Something_Complex , in An Alabama woman is missing after stopping to help a toddler she saw walking on the interstate, police say

Yo wtf, that is some demonic shit

MicroWave OP ,
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah like what

When officers, who were already en route from the initial 911 call, arrived at the scene, they found Russell’s vehicle and some of her belongings, including her phone, but no sign of her or the child. Police have not received any reports or calls for a missing child, according to the Facebook post.

GONADS125 ,

No, just human trafficking probably…

lagomorphlecture , in An Alabama woman is missing after stopping to help a toddler she saw walking on the interstate, police say

Well this is seriously messed up and terrifying. Did someone with access to a toddler put the toddler on the interstate to lure out a victim??? I certainly hope the child and the woman are ok but that conjures up such messed up scenarios and it’s very sad.

GONADS125 ,

I had multiple training seminars by my (former) large mental health organization on human trafficking due to how pervasive it is in this region/Route 66… (I’ve heard it referred as the human-trafficing highway.)

These human-trafficing pieces of shit will absolutely use children as bait. They won’t just traffic children, but women who can be opportunistically abducted as well. I personally believe that’s what has happened to this poor young woman…

I had a client who escaped from human traffickers… She was abducted in the Midwest and trafficked to Texas. They kept her drugged up and that caused her to have substance use disorder when she escaped. She tried to escape and they caught her, and pistol-whipped really bad on the back of the head. She woke up from being unconscious with her head covered in blood, and climbed out a window and finally escaped. She called her parents states away instead of 911. Can’t imagine that call for her parents…

She really should’ve had medical intervention… She had some degree of traumatic brain injury and her parents told me it made her schizophrenia symptoms and dysfunctional behavior much worse. I only worked with her shortly after this all happened.

Her family hadn’t even reported her missing and thought she was not speaking to them/doing her own thing again. Human traffickers are largely opportunistic, but they will prey on the disadvantaged if they can. Some are more organized, and I knew of someone who was warned that their mixed-race child was being actively watched by human traffickers on their own street, because the child’s unique features make them more valuable/sought after…

And people don’t realize that human-trafficing isn’t all sexual. There is a horrifying number of human-trafficing victims in the US that are modern-day indentured servants/slaves for physical labor. Their handlers employee nefarious means to keep them under control, like holding passports, ensuring there is a language barrier, threats of violence, etc…

Human trafficking is a much more widespread issue in the US than people realize…

FlyingSquid , in Elon Musk says Twitter cash flow is negative due to ad revenue declines, ‘heavy debt’
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What? The super genius couldn’t turn it into a cash machine? I thought he was the smartest (and funniest) person on the planet!

Bonehead ,

I think this is the saddest part, at least for him. Before Twitter, a lot of people thought he was relatively intelligent to be a part of a groundbreaking electric car company, a crazy tunnel digging company, and wild space vehicle company doing innovative things. Now since Twitter, we see an insanely rich narcissistic meglomaniac that was kept out of most Tesla big decisions as he just wanted the publicity for himself, the tunnel digging company was nothing more than a way to interfere with green projects, SpaceX did the same thing as Tesla and succeeded despite Musk's involvement, and a once respected medium of open communication worth a reported $44 billion dollars devolve into a cess pool of bigotry and arbitrary restrictions. Whatever good will he built for himself over the years that saw him even get a cameo in a Marvel movie next to Tony Stark, he's burned through most of it in the eyes of a lot of people.

It's great for everyone with imposter syndrome! I used to fear I was too inexperienced, inept, unprofessional... but then this happened 😅

whatsarefoogee ,

Does your daddy own an emerald mine though? That’s kind of the key here.

rtxn ,

SpaceX and Tesla both grew with his continuous involvement. The managers were trained (out of necessity) to keep his “genius” in check without destroying the company or getting themselves fired. In a sense, Musk’s continuous presence gave the companies a form of immunity.

When he infested the bird, the managers didn’t know how to protect it. It was like bringing smallpox to the new world.

Also, there were no managers left after Musk’s big purge

collin93 , in Sheriff says baby dies after teen mom put fentanyl in bottle

I don’t understand the thought process here. Even if it wasn’t fentanyl, she thought “I need the baby to sleep. Oh yeah, coke should do the trick.”

ThePantser ,
@ThePantser@lemmy.world avatar

Teen mom forced to give birth and then becomes exhausted and mentally unstable from postpartum depression and does something unthinkable but they are unstable and lack maturity.

clockwork_octopus ,

Exactly this. This is why it’s absolutely imperative that pregnancies and births are not forced on anyone.

Garbanzo , in Sheriff says baby dies after teen mom put fentanyl in bottle

Florida: Abortions after six weeks are illegal.
17 year old mother: Oh yeah? Watch this.

Sharpiemarker ,

That was my gut feeling as well… This country has been spiraling in recent years.

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever , in Teen Passenger Detained In Airport For 'Skiplagging'

Few aspects to this:

  1. Yes, this is sticking it to the airlines. It is also sticking it to other passengers. Airlines generally try to get people on their flights (if only to avoid rebooking) AND accommodate crazy people flying on standby. When someone is “in the airport” because their plane landed it is assumed they are going to get on the plane. When they get done group 20 and that person hasn’t shown up, it triggers a mess of figuring out what to do, who can board in their place, etc. All of which leads to delays for everyone involved
  2. Airlines are REALLY stupid and pretty much function entirely on the backs of the gate agents. So if a gate agent cared enough to report “something is hinky” then that means they either dealt with a REALLY shitty day or they recognized the name of a no show.

