FlyingSquid , in Newsom threatens to take money from counties that don't reduce homelessness
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This is fucking insane. He wants them to create housing immediately, as if building things like apartments doesn’t take time.

Bad enough that the camps are being broken up. They literally have nowhere to go but prison. Oh well, at least the private prisons are making their slave quotas.

gAlienLifeform OP ,
@gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

He wants them to create housing immediately, as if building things like apartments doesn’t take time.

He says that occasionally, but that’s not really what he wants, he just wants homeless people gone out of sight and out of the minds of his donors and their customers. If they disappear into housing that’s fine, but he’s ok with other solutions too so long as they happen now now now

Los Angeles County, in particular, has become a frequent target of Newsom’s ire. The governor again criticized the county on Thursday for delaying implementation of a law that expands the criteria for people to be detained against their will.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Absolutely. He’s not an idiot. He knows he’s asking the impossible when he says shit like this.

xmunk ,

Welp, buy them all involuntary bus tickets to South Park then… that’ll solve the issue permanently. /s

@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

When is the cocksucker up for relection. We need to Primary him and remove him from politics at least as a Democrat. He fucking DINO and horrible human being. He should join the GOP because everything he does reminds me of them.

primrosepathspeedrun ,

it would be impolite to say so though. 🤷‍♀️ sorry. can’t listen, you’re rude for accusing someone of doing something only a total piece of shit would do, implying that he’s a total piece of shit. what kind person would even DO that?

maybe we could listen to you if you also said it was fine and good?

APassenger ,

Especially if it doesn’t hurt his electabity. I think he’s quite ambitious and that motivates him.

Besides, what does a career politician do after governorship?

Corporate boards?

bluGill ,

Apartments take a few months to build. There are standard designs they build over an over again in different locations. I realize CA has earthquakes and maybe cannot take a design from Ohio (though I wouldn't be surprised if they could), but there should be plenty of designs that meet codes. If they cannot build thousands of apartments in a year the problem isn't the time it is they are doing something to make it not possible to build that fast.

Building should be by right - no need to ask the neighbors for permission or get a review (for a standard design that doesn't do anything unusual), just half hour to get the permit and then a few routine inspections along the way.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You read what he’s saying in the article, because the implication is pretty clear that he’s saying, “you house these people right now or else” as if that’s possible.

bluGill ,

He has been threatening for a while now. If they haven't made significant progress it is because they are not trying to.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

If they haven’t made significant progress it is because they are not trying to.

Bullshit. They have to deal with a bunch of NIMBYism.

bluGill ,

They refers to the people of the county in question - which is where those NIMBYs live and thus those who are not trying.

corsicanguppy ,

Wow. My building was finished 6 months ago after a 3-year process.

I envy your comparatively-overnight build. Pouring the foundation (parking) alone is a month for 5 storeys for the new one going in next door, and then concrete for each level is at least another fortnight. That’s like a year alone just for the concrete skeleton, let alone the infrastructure and then build of the units.

disguy_ovahea ,

Forced prison labor is determined by state, not by ownership. There are Federal prisons in many states that use slave labor, socialized by our tax money.

Your point still stands though.

primrosepathspeedrun ,

and isn’t that what’s really important?

seriously, we need a lot more fire fighters.

kameecoding , in FTC head wants investigation into grocery stores over inflated prices

does this need investigation? a spike in profit should be rather obvious, if not the spike than increased income and some new mysterious expenses.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes it does. Because they need ironclad proof if they’re going to take legal action.

ComradePorkRoll ,

I love that we need ironclad proof to decide whether or not it’s okay for people to be able to afford sustenance or not. If there’s no proof then, oh well! The poors will just have to make do.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s how legal cases work. You have to prove your side. I’m not sure how else they should work.

ComradePorkRoll ,

I’m aware that’s how they work but when the system “works” and the result is starving families then maybe it’s time we rethink whether we should keep following this system, no?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

So how should it work? What system could not be abused by, for example, a Trump administration?

lolcatnip ,

The problem is but just one system, but a set of interlocking bad systems. For instance, there would have been no Trump administration without the Electoral College and plurality voting. I didn’t think any system can be made to work right when we allow bad people to be put in charge.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That doesn’t really answer my question of how it should work.

skyspydude1 ,

Would you prefer the FTC just forces them to cut prices, and then give both the corporations reason to sue them, as well as more right-wing talking points about “big government stealing money from Ma and Pa grocer”? The unfortunate reality is that if the FTC don’t do this investigation and come back with hard proof, no matter how blatantly obvious what the large grocers are doing actually is, they will play the victim and make it even harder to take any hard action against them.

The other reality is that, even if it’s not actually the case, if it turned out that it was just “inflation” and all those companies did have to raise prices to stay afloat (again, not saying this is the case at all, just simply playing devil’s advocate), the FTC would face an absolute shitstorm if they took action and it did actually do serious harm to grocers/the broader food supply chain. Again, not a “Oh no, profits were only up 20% YoY instead of 35% because of the FTC action” but a “We will literally be selling all our products at a severe loss and will be bankrupt in weeks”. They have to understand exactly how much they’re fucking people over to take action, because historically there have been plenty of times where a well-intentioned “Stop fucking people over” rule, has caused much greater consequences down the line.

