@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

His painting that led to the suspension of the Mesa art exhibit, titled “My Florist is a Dick,” is seen by some as anti-police. It depicts a police officer in riot gear holding a baton with a flower growing out of it. The phrase ‘when his day starts your days end’ appears at the top right of the painting.

Sounds pretty fucking awesome to me, and I don’t even like Shepard Fairey’s work much.

Fuck the police.

EDIT: I looked it up. One of Fairey’s better works, for sure, but I’m still not a fan. Fuck the exhibitors though.

cristo ,

Its a cool piece of art. Kind of derivative of Banksy. Idk why people are being so pissy about it.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Well. It’s evocative. That’s for sure.

I like the style, I don’t think I like the way it makes me feel- and don’t think I’m really supposed to.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

See, I don’t like his style. Apart from (including this, I bet) appropriating other artists’ work- many of them black artists, not a good look for a white man- I just think the idea could be executed better. The cop doesn’t look menacing enough even though he’s dressed that way because the baton is at rest. The flower just looks bad. The idea itself is, shall we say, remarkably similar to a scene in the film Yellow Submarine, where the Blue Meanies try to fire their guns, but flowers grow out of them instead.

Regarding his work overall, the Andre the Giant Has a Posse thing was interesting as a meme, but I’ve just never thought of him much as an artist. Even the Obama portrait- which he also appropriated- didn’t do much for me.

But my personal feelings about Shepard Fairey has nothing to do with whether or not his work should be exhibited.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

If you really wanna get down to it, the vast majority of art is derivative.

Would I buy it? No. Is it similar to others? Absolutely. That doesn’t necessarily make it bad.(Also, check out cop’s face. That’s a skull.) (also? This guy is Native American, not white. This is an exhibit of native art.)

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You need to re-read the article. The guy I am talking about, Shepard Fairey, is white. And it was his art that was the issue. And by ‘appropriate,’ I mean he directly takes their pictures, slightly modifies them, then sells them. He got sued for doing it for the Obama photo because it’s just a copy of an AP photo he added some colors to and the word ‘Hope’ at the bottom.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

So he’s a copycat of Andrew Warhol.

betz24 , in Musk's interference to protect Russia allowed Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, and resulted in the deaths of civilians including children - Zelensky advisor.

Do we know what the details of the DoD contract outlined in terms of services provided? Musk seems to be retorting that the service was never meant to escalate conflict in the war, but I’d be curious what is actually on paper.

spaghettiwestern OP ,

Can you imagine the DoD signing a contract that literally blocks Ukraine from taking back territory that’s been occupied by Russia? Eventually Russia would occupy the entire country because Ukraine could never strike back. IMO Musk is a lying SOB.

betz24 ,

I don’t have a lot of knowledge in the subject to suppose, but I would think if this was a violation of the contract, the DoD contracts team would be litigating with Elon and slapping him with a fine. Considering we haven’t heard anything (yet) it sounds like to me it wasn’t a violation of the terms. I’m not an Elon fan the slightest, but I have worked with the US government in the past and the SoW or whatever is in the PO is what is the required deliverables. As much as I also want Ukrainian independence, I have not seen anywhere that defines Starlink for offensive purposes. The contracts team at DoD is probably equally to blame if they didn’t outline the conditions that Starlink has to operate.

spaghettiwestern OP ,

IMO there is no way the contract would be written in such a way to allow Musk to shut off the service when he decides that his side is going to take too many losses. Companies and people violate contracts all the time and the only thing you can do in response is take them to court. That can take years and cost millions.

“there is no way…” someone has been drinking the anti-musk kool-aid. The USG has done the exact same shit before with F16s and yet when Elon does it because of the USG, all we hear is Elon bad.

spaghettiwestern OP , (edited )

A small sampling of Musk’s lies, most of which have been known for years…

He says he founded Tesla. Nope. Nor did he design the company’s first roadster. He lied and is still lying about Tesla’s “Autopilot.” Musk lied about the Hyperloop and getting approval for a multi-billion dollar government contract to build it. He lied about having “Funding secured” for taking Tesla private, was sued by the SEC, cost investors millions and was ultimately forced out of his position as Tesla chairman because of it.

Musk lied about buying Twitter and only followed through when he was facing discovery because he was being sued - a nightmare for any malignant narcissist. He lied about honoring the results of Twitter polls he posted. Musk even lies about meaningless things like showing up for a cage match with Zuckerberg.

The USG has allowed a single individual to disable F16’s on a whim? Nope, never happened.

When’s your “cage match” with Musk, or will you just beg him for an autograph?

jarfil ,

Yes: this happened before any contract with the DoD, so the terms of service were “none”.

Can you explain what this table is?

PeleSpirit ,

The grand jury in Georgia was asked to vote on whether or not the names listed should be indicted. The middle is the yes, no, and, I think abstain count, but I’m not positive. The last column was whether they were indicted or not. There was one name that I didn’t see listed in the indictment but was indicted.
