Someone please correct me if I’m wrong because I have trouble understanding this. But someone told me the other day that I’m the height of the Great Depression,1931(?), that the average American was making 88k in todays dollar.
Today the average American is making 33k. Is this true?
If this is true that would totally explain the amount of mental illness on top of climate change concerns. If it is true I don’t know why more people wouldn’t be talking about it
But for current times... 33k is a bit to low. I think official stats is that wage is 39K for all working adults. and closer to 50k for full time working adults. these are median, not averages. ie 50% makes less, 50% make more.
A lot of those claims are based on tax return numbers, which radically overestimate the average salary back then because only the richest people actually filed taxes during that time.
Don’t get me wrong, we’re not in a good place, but it’s not peak great depression bad.
I dunno. Seeing quasi hoovervilles popping up with communities of homeless people living in tents and I don’t even live in California. We are like 80% of the way to great depression but there is just more large scale manufacturing of food and entertainment these days
Yeah, okay, they were blocking part of a road. It was a four -lane. These two were in two lanes. Sounds like a police car was blocking the rest of the road
But some drugs might help you change your brain chemistry to be as narcissistic or just so singular focused that you can’t think about being depressed because you are focused on repetitive task work.
Good. Copyright violations for commercial gain are one of the most mindlessly over-penalized issue in the books. This time, it could actually used for good. Making millions out of copyright violations in the US is probably next to gang rape and mass murder.
Copyright laws are usually just abused by corporations to endlessly milk profit and hinder small time artists and creators. I don’t think it’s comparable to gang rape.
The part I found most interesting after several years of hearing statements to the contrary: the pandemic lockdowns reduced, significantly, the suicide rate, which shot up again after businesses started demanding RTOs two years into it.
After being told for so long that the lockdowns had caused problems with mental health, it’s interesting to see the exact opposite appears to have happened. COVID, sure, it’s caused problems (which would explain why rates went down then up once COVID had infected people and WFH started to end for so many people) and suggests the WFH-damages-mental health thing might just have been a bad faith meme introduced by our incompetent overlords…
Allowing insane right wing MAGA states’ Attorneys General to censor whatever content they want should scare the shit out of regular Americans. Does anyone really actually believe that they’ll stop with just transphobia?
Please contact your members of Congress to urge them to drop their support, this bill is straight old people don’t understand how the internet works garbage.
There should be no offsets. Either don’t pollute or pay a hefty tax proportional to the amount of pollution, those should be the options. If there are quotas, massively increased taxes past the quota, with no way of raising the quota.
Carbon storage should be an entirely separate matter, not something companies can buy into to excuse not optimizing what they’re doing.
Rich countries/politicians only pay lip service to caring about the planet. The most important thing to them is being re-elected, and that won’t happen if they remove subsidies for Big Oil/fracking projects or really invest in green infrastructure.
We can change that. They focus on the re-election issues they do because that’s what their voters seem to press for. They can’t read our minds, they have to rely on talking to us and polls and shit. They don’t care about these things though, they only care about what we say we vote for.
The democratic deficit, that’s the gap between what people want and what representatives do, is very high in the U.S.
As a climate lobbyist, this is 100% false.
The solution the African Climate Summit proposed is the ideal one - carbon taxes. Any politician pushing carbon taxes will get obliterated at the polls because Americans do not like paying taxes and especially do not like high fuels costs caused by paying taxes.
