Frankly, I’m surprised he’s an “ex” priest.

That bugged me too. He wasn’t a priest, left the church, then molested kids. He was a catholic priest who molested kids.

In the 2000 election in Duval County Florida they threw out over 22,000 votes from the 4 predominately black precincts that trend hard for Dems on the north sdie if Jacksonville. Out of 14 disctricts. A machine discarded these votes and the receipts for count machines were discarded similar to other counties that rushed to discard recorded evidence.

www.salon.com/2000/11/13/duval/

The Secretary of State that ultimately certified the faked vote tallies was Katherine Harris, under the Governor, Jeb “Please clap” Bush, brother of Bush Jr. It was a full rat fuck scenario.

pinkdrunkenelephants ,

How the fuck is it even possible for a political party to steal an election and we all just roll over and take it because the Supreme Court sided with them?

I thought the system was ours to use as we please, not them.

ChickenLadyLovesLife ,

FWIW Bush Jr. was showered with abuse and had eggs thrown at him and he had to abandon the traditional walk to the Capitol at his inauguration, and he was deeply unpopular at the start of his term. Only 911 bailed him out.

pinkdrunkenelephants ,

But it never should have even gotten that far. The people should have revolted and did the election over again.

HawlSera ,

If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that the revolution will not be televised, because it isn’t coming.

Your best hope is to pray the aliens come and take us away from this place, leave the corpos, let them do with the Earth what they want.

This is not a realistic thing to hope for.

pinkdrunkenelephants ,

I remember demanding revolution as a college kid on Reddit and getting torn out for it. It’s part of why I hate Reddit. And of course I was right, but they didn’t want to listen because they either secretly agreed with the authoritarianism or they only cared about being able to keep going to McDonald’s and 7-11.

Our people have turned out to be so disgusting and disappointing. I honestly wonder if I shouldn’t expatriate.

HawlSera ,

This world is lost, all that’s left is to hope for the next life to be more than a fantasy.

Unfortunately I’ve heard it all before “The Right is just being given enough rope to hang themselves, these are the death cries of an old system” or “Eh, Donald Trump’s a joke, those really in command already have it set for Hillary” or “People will revolt this time for REALSIES! They’ve just gone too far THIS TIME!” or “We’ll find a way if it comes to that.”

I pray for death, and for death to not be the end, the world is already lost.

Odd_so_Star_so_Odd ,

The revolution is whenever people quit doing whatever the tv tells them and start unionizing/growing their network of relations to demand change.

Democrats, as a party, think that way. Republicans absolutely hate Democrats, though, and would light them all with gasoline if they could.

voluble ,

I’m not a fan of either of those individuals. I know Stone has claimed to have played a part (he claims a lot of things and frankly I don’t trust a word that comes out of his mouth), but are you saying Trump was tied to the Brooks Brothers riot in 2000? That’s news to me, and I would be interested to read more about that if you could point me in the right direction.

Thisisforfun ,

Trump was doing a third party run to pull votes away from the democrats and then he killed that party by calling them nazis (which they clearly weren’t)

Also, this part I’m unsure of, I think he bankrolled Stone at the time?

Point is it was a very wide net of fucking the system.

The American experiment in federalism is a failure. You need to abolish states power and become a true unitary government. The alternative is another civil war.

CrayonRosary ,

Eliminating the states would cause civil war. I guess it’s just inevitable then.

Drivebyhaiku ,

I know it’s useless to try and unbunch the State’s underwear outta their ass about taking away their “States rights” but really from the outside there are plenty of places with Provinces / prefectures / states that still have individual character and bylaw WITHOUT binding their citizens by what is in effect the sovereignty of two separate competing countries.

Folk in the states seem to make it all about how free it makes everyone… But from over here it looks more like some kind of beaurcratic bondage fetish.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, I think they will care when cops bust down their door and bring them out in cuffs.

thepianistfroggollum ,

Yeah, that’s not going to happen for a warrant In Georgia if it didn’t happen for illegally hoarding classified documents and lying about it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You mean the thing the indicted people turned themselves in for and thus there were no warrants?

NewNewAccount ,

We’re beginning to see the consequences now.

Pringles ,

Either the title has been changed in the past 5 minutes, or you would fail even the most basic reading comprehension test.

Buffalox , (edited )

Obviously he is not alone. sigh

Judging by his upvotes and your downvotes.

thepianistfroggollum ,

I mean, you’re the one who failed reading comprehension. The title is 100% intentionally misleading.

Buffalox , (edited )

First Paragraph:

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) late Monday gave former President Trump and 18 co-defendants until Aug. 25 at noon to voluntarily surrender in Georgia following an indictment that unveiled multiple charges in connection to their attempts to interfere in the 2020 election.

