riled up’: meteorologist names US heatwaves after oil and gas giants

Brilliant idea! Could do other companies that lobby against decarbonisation. But wouldn’t this have trademark issues?

I thought you can only own a trademark in context.

Kinglink , in 'There was no kidnapping': Carlee Russell apologizes after admitting hoax

They’re looking for criminal charges, I hope the find one. Claiming to be kidnapped and starting to get a nationwide manhunt started? Fuck your ass.

There’s a 911 call to start this, she disappeared for 49 hours too. That is malicious intent, not a joke or “hoax”.

realcaseyrollins , in ‘I can’t die like this’: Video shows trans man beaten by LA County Sheriff's deputy during stop

The Sheriff’s Department has been under intense scrutiny in recent weeks for two other use-of-force incidents caught on camera, including one in which a deputy punched a woman in the face while trying to take her child.

This doesn't sounds like a case of anti-trans hate, which I was actually expecting

Wxnzxn ,
@Wxnzxn@lemmy.ml avatar

While the incident of the violence itself could have happened with the deputy unaware of brutalising a trans man, with the article not showing indications of this being the primary motivation, his treatment while in custody clearly shows further relevant mistreatment.

InverseParallax , in Paris to bring back swimming in Seine after 100 years

I mean, really?

I know it’s gotten better but last time I saw it I wouldn’t touch it with an enemy’s dick.

AnarchistArtificer ,

From the article, it seems like the largest problem was dumping of wastewater overflow that was beyond processing plants’ capacities. As part of this push to clean up the Seine (as part of a PR for the upcoming Olympics), they’ve built a large reservoir to temporarily store waste water overflow until things level off and the treatment plants can treat the water normally.

It sounds like a great step forwards in infrastructural improvements that will make a huge difference to the ongoing cleanliness of the water. I share many of your feelings, having seen the Seine myself a few years ago, but this article genuinely makes me feel hopeful

InverseParallax ,

I wish them the best of luck, it was a beautiful river before industrial and other waste destroyed it.

Beliriel , in DOJ sues Texas and Gov. Greg Abbott over Rio Grande barrier

Oh wow! The DOJ actually going for it. Can someone enlighten me on wether it’s simply a procedural error because there was no approval or if a request for such a thing would be denied anyway?

IphtashuFitz ,

I heard a radio report that the barrier is blocking navigation along the river. No idea if that’s actually the case or not, but if there is any sort of regular boat traffic (even just police boats etc) along there then that has the potential to be a big deal.

There are both international and national regulations pertaining to navigation, intended to ensure uniformity of those regulations no matter what body of water you’re on. The international regulations apply along coastal waters, while the US regulations apply to inland lakes, rivers, etc. I’m not sure which would apply here given the Rio Grande river is also an international border. But which one applies may have to do with whether the state/governor can legally overrule them in the name of “security”.

Are air fresheners illegal in LA?

something_random_tho ,

Technically yes, in the same way window tint or requiring a front license plate is.

The law is applied selectively to groups of people they don’t like and used as a justification to pull you over for doing nothing wrong.

ArugulaZ , in Analysis | Twitter rival Mastodon rife with child-abuse material, study finds

Luckily, I don't see anything like that on Mastodon. Unfortunately, I don't see much of anything on Mastodon.

Gnubyte OP ,

I’ve seen a lot of great stuff on Mastodon but when it starts to become overwhelmingly political, I dip out. Problem is that you have to follow an abrasive amount of random people to start seeing anything across their fediverse. Shit in the beginning, awesome/hits the mark at least in terms of twitter replacement - after you follow enough people.

ArugulaZ ,

You're right, I do need to build up my watch list. I'm just not sure where to start. I'll probably have to parasitize the watch lists of the few people I'm already watching.

eldrichhydralisk ,

Hashtags are also a good place to start! For example, if you’re looking for science content you can follow the hashtag. Once you have those posts coming in to your feed, start following the people and hashtags you’re seeing on the posts you like best. It’ll start snowballing from there.

Also, don’t worry too much about following too much at first. Get that feed populated, then pare it down later. Filtering is pretty powerful too, so a lot of times you can get the good parts of a hashtag and filter out the bad parts instead of the all-or-nothing following of some social media.

OldWoodFrame , in Vaccine politics may be to blame for GOP excess deaths, study finds

Democrats didn’t do everything right in terms of policy changes for Covid, and things like slow school re-opening had real negative impacts, but vaccine denial is just the biggest direct pipeline to higher deaths, it was really unconscionable and plenty of people were saying it real time.

In a less polarized time we would all agree on vaccines while allowing for state-by-state variance for when different types of businesses were allowed to start operating indoors again or whatever.

OldWoodFrame , in White House says it does not back Ukraine attacks inside Russia

I get that they are trying to do the “war isn’t so far from home” thing but it is a delicate balance to strike…as Ukraine well knows, an attack near your home is more likely to strengthen your resolve against the country that just attacked you.
