I feel bad the kid he had a privileged shit life. But going out into the middle of the Alaskan wilderness to survive with no formal training was punching way above his weight…
The thing that dawned on me when I watched it as an older adult was his sheer selfishness. Smug, cliched little prick. His father’s violence aside, what about the rest of his family?
The movie was not presented as a cautionary tale. The theme of the movie was his romance with the wild and his romance with being a bitter hermit. Blame the producers.
More like a cautionary tale to not be an idiot and be better prepared. He didn’t even have a map with him. We’ve lived off grid as a species for far longer than this pampered society we live in now. If people choose to live this way, they should be free to. That’s basically what communes are, and as climate change gets worse, we’ll likely start seeing many more of them across the country.
Except he dies alone at the end, so it was definitely a cautionary tale.
If the last recent years has taught us anything, it’s that how you present a thing matters a lot more than what the thing is that’s actually being presented. Unfortunately.
Pretty much, which is why I consider the Fight Club movie a complete flop, maybe not financially, but it fails at its own message so hard that only the dudebros it mocks like it.
or, hear me out, movies don’t need to be lectures and is ok to just do something for the entertainment/artistry/visuals/storytelling of it.
I can tell you that I’m the opposite of what the movie depicts, I’m fragile, never been in a fight, I sincerely hope that will never be in one, I cried like a baby in ET or the time traveles wife, the Schindler’s list broke my heart, I dislike the dudebro dynamics, and I adore that movie. I also like horror movies as a genre and I don’t go around killing people.
It’s fine that you use movies as lectures of life and ethics, or that you don’t enjoy them if they don’t have a message that you agree with, but some people like them for other reasons, so please try not to profile people for what they like to watch.
It’s not that I dislike Fight Club for “not having a message”, but for the fact that it’s meant to have a message according to the director and the writer of the book, but the movie doesn’t depict what that message is very well.
sorry I wasn’t clear, my criticism wasn’t towards you not liking the movie, anyone have their own taste and there is nothing wrong with it, we all just want to enjoy things :-)
My problem was about you profiling people that do like the movie as “dudebros”, that wasn’t very nice IMHO
There are many things in Fight Club that are enjoyable, snappy dialogue, clever moments (I wonder if beating the shit out of yourself in a CEO’s office just as security arrives to create an awkward situation has any chance of working irl)
However, the film has attracted a rather toxic cult following that seem to think Tyler Durden’s the good guy… and sadly the film’s most vocal fans are from this group.
I personally have seen the flick twice and did not much care for it myself, just for the record (So you don’t get the impression I judge the film’s quality solely on this subgroup)
thanks for the clarification, I appreciate it :-) . I have quite the opposite experience, as people I know like it are mostly cinema enthusiast and like it mostly for its cinematic features, definitely not a teaching film.
Maybe is a geographical thing, although to be fair I would never have a friend so full of himself as Tyler, so I may have a selection bias.
For me was the presentation of Marla that I remember the most, such interesting way of introducing a character.
A lot of stuff sounded illegal. Poor storage is illegal when dealing with bio safety hazards of this level, poor labeling too. Sounded like they didn’t have protocols available or even approved by review boards which is illegal. I doubt they even had proper bio safety ratings which would be illegal in this case. The whole situation sounds extremely dangerous and I hope no harm has been done.
You can’t just decide to set up a medical lab and do experiments with infectious diseases and animals without permits and licences and oversight, you know.
Im convinced this virus has effected peoples brains the shift in people who are just...just.. morons has notably increased both on the highways and in person since covid, mental illness lately?
I’m not sure how demolishing renewable energy sources is going to help protect the environment during a climate crisis.
For my two cents, demolish the last fossil fuel power plants in a country, and we can then start taking a look at hydroelectric dams to tear down for environmental concerns.
this is so dumb. the solution is easy. MORE TIRES, GUYS. c’mon. so simple. there’s so many tires and we’re just wasting them. We need to get them in that ocean asap. literally no way it won’t work.
