There’s something I don’t understand that maybe other unicycle riders can explain to me. I can ride a unicycle and I can even juggle while riding one, but I cannot go more than 200 feet or so before my thighs completely burn out and I fall over. How do people use these things as actual forms of transportation?
You have one apple. You divide it into quarters, so that you have 0.25 of an apple. Now divide it in half. So yes well technically you do have one half of 0.25 (and 0.5 is the answer that a calculator will return) what you actually have is 1/8 of an apple (0.125).

Your confusion comes from the fact that dividing a quarter in half is 0.25/2. That’s not what’s shown in the comic. Dividing by 0.5 is the same as multiplying by 2. It’s just a quirk of syntax, the way we write math. If you spelled it out using English the comic would say “multiplying a quarter by two equals a half”. The confusion just stems from someone’s unfamiliarity with mathematical notation.

Your analogy is really close, but backwards is all. If you have a quarter of an apple. In order to get half a whole apple, you need another quarter. Two quarters make a half, so dividing a quarter by 0.5 gives you 2 quarters. Dividing a quarter by 2 gives you 0.5 of the original quarter which is your 1/8th
The people in the meme are at about Seattle and NYC, which is a little over 3k miles apart (by car). You’d need to be going 250mph for the entire 12 hours to make that distance. A quick google search says that the maximum operating speed of a bullet train is 200mph, but tests have been conducted at 275mph.
So, you’d need to go non-stop at 125% max speed to make the trip in 12 hours. Even if you went at 275mph, realistically you’d make a lot of stops along the way, which is going to make the average speed a lot lower. Trains are great, but the US is really big.
Bonus fact: a non-stop flight from Seattle to NYC takes about 5.5 hours.
Chinese high speed train network operates at 120–240 mph, and their maglev (very short, very expensive, very fast train route from Shanghai airport to the city centre) had the record at 268 mph. Plus, railroad may be slightly shorter due to how it is designed if the road isn’t near straight already.
But yes, 3000 miles is a lot and maybe 12 hours will not be achievable for a long time yet
continuing to have a habitable planet should maybe be worth more to you than saving max. ~10 hours of journey time getting from one side of a continent to another.
Unfortunately, all the electric train startups were bought up and closed down by diesel train companies decades ago, and the majority of the rail lines are owned by freight companies as well. This is partly why public train transit is so bad: the government has to lease the tracks from the freight companies, who get priority on the lines over public trains, meaning that if there’s freight traffic the commuter rail has to wait for the freight lines to go through first.
My thought was that it’s an obscure joke about the two Washingtons in the USA. Like, the state in the north-west corner is called “Washington” and then there’s the capital city of the USA on the east coast, called “Washington, D.C.”.
But Washington, D.C., is further south from where the person is placed, so I’m guessing not…

As someone not subscribed to simpsonsshitposting, I really don’t care if it’s a repost. That community isn’t even on the same instance, so it’s a little like complaining if someone reposts from R*ddit.

TBH, I moved the decimal over 2 places on the numerator and denominator and simplified 25/50 to 1/2 because It is easier to do in my head. Some of the other paths are too complicated when I am going to sleep.
I took a conceal carry course and one of the main reasons they say to do it is safety. If you are open carrying in a store and someone wants to rob it they will either get scared off or take you out first. It’s not worth the risk. That and I would always worry about someone just rushing me and trying to take/use it.
Cops / military open carry because they already have the uniform, and the implications that has (legal use of force, training, and back up). Private citizens are safer if they conceal carry for a number of reasons, here are two:
Privacy. Some people get intimidated and / or think open carry is a political statement. Which it is sometimes, but not usually. If you open carry, it’s better to do in appropriate settings and with groups. Day to day carry, it is better to just blend in with the crowd.
Security/safety. If you open carry you need to be prepared for someone trying to disarm you or shoot you first, because they know where your weapon is, and that you have it. It’s not really worth the deterant value. In conflict it’s better to have the element of surprise rather than be surprised by someone who knows who has a gun, and where they are.