It sucks and is disgusting that in such a wealthy nation that we have people going hungry at all, but at least they’re attempting to finally do something about this specific issue, and hopefully will at least discourage shit like this in the future.

Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

Yes, if there’s collusion or a lack of competition, there are legal solutions, namely breaking up the offending companies.

lolcatnip ,

But will those solutions be applied? That’s always in doubt.

Cornelius_Wangenheim , (edited )

Who knows, but Khan is the best chance we’ve had of something getting done in a very long time.

skuzz ,

We’re at an inflection point where Federal government arms actually have to show the citizens they sometimes work. Something may actually happen here. Many government agencies like them, the FCC, DOE, DOT, and FTC are actually being run by people that are trying to make a difference. Did a 4000 mile road trip across the US over the holidays and was impressed to see so many bridges actually being fixed, rebuilt, or replaced. First time I’ve ever seen that level of progress. (Or at least, level of undoing technical debt.)

Not to fill you with false optimism though. I’ve not seen our federal government do anything useful my entire life, only take away rights with things like the Patriot Act and making women not be people anymore, so I have a hard time myself believing they will actually do something for the People.

Opposite corollary: They antitrusted Google over search while Google is currently being run by morons and failing at everything, meanwhile ignoring that Apple is becoming an actual monopoly in the US and segregating the population based on the color of a text bubble; owning media production, distribution, and sales; and other bad behavior.

Ensign_Crab ,

Bookmeat , in Horses Can Plan And Strategize, New Study Finds

I don’t get it. If you can traverse obstacles you can plan and strategize. Why is this news?

TheDemonBuer , in For these voters, Tim Walz is a reminder of their dad - before they were lost to partisan division
@TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world avatar

I think Tim Walz is very important, because he shows that “regular,” working class, middle aged men don’t HAVE to be conservative. We don’t have to believe in baseless conspiracy theories, we don’t have to reject scientific evidence, we don’t have to divorce ourselves from reality. We don’t have to believe that vaccines are evil, that climate change is a hoax, or that the 2020 election was stolen. Maybe we don’t agree with everything the liberals say and do, but that doesn’t mean we have to go full ding dong and start listening to Joe Rogan and Ben Shapiro. There are other options and Tim Walz is representative of at least one of those alternatives.

WoahWoah ,

Not to mention that he shows that you can be both masculine AND change your mind about things. Even letting your children change your mind. Shocking!

vividspecter ,

And being masculine while openly giving support to the less fortunate. Contrasting with the might-makes-right view that these alt-right “masculine” types subscribe to.

TheDemonBuer ,
@TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a really important point. For some reason, many men think it’s somehow a sign of weakness to be wrong about something, or to admit that someone knows more about something than you do. I think you look weak if you refuse to admit when you’re wrong and double down on some ignorant position out of stubbornness.

pineapplelover ,

The fact that so many blue collar people are conservative when they could just as easily be liberals amazes me. Democrats are the ones who want unions, better environment, better labor rights, better working conditions, but somehow the conservatives are really good at lying and making propaganda.

prole ,

“Some reason”

It’s called a lack of scruples, and no conscience.

One party is actually somewhat beholden to the values it espouses, so they can’t do the kind of shit the right does without losing support.

psvrh ,
@psvrh@lemmy.ca avatar

A large part of the issue is that the Democratic Party (and Labour in the UK, and the Liberals in Canada) really drank the third-way neoliberal koolaid in the 1990s and have done a poor job of speaking to the anxieties and concerns of the poor.

The political right has talked to those anxieties, albeit in a dishonest, manipulative and disingenuous way, but they do talk to it and–not only do they talk to it, they deliver results. Again, dishonest, manipulative and self-serving results, but if you don’t look to closely it looks like they’re taking action.

I’m hoping Harris and Walz mark a new era, but after witnessing Trudeau in Canada and Starmer in the UK continuing to make the mistakes of the 1990s, I’m not holding my breath.

pineapplelover ,

I have such high hope for Walz. He’s so tight with the labor party. If harris and walz wins this election I’ll be so happy.

hesusingthespiritbomb , in Nancy Pelosi continues to exercise ultimate power over Democrats

I actually have more respect for Pelosi after this.

She willingly stepped down in 2022. Her first reaction was to refuse to comment, and not exert pressure. She seemed to genuinely want either Joe Biden to come to the conclusion that he can’t run on his own and/or Hakeem Jefferies to lead the charge to have him step down.

It was only after Jefferies proved himself pretty much useless that she inserted herself back into the primary role. She proceeded to prove that, despite everything ,she’s incredibly capable in a way that no other democrat can match.

Regardless of how the election turns out, I think we can all agree that Biden was a massive liability for Democrats. While I have personal issues in regards to the Harris/Walz ticket, most Americans seem infinitely more amicable to it than Biden/Harris. None of that would have been possible without Pelosi.
