How can this be an estimation, and how is it so wrong? Doesn’t the program just have a hard-coded length? Or does the time vary based on clothing weight or something? This seems so utterly strange to me.

Shard ,

Seems to be a washing machine. 1600RPM spin dry.

The problem occurs because there are 2 conditions that need to be fulfilled.

  1. Its programmed to spin at set RPM for 6 mins.
  2. Before it can initiate a full speed spin it needs to ensure the drum is balanced. If its off balanced it will damage the spin motor and other parts of the machine in short order. (reference old machines that sound like an earthquake during spin cycles). It will keep attempting to adjust the clothes by start-stopping so clothes can fall in place. Only when the vibrations are down to acceptable levels will the machine initiate a full speed spin dry. Machine will stay stuck at set spin time until condition 2 is fulfilled.

The way to fix this is to open up the machine, untangle balled up clothes and allow the spin dry to resume.

Landless2029 ,

I find you get much more accurate estimates when you don’t overstuff the machine. You’re supposed to keep it 60-70% full to allow for proper agitation. Lots of people top it off.

Cinner Bot ,

If you read the instructions, on mine anyway, it says a full load is to the top of the basket without pressing down on any of the clothes. I always lay them around in a circular pattern to even out the level of clothes as I’m loading it. My fiancee used to shove as much as she could in there, and it would get off balance and wobble and shake the house. It took a lot of convincing but she finally believed me after I kept pointing out that’s probably why it was happening.

Washing machines (mine anyway) wash by spinning back and forth in water with detergent, so if you stuff it full there’s not much room for any clothes to move and they don’t get very clean and will come out smelling like laundry detergent.

Landless2029 ,

Sounds like you have top load and not front load.

I’m referring to front load machines.

camelbeard OP ,

Very good reply, just one thing to add, it’s both a washer and dryer, we did a full wash dry cycle.

red ,

It’s even harder to estimate two separate things accurately. So many variables

Kase ,

Those are a thing? TIL, how cool!

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Even worse… dryers often use a moisture sensor to determine when it is done. Load shifts, sensors gets more moisture, time goes up.

Blackmist ,

I assume it weighs it at the start and knows it’s dry when it weighs the same again.

It doesn’t know what the material is. Some dry quicker than others.

The OED goes very in-depth into etymology in the way other English dictionaries do not. It’s the size of an encyclopedia. This is the print version of the second edition, which has been supplemented several times since:

As far as I know the OED is a very specific dictionary that’s way beyond what most people need and mostly for people dealing with language in their work. www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com would be the more personal variant from what I’ve heard.

Your computer is still using the power and it can damage it

    Thats not how that works.

Sure it could cause some data loss, or corruption, or other software issues if the computer was in the middle of something like applying updates, but it should not cause hardware damage. All this applies to holding the powerbutton as well by the way.

or (really unlikely, on a shit connector) you get shocked.

Then you have bigger problems. You shouldn’t be using a connector that’s a shock or fire hazard in the first place.

But seriously about the only bad thing about it is perhaps some wear and tear on the connector that’s not designed to be plugged in and pulled out every day. Alternatively you could also “pull the power” by pressing a button on your powerstrip (if you have that), or by flipping the powersupply button at the back of the computer to off. It all does the same thing: it cuts the power to the computer instantly.

It’s also more convenient to hold the button instead of having to unplug and re-plug.

Yes, but holding the button is not instant and it relies on a software function in the bios which can be buggy. Usually holding the button doesn’t even complete poweroff the system but puts it in a special “standby” power state where the motherboard still keeps providing power to some components. There are some issues that can only be resolved by a complete poweroff.

The tea thing is weird though. I’m originally from Florida, where iced tea is sweet tea, I was dismayed the first time I ordered iced tea in Minnesota and it was unsweet, and the barista pointed me at sugar packets- no, the sugar won’t dissolve properly in cold tea!

It’s not just shareholders, I mean that’s a huge part why public corporations endlessly seek growth. But, even private corporations are beholden to capitalism’s inherent growth imperative.

The only way to maintain solvency is to grow. Without growth you can’t save, and if you can’t save, you can’t accumulate investment capital. Which basically means your corporation is stuck in stagnation and is being eaten alive by interest rates.

    bigpEE ,

without growth you can’t save What? Why? If I’m making a million dollars profit a year, why can’t I just put it in a bank account or ETFs or whatever every year?

    TranscendentalEmpire ,

A CEO isn’t a salary man… A salary man is just a white collar worker who works for a salary, not hourly. Which is typically taken advantage of by having them work a tremendous amount of unpaid overtime.

Also, salaries are generally the least attractive part of being paid as a CEO. Taking the majority of your compensation as stock options allows you to avoid income tax.

    KeenFlame ,

Then why is their salary extremely insanely out of proportion in a destructive manner orders of magnitude over any sane number?

    TranscendentalEmpire ,

Their total compensation is… But, the vast majority of their compensation packages are made up of stock options and bonuses.

I’m not claiming that they aren’t being paid way too much money, just that when people talk about a salary employee they don’t typically think of the CEO.

    Olgratin_Magmatoe ,

Because enshitifying their service would earn them short term profits, which is the only thing corps/shareholders care about.

Why? Because the enshittification is based on short sighted greed over long sighted sustainable income.

The only reason I even have crypto is so I can donate to the private torrent sites I am on.

Crypto isn’t outright evil, but you really should only use it if you have things to use it for, and aren’t trying to game the system to get rich quick.

    SnotFlickerman ,
    @SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Agreed, which is why I labelled it a “problem.” I go gambling very rarely, but sometimes I do when I have a spare $80 that I don’t mind pissing away. But once that $80 is gone, I’m done, and I stop. I also stop when I’ve made at least 200% profit (I’ve very rarely made it that high). It’s a good point to stop if you want to do well the few times you do win.

Gambling isn’t the problem as much as the addiction to it and an industry which purposefully makes it more addictive.