That’s basically exactly what the headline says:

Fani Willis says Trump, 18 co-defendants to voluntarily surrender in Georgia by Aug. 25

The word “WILL” is your own and is NOT in the headline, if they don’t do it voluntarily by that time, they will be arrested. So they are supposed to surrender voluntarily, if they don’t, the alternative is worse.

The article headline is spot on. How you (ATM) get 14 upvotes for your wrongful criticism is weird???

surewhynotlem ,

“Jack to jump out of airplane” is a valid title. In titles you can shorten “will” to “to” and remove words like “an”.

So it’s an easy mistake to make.

Buffalox ,

Yes that’s true.

But in this case it would be with an or else appended. You will surrender or else…

That’s still a bit of an overinterpretation of what the headline actually says.

thepianistfroggollum ,

Because it’s not spot on. ‘To’ in this context means will. There’s no implied ‘gave’ except for what you inferred.

The person who wrote the headline specifically wrote it in a way that makes it sound Trump and his co-defendants were going to voluntarily turn themselves in because, “DA tells Trump he needs to turn himself in” isn’t going to get clicks.

JustZ ,
@JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t remember that rule from the Chicago Manual. Where’d you get it?

Buffalox , (edited )

There is an indictment, is it not normal that if people don’t respond to that, they are arrested by the court?

JustZ ,
@JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, if they are in the state or deemed a fugitive of justice, in which case a warrant can be served out of state upon application to the foreign state.

30mag , in New Covid vaccines are on the way as 'Eris' variant rises

Are these vaccines only supposed to keep symptoms mild, or will they prevent catching it?

hitmyspot ,

Like all the vaccines do far, they will likely reduce your risk of catching it and reduce your symptoms and risk of hospitalisation or death. None have eliminated the chance to catch it or get symptoms.

That’s not to say they don’t work. That’s how they work. They make your immune system better at dealing with them. Each new variant and time increases your risk again.

Alwaysfallingupyup ,

they help you catch it

Kage520 ,

If it’s very effective for this strain, it might be like 90% effective at not getting it. But there are more strains that will have less effect. As others are saying, symptoms should be more mild if you do get it.

lolcatnip ,

Yes

scrubbles ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

You’ll come in contact with it probably. The vaccines help the immune system catch it earlier before its taken hold. That’s why covid is such a hard disease to fight naturally, by the time your immune system sees it it has to ramp up to 1000 to fight it off, and then the worst symptoms are what your immune system is causing. (Fever is just your body trying to make it inhospitable to the virus after all).

Vaccines are an early detector, you already have antibodies so it can say whoa whoa whoa I know what you are, gonna get you out now before you take hold. Some people will have it gone before symptoms start. Others will have some symptoms but a milder version.

I personally had the vaccines and got it and it felt like the worst flu I’d ever had, and the main symptoms lasted about 3 weeks.

MyOpinion , in Girl, 13, gives birth after she was raped and denied abortion in Mississippi

Wow that is some serious bullshit right there. For the rest of this girls life she is going to have to share custody with the man that raped her.

Serinus ,

Sounds like a middle eastern thing. Wonder what the link is.

HejMedDig ,

It’s not a middle eastern thing, It stems from people in power who don’t see women as having any value, except as house slaves/property. Those people try to justify their ideas by pointing to old texts, where other similar minded people have snuck in the notions of women as property or of less value than men.

Serinus ,

Religious fanaticism.

HejMedDig ,

That’s what it has become, but I don’t think any of the old religions was founded on the oppression of women, but people in power have conveniently added that sort of thing, when religion became a tool of power

Serinus ,

Religion was invented as a tool of power, whether used for good or bad. Don’t eat “unclean” animals because they make people sick or kill you. That message apparently didn’t work as well as “God says no”.

Zombiepirate ,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

So you see a story about sexual violence in Mississippi and your first thought is “I bet a Muslim did this.”

Makes total sense; the good ol’ Christian boys in Missisip are beyond suspicion.

Serinus ,

I guess sarcasm doesn’t translate well over text, even in a case that I thought was clear.

The anti-abortion laws in much of the US are a pretty extreme measure to control women. The area of the world that practices the most extreme control of women is the middle east. The link between the two besides that is religious extremism, regardless of religion.

The people most afraid of “sharia law” are the ones passing sharia laws.

At no point did I intend to blame Muslims for Christians doing the exact same shit. My point was the hypocrisy of those American Christians and the direction they seem intent on pursuing.

rambaroo ,

In Saudi Arabia she would been allowed an abortion. Saudi Arabia is literally more progressive in this area than Mississippi.

mightyfoolish ,

Look at that. Using Islamophobia as an excuse to be racist against several large people groups/ cultures. Such enlightenment.

No, my thought is that it sounds like religious extremism. And the principles of y’all Qaeda aren’t much different from the terrorists they claim to hate.
