Eh, they could still do the scummy shit Apple and Google were doing to each other with SMS. Start encoding “extra features” in the standard messages and pushing that garbage out to the rest of the network. Or hit it with a 51% attack and scramble everything that can’t defederate fast enough. Still problematic.
I think that 51% of the fediverese even for Google is too complicated, even if he gets such a large instance, it’s in the fediverse only one more and it can easy be blocked and excludet by any other instance (several thousend), as it also ocurres with some Nazi instances (Gab and others). Although some instances are small, chow does Google intend to control the instance that a guy has created for him and his friends on his own server? it is in the nature of this decentralized system, self-hosted in private servers, that it cannot be controlled as a whole by a single entity, as is done in traditional monolithic social networks, such as Reddit, X, Meta, . …it’s like trying to eat a broth with a fork- There are already many instances created by corporations, companies, official and gov sites, NASA, ESA, informations media and journalists in the fediverse, coming from all over the world and all hosted on their own servers. It only stands to reason that they’re going to tell Google to hell if it try to take control of them. Google has a lot of servers, but can only control these, but not others.
I’m not betting on the 51%, but it’s still on the table. I’m more convinced they’ll start throwing garbage over the protocol and uninformed users will migrate to instances that support that garbage because of peer pressure, features, or just wanting to get rid of the encoded messages. It’ll turn into the green chat bubble argument with some people feeling their instance is superior in the way it deals with it.
If anyone wants to grasp the basics: here is some fun reading (leading on to some beautiful math). Changing the idea of parallelity leads to hyperbolic geometry and other fun stuff. :)
Please correct my layman understanding if I’m wring here. But isn’t everything traveling in a straight line until an external force is applied. For example the earth orbiting the sun is traveling in a straight line in a curved apacetime. Also if you jump, the moment you leave the ground until you touch it again coming back down you were traveling in a straight line.
What they are getting at is that gravity is not a force so much as your mass trying to travel in a straight line through curved spacetime. The weight you feel is because the surface of the earth is in your way.
Get into low earth orbit and that straight path has you going in apparent circles around the planet. You are very much within the earth’s gravity but you don’t feel “weight” because the surface of the earth is no longer blocking your path. You still have mass and inertia and all that, of course.
Also if you jump, the moment you leave the ground until you touch it again coming back down you were traveling in a straight line.
relative to the body of earth, including its rotation it would be an arc path, and including it’s tilt it would be 3d, if we also include the travel around the sun in orbit, that elongates it around the orbit, so uh.
Not true, as when space bends, it bends the rulers and compasses too. We experience no spatial distortion.
A person traveling near the speed of light doesn’t feel like time is slower for them (but it is and we can measure it)
The principle is equivalent.
That said, it’s not a straight line in any topology standard I am aware of.
Sure you could CREATE a topology framework where this would be considered a straight line, but there is no real world model that could come even close without so much mass being concentrated in static relative areas, and EVEN THEN it would only be straight for a predetermined instant before the mass deforming spacetime began interacting with each other.
That’s the problem with spacetime deformations, almost no layman takes into account the ridiculous amounts of static mass to make those strange topologies.
I remember Phil Wizard, who won gold in the men’s competition. And Danny Dan who won silver, Victor who won bronze, and Shigekix who lost the bronze match.
I can’t seem to find the men’s finals on YouTube but if you can find it I highly recommend it. It was awesome. I really hope Breaking returns in 2032, the level of sportsmanship and joy the competitors showed was amazing.
By this argument I could join a tennis tournament and take a shit on the court and punch the judge and you’d think that makes me a star player because people that don’t follow tennis heard of me.
Why do you feel like your opinion is worth sharing when it wouldn’t have even left your brain if you gave it any thought?
By this argument I could join a tennis tournament and take a shit on the court and punch the judge and you’d think that makes me a star player because people that don’t follow tennis heard of me.
Where did I say I thought they were a star? I just said they’re the only one I remember. If you shat on a tennis court in front of (hundreds of?) millions of people during a global broadcast event I reckon I’d remember you too.
I’m running Fedora 40 Atomic Budgie on a little micro desktop for fun right now. IMO, it’s not quite ready for prime time just yet. I do appreciate the simple ability to roll back at boot if something does go wrong. I’ve done it once after an update and it was nice. The next day a new update was pushed to fix the error in the update and on I went on my merry way.
On the other hand, there is a general sluggishness and a feeling of malaise to the system as time goes on. It’s not a show stopper. But it does not spark joy either. Budgie ran a whole lot faster and smoother as a “standard” install. And I’m not installing a lot of extra software and they are all installed as Flatpaks or I have 3 pieces installed as appImages. So it’s all just updates.
The real test will come when Fedora shifts from 40 to 41 and I upgrade the distro. Will it be as “immutable” as they brag about.
Pfff the distro itself isn’t affected by the drama really. The community is. However in a few years nobody will remember really. Maybe the forks are still around then.
Yeah but the anti-woke type are hardly ever too mentally stable, so who knows when the ‘saving our Christian distro from the sinners’ update will drop.
That or the old devs never come back and the new ones ride it right into the shitter, either way its definitely uncertain times when you lose most of your main devs
Look up “thebootydiaries tumblr sweaty” and give the images that come up a brief scroll. I’m not very creative so I’m just gonna tell you that we can do this all day.
(edit: I’ve realized you probably already know about this and I’m the one missing the joke but i saw a brief opportunity to contribute and took it so I’m not taking it down.)
