PM_Your_Nudes_Please , in Gay couple from Toronto wins lawsuit in Italy after son's birth photo used in anti-surrogacy campaign

So the right wing party was ordered to pay £20k total, (£10k to each father,) and hasn’t even paid yet because it’s still tied up in appeals court.

Sounds like they got to run a political ad campaign for only £20k, which is incredibly cheap once you consider all the parts that go into developing and running a campaign.

On the one hand, it’s great that the fathers have won. But on the other, it’s horrible that the penalty was so low. When you get into politics, £20k is a drop in the bucket.

Potatos_are_not_friends , in Hawaii has a robust emergency siren warning system. It sat silent during the deadly wildfires | CNN

Conspiracy theory here. Please note the high level of conspiracy-ness of this.

Hawaii is pretty isolated from the rest of the mainland. Getting things to Hawaii is pretty difficult. Getting business in Hawaii is pretty difficult without a lot of handshakes.

A lot of businesses were burned. Local Hawaiian businesses. Hawaiian corporations. The Hawaiian Old Guard. A robust fire system suddenly not working?

If we see a bunch of multinationals move in to help repair, and “stay a bit longer”, then I’m going to call it a takeover.

It’s not like this type of action doesn’t have historical roots either.

webadict ,

I have a buddy who helps out with fires on another island. Their department asked if help was needed during the fires and was denied multiple times. My buddy says it was probably bad training, which seems to fit with a lot of the story. Lots of disasters happen because of bad training.

BeautifulMind , in EU blindsided by ‘spectacular’ solar rollout
@BeautifulMind@lemmy.world avatar

Once you’ve got a critical mass of productivity online, it’s time for utilities to get out of the business of burning hydrocarbons and selling steady-state electricity- and into the business of capturing daytime surpluses, selling it back to the grid at night

The point, of course, is that there’s never been a shortage of energy- only scarcity of readily-available stored power at a given place or time, sometimes

girsaysdoom ,

The excuse always has been that there isn’t one energy storage solution that takes up minimal space, has the same efficiency, requires little maintenance, doesn’t affect the environment, is cheap, and works everywhere. There are tons of solutions that would work but as soon as one of those prerequisites are lacking, the solution is deemed inadequate and we’re back to the slow sacrifice of the environment. Anything short of perfection isn’t enough to be convincing.

CADmonkey ,

Perfection once again being the enemy of improvement.

VioletRing , in Democrats aren’t the only ones voting for abortion rights, Ohio shows

Issue one wasn't about abortion, no matter how much people want it to be. Convoluting it with the November abortion rights issue will only give false confidence for the November vote. It's going to be a much tighter vote than what this was. Plenty of people across the political spectrum saw the long reaching implications passing issue one would have and voted it down for being a power grab.

SiegeRhino ,

As an Ohio resident it’s extremely frustrating that every national news outlet is trying to equate the issue 1 vote with abortion rights. Issue 1 would have fundamentally changed how citizens can interact with our constitution by making voter initiatives almost impossible to pass.

Yes, our farcical GOP government went on record saying this issue was in response to the November initiative about abortion rights, but this vote if passed would have made every other future voter initiative all but impossible to pass. It would have consolidated power into the hands of the minority. I’m so thankful people turned out to vote it down.

ArtieShaw ,
@ArtieShaw@kbin.social avatar

Issue 1 would have fundamentally changed how citizens can interact with our constitution by making voter initiatives almost impossible to pass.

Honestly - I think it was about both, but the November ballot initiative was absolutely the catalyst. Why else would lawmakers call an August election (something recently abolished), out of a seemingly new concern about ballot initiatives? A power grab was absolutely the goal, but there's a reason they tried for it now.

reddig33 , in Longterm use of Proton Pump Inhibiters linked to dementia

“A buzzy new study on heartburn meds and dementia doesn’t actually clarify anything”

vox.com/…/dementia-heartburn-proton-pump-inhibito…

“Importantly, the study comes on the heels of several larger, higher-quality studies showing the exact opposite of its conclusions — namely, that these medications do not portend an increased risk of dementia.”

clearedtoland OP ,

The Vox article does a better job of communicating the findings without the hyperbolic headline. The study wasn’t explicitly designed to look for association. Nonetheless, the data is there.

Neither study does a particularly good job determining causality. The higher quality study was limited in time (3 years) and participant age but perhaps the findings also broadly apply.

Fredselfish ,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you for that. I take anti heartburn meds due to acid reflux and glad to hear not going get dementia from it.

Burn_The_Right ,

Sir, this is a Wendy’s.

maporita ,

“If acid reflux is not controlled well, it can cause a variety of complications, including cancer at a later stage,” said Desai. So people should not be ditching their heartburn medications en masse based on alarming headlines.

While that’s true, it’s also apparent that Doctors in the US massively overprescrbe medicines for conditions that are often better addressed through lifestyle changes. Acid reflux is one.

Drusas ,

Unfortunately, acid reflux can't always be resolved with lifestyle changes. But it probably can in most cases.

Every poll specifically about about abortion routinely shows 60%+ in favor of allowing it. You need more than anti abortion to win an election.

Because this was about more than just abortion. The November vote (specifically about abortion) could be an entirely different story.

sylver_dragon ,

Ya, that was my reading of this. It seems like “Issue 1” was a change in the Ohio Constitutional process. Yes, it was absolutely aimed at the potential abortion rights amendment; however, it makes much more sweeping changes and there may be people who were opposed to such changes on their own merit.

FoxBJK ,
@FoxBJK@midwest.social avatar

Precisely! In addition to abortion, Ohioans are working on recreational marijuana which also would’ve needed the insanely high 60% vote, had this issue passed.

astanix ,

It’s funny because the pro issue one people on my Facebook were all either completely focused on abortion or the fact that currently a 50.1% vote (or a single person) determined the outcome of something.

Both just completely disingenuous arguments… but arguments that are successful to a certain group of people.
