"Old woman moralizes at cloud"

Those 'good old days' she harkens back to weren't so good for a lot of people who didn't look like her or live in her neighborhood. She and her ilk are concerned about the veneer of civility, of the performative politeness that people used to have to show to the privileged in our society; not being a better society, but maintaining for the privileged the illusion they're part of a better society.

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. When the populace is under extreme stress to grab their share of the miniscule amount of crumbs that fall from the rich man’s table - leading to thousands of homeless and/or unable to find work that pays a living wage - that is when we lash out over seemingly insignificant incidents … because the majority of us are burnt out and bled out from the rich pushing us to fill their coffers.

The satisfaction we should have from a good day’s work has disappeared, and we are the shells of what’s left.

Twitter/X is going to end up selling boner pills and conspiracy theories. Way to burn through 44 billion dollars, Elmo.

He dismantled a liberal and progressive worldwide platform, that was 44 billion well spent to him and his financial backers. Everything else is just his personal fun, kinda like how you drive a scrap car through the fields one last time to see how long it runs without oil.

I’m not seeing where the “return on investment” comes in. I just see a lot of wasted money.

Sheeple ,
@Sheeple@lemmy.world avatar

The return in investment is the rise of fascism. Capitalists are scared of the people and are trying to control the narrative now.

the_third ,

If we take from the list of investors e.g. the Saudis - one revolution like the Arab Spring not happening is worth alone the entire 44 billion, but of course their share was smaller than that,

admiralteal , in This Louisiana Town Runs Largely on Traffic Fines. If You Fight Your Ticket, the Mayor Is Your Judge.

All the other corruption and such aside, imagine how terrible this is for the urban development of your town.

The municipal government has no incentive to invest in forward-thinking policy that will lead to healthier and more economically sustainable communities. If they invest in any kind of maintenance or developments that increase road safety - and thus decrease fines - it hurts the government's ability to operate. Indeed, they have direct Financial incentive to make the roads less safe. Not to even mention that they have no incentive at all to do things that improved the city in ways that won't affect their traffic fines.

They've committed to giving up on good governance of their small town. They found a way to function by just parasitizing others. They've given up.

tallricefarmer ,
@tallricefarmer@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yes this village basically exists to give traffic tickets, and everyone else in the area hates them. Talking about building city infrastructure here is kind of absurd. Sure the mayor-judge could start attempting civil projects, but the 226 residents live there because of how things are now.

Smaller cars? Over my dead body! Literally.

Rivalarrival ,

Have you tried to buy a small car/truck lately?

zalgotext ,

Yes :(

spyd3r ,
@spyd3r@sh.itjust.works avatar

No, why would you purposefully buy a less capable, cheaply made vehicle that won’t last, with an anemic engine that has less displacement than a carbonated beverage container?

Rivalarrival ,

Because it’s cheaper, more fuel/energy efficient, I already have a larger, more capable, more durable vehicle with more displacement than my stock pots, and I’d prefer not to incur excessive wear and tear on my nice vehicle when I don’t need its capabilities on the overwhelming majority of my drives. I only need it once or twice a week, but I use it for everything because it’s what I have, and I can’t get something small enough and cheap enough to justify an additional vehicle.

A Kei truck would be perfect. I could save about 90% of the miles I put on my good truck if I had a Japanese mini-truck. It would pay for itself in reduced wear and tear on my good truck in about 4 years. Unfortunately, they aren’t street legal in my state.

    seems like a clear conflict of interest to have a mayor adjudicating

    Salamendacious OP ,
    @Salamendacious@lemmy.world avatar

    I found this telling (emphasis mine):

    Mayor’s courts operate in a gray area of Louisiana law. Like municipal courts, they handle violations of local ordinances. Municipal judges must hold a law degree and pass the bar; a mayor can preside over court without meeting any qualifications. Yet, like a municipal judge, a mayor can impose fines or sentence people to jail.

    Mayor’s courts must ensure defendants have fair trials. But unlike other courts in the state, they aren’t subject to rules like the Code of Criminal Procedure that are supposed to ensure courts are run fairly and properly.

    grue ,
    shalafi ,

    I’d guess it’s because Louisianna law is based on Napoleonic Code rather the English common law. LA law can have oddities because of that.

    And then we got someone below talking about Supreme Court, as if they would here such a case. This is one that would, and should, be deferred to a lower court.

    knobbysideup , in We are living in a disconnected world, when did we start rewarding bad behavior? And when did bad behavior become so commonplace?

    Capitalism rewards psychopaths.

    lps2 ,

    I can assure you this goes back well before capitalism

    flipht ,

    Bad behavior goes back forever, but many cultures dealt with it as a community. A person acting out was seen as a symptom of a group problem.

    Now, with everything hyper individualized, and with capitalism in its metastatic era, it's nearly impossible to hold anyone accountable when they can just flip around and say, "I wanted the money," and a solid 20% of the population will attack anyone who says that shouldn't be the primary driver of our society.

    BigMacHole , in Charlie Kirk defends Elon Musk's antisemitism: "Some of the largest financiers of left-wing anti-white causes have been Jewish Americans"

    I know Republicans are LITERALLY blaming Jews for everything bad in the world but remember Republicans are definitely totally not Nazis! They also refuse to condemn any form of Nazi behavior but they are NOT NOT Nazis! They also literally elect KKK members but are LEGIT not Nazis! They also wine and dine with proudly self proclaimed Nazis like Nick Fuentes but trust me they AREN’T actually Nazis! They also made it illegal to teach Hitler was ONLY bad but Republicans are not Nazis!