I hate the fact that there’s a stand for the books that is this prominent. If someone is closeted and wants to borrow one, there’s no chance in hell to do it discreetly. It’s like a big neon sign… Very inconsiderate if you ask me.
And I’m sure they have a copy of each book on the display on their regular shelves, and it’s more like “hey, here’s some LGBT+ books we have, there’s more on the shelves.”
If that was the only place you could get pride books? Sure
But I can only assume that there are other pride books around the library, and I think having a designated pride section is good for those who want it.
And likely this was just for Pride month, and anyone wanting the books who is closeted can get them much more discretely later, or make a request with a librarian.
As someone who flies a lot for both work and travel, Delta is by far the best of the domestic airlines for customer service. Their planes aren’t as new as American/United, but they make up for it with better service. Alaska is decent but doesn’t fly nearly as many places, and they also give long, annoying “sign up for our credit card” speeches on every flight.
Jesus these comments act like curing diseases is just a matter of attention and throwing money at it. Cancer still exists because it turns out science is actually really complicated. While we’ve made breakthroughs, they come at huge amounts of time and money (see KRAS G12D inhibitor).
Take fibrosis in the lungs post-COVID. That’s scar tissue. Your body magically stitched you up. The cells that were previously there for air exchange died, and are not coming back. Lungs don’t continually grow at adulthood. If they did, it would be prone to cancer, which is also going to be a huge risk if a treatment ever gets far enough to undo tissue fibrosis and stimulate proliferation of the existing cells in the lung. Not to mention they need instruction to form the alveolar structures (no way how they’re going to do that, they formed by budding in embryogenesis).
People think scientists are taking their sweet time on it, but don’t even have the patience to understand the problem in the first place.
My cousin was doing research into chronic fatigue syndrome (which shares a lot with some versions of long covid, and still isn't 'solved') back in the 1990's. It's going to take time.
Edit: "Today, the National Institutes of Health launched and is opening enrollment for phase 2 clinical trials that will evaluate at least four potential treatments for long COVID, with additional clinical trials to test at least seven more treatments expected in the coming months. Treatments will include drugs, biologics, medical devices and other therapies. The trials are designed to evaluate multiple treatments simultaneously to identify more swiftly those that are effective." - source
I remember him telling Philip Rosenthal that the reason he developed Pee-wee Herman was that Reubens had a horrible memory for jokes, and so he just built a persona that was inherently funny without them.
He drove his car the wrong way on the freeway to hit the girls. You can argue about the label terrorist, but he’s certianly a murderer .
On 4 July 2020, the Washington state patrol said Kelete drove the wrong way on to Interstate 5 in Seattle, around a barricade of parked vehicles, and struck both Taylor and Diaz Love.
Murderer, and mentally ill. Which is almost always the case with these kinds of things. I think we as humans try to look for a single cause of problems and it’s always a mix of things
Dawit Kelete’s a massive piece of shit but almost certainly not a terrorist. He most likely knew the interstate would be blocked off at night (it had been nightly for a week or two) and took the opportunity to go hot rodding in his car. He definitely knew he illegally went up an off ramp since he has lived here in Seattle for a couple decades. Terrorism implies he did it for political purposes. There is occasional beef between East African immigrants and the black community here but there is no evidence of that here and he has no history of that. He also does not have a history of harassing the LGBTQ community which Summer was a part of.
What is also certain is that he did not accidentally go up an offramp like shit heads on the right have suggested. He has lived in this city for over 20 years. That is not some unknown offramp he would be unfamiliar with. He knew what he was doing was illegal and it got someone killed.
Yeah, seems like all the articles written about the incident report on vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assult and wreckless driving.
Kelete’s attorney claims as much, “This tragic event was not a political act or statement," said attorney Francisco A. Duarte, who is representing Kelete
