Yea, this is a good comparison. A washed up, talentless, lying, cheating, stealing, has-been hack of a clown, or a pretty cool old guy that’s been around the world, has cool stories to tell, loads of wisdom but falls asleep every now and then… like the clown does at court.
Some years ago I were in US on vacation and a Cadillac commercial said you shouldn’t buy cars made by lazy people wo have 4 weeks vacation every year, instead you should buy an American car.
Most Americans have no clue what the rest of the world is like.
Most Americans don’t even understand the progressive income tax system we have, they will go so far as to decline raises because it’ll put them in a higher bracket and they think that will mean less take home pay. It doesn’t! You should always take a raise!
I believe I’ll someday move to a country that has good policies for everything from healthcare, to work life balance, and social safety nets, and I’ll never have to deal with the American nightmare again.
There’s actually a tricky spot for folks who get certain social services which are tied to income. A small raise can bump you out of eligibility for things like medicaid and food stamps, and thus can in fact result in higher expenses, less money in your pocket, and a lower quality of life.
The way the parties nominate candidates for president is an absolute mess, but the nominations aren’t official until the parties hold a closed convention with delegates who vote for candidates to be the nominee. Back in the day these delegates used to actually be the people who decided who got nominated. These days they’re more like a ceremonial role, with a lot of them (I think) being required to vote in line with the way people voted in their state’s primary.
Anyway, I’d have to look it up to be 100% sure, but I’m pretty sure enough delegates have some kind of autonomy that it’s possible they could nominate someone other than Biden. Who they would end up agreeing on…? Heck if I know.
Yeah. Supreme court ruled that political parties post-2016 are private clubs that can do whatever the fuck they want (Supreme Courts ruling on DNC’s ratfucking of Bernie).
Afaict from DNC rules , Biden needs to release his delegates for the first rounds of voting; from there it would proceed like any convention prior to 1976.
Honestly, it would be a great thing for the Democrats to do this. All of a sudden people would really fucking care about the election.
I doubt Bernie himself will but technically it’s not too late. The Democratic national convention hasn’t happened yet and after the debate there’s been a renewed push to pick someone else
Our Democrats would never let him win, and that’s before you even get to the Republicans. Republican heads might actually explode if we elected a progressive who dared to call themselves a Democratic Socialist.
Meanwhile, Democrats are also crushed under the thumb of all the money big business pours into bribery lobbying, and they have already made it clear twice that they won’t let him get on the ballot.
We’ll never get progressive policies or a progressive president unless the progressives infiltrate D to the extent maga has infiltrated R.
Nuclear lobby really tries to sell us to the fact, that it’s better to have control over power by a few big players. Must be terrifying to think about people creating their own power eventually.
Who says it needs to be controlled by a few big players?
I mean, obviously we never would, but there could absolutely be a right way to do this. Nationalization could be a solution. Or something like co-determination.
I’m from Europe (Hungary) and I watched the first 20 minutes of the debate (with the intent of finishing the whole thing in one go) before turning it off while basically being on the brink of crying. The US presidents basically have as much say in my life as my own government (if not more) and even though I can’t vote for them, if I had to I’d be lost. Because it’s not that one is old and the other is crazy it’s a freaking Venn diagram of crazy RFK jr., demented Biden and then of course crazy and demented Trump. Seeing the debate and how these people basically can’t put two sentences after each other without breaking up is terrifying. And one of them will be voted into the most important office on the planet.
I mean it’s shit over here. We can choose between a guy who already stole half of our country, someone whose messy divorce somehow made him the most important member of the opposition and this other guy who stole the other half of the country before the current dude did. (And that’s just the tip of the iceberg). But maaan are we a lot better off than the world’s greatest country where two unsupervised parties get to point at the people you can vote into this ridiculously powerful position. And then they pick these guys.
We’re all going to die and I can’t even vote for whoever gets us killed, which is ultimately for the better. This way I can die with a clear conscience.