So yeah. Like in almost all cases: Those heroes who “stick it to the corporations” are mostly just inconveniencing other customers and the poor bastards who have customer facing roles.

ristoril_zip ,

Seems like the solution to this is to go to the gate for your next flight and tell them you’re not going. Family emergency, you’re feeling sick, suddenly afraid to fly, or no need to even give a reason.

It is shitty to just ghost them for the reasons mentioned here. Just like ghosting is always shitty.

SamXavia ,
@SamXavia@lemmy.world avatar

I just sometimes browse it, that and I use it when things like Uber Eats and other services seem to not work as companies seem to get back to so much quicker on there than any ‘help service’. I’ve posted way more on Mastodon than ever on Twitter. So not really much keeping me about tbh just want to be able to see things such as Minecraft info or sometimes put out a thought. Also some of my contacts only speak through Twitter as of the moment.

rehabdoll ,

Thanks for replying. Personally I struggle to see what the use of it ever was. But that’s on me and my reality. Thanks for giving me insight :-)

frozenicecube , in Florida ocean temperatures peak to almost 100 degrees amid heatwave: "You really can't cool off"

Buffalox ,

Higher temperature is equal to more energy in the atmosphere, the result is worse hurricanes.

…oh. Oh, that’s gonna make hurricane season bad.

QuinceDaPence ,

To really get the answer there you need surface temperature and temperature 100ft deep.

The surface can be hot but if it's cool deeper then then the storm churns it up and the cold water calms it down.

Tygr , in 7.2 earthquake strikes off southern Alaskan coast, tsunami advisory no longer in effect

3DKungFu ,

I was in Whittier when it happened and I’m in Anchorage now. Can confirm that nothing was felt. Just a brief tsunami warning.

MrFappy , in Insurance may not cover birth control drug Opill without prescription

I feel like this is similar to asking your insurance to cover NyQuil and Tylenol. Not exactly unreasonable for them to stick to what they’ve been covering so far, and not expanding into otc just because it is birth control. It’s equivalent also to asking them to buy your condoms.

Catoblepas ,

The thing is your doctor can absolutely prescribe you Tylenol (or at least acetaminophen), and your insurance will cover it. I’ve been prescribed ibuprofen before. Just because it’s over the counter doesn’t mean your doctor can’t prescribe it, and the OTC things insurance will cover already is pretty broad: diabetes supplies and COVID tests, for example.

Absolutely_Clueless ,

I would’ve assumed the insurance companies would weigh the cost of birth control vs. the costs associated with pregnancy and childbirth and that they’d prefer the cheaper option, but I’m not sure how exactly medical insurance works in the U.S so maybe I just have an idealistic view!

I was surprised there were no incentives from my pet insurance for me getting my dogs spayed, but they were quite clear that they didn’t cover any costs relating to having puppies and I would hope medical insurance would cover pregnancy and childbirth…

Kolanaki , in Insurance may not cover birth control drug Opill without prescription

Isn’t this drug supposed to be OTC? The first article I saw about it was about it being the first OTC medication of its kind.

Yes. This and the headline are not mutually exclusive.

partial_accumen , in Iran's morality police to resume headscarf patrols

I don’t see that going well for those headscarf police. The populace isn’t putting up with it anymore. Those police are going to be beaten up pretty badly at least.

MicroWave OP , in Federal judge rules Oregon’s tough new gun law is constitutional
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut ruled that banning large capacity magazines and requiring a permit to purchase a gun falls in line with “the nation’s history and tradition of regulating uniquely dangerous features of weapons and firearms to protect public safety,” Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

They are going to have a hard time proving magazine capacity limits have historical precedent on appeal. Such gun control was only implemented within the last few decades.

Blamemeta ,

Well, older than that. Gun control are the last of the Jim Crow laws. Its why you have to pay giant tax stamps and get permits and all, its to keep minorities from arming themselves.

    Where’d you hear this hot take?

    Here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here

    We can keep going if you want more links and maybe a peer-reviewed study. Any form of limiting firearms is rooted in racism to restrict minorities from having agency in their communities.

    @JustZ how the fuck are you a lawyer and never understood the history of firearm legislation? Nepotism sounds likely.

    Blamemeta ,

    Thanks. I wouldn’t have bothered to get links, and definitely not that many links.

    commandar ,

    I also can't see this part surviving appeal:

    Large capacity magazines “are not commonly used for self-defense, and are therefore not protected by the Second Amendment,” Immergut wrote.

    Oregon set the capacity limit at 10 rounds. Practically every handgun commonly used for self-defense has a capacity of at least 15.

    BaroqueInMind ,
    @BaroqueInMind@kbin.social avatar

    The judge is dumb because I, an idiot, can not read anywhere in the U.S. Constitution where it says the Second Amendment was written with self-defense in mind.

    It literally only says that everyone can own a firearm because a militia (an organization that exists outside of the military or law enforcement institutions, but answers to a state governor) is necessary to maintain a free country protected from any threats to the country.

    And a militia can't exist without regular people being able to own guns, so they can train with them, hence where it says "well regulated militia": meaning in good working order. You can't have a militia in good working order without being able to train with your firearm.
