I only use half of each drive for its stated purpose. Then I backup onto a different drive in case of hardware failure. (This obviously does not protect against fire or theft.) Not exactly what you asked, but I’d already started copy/pasting…
I dont even want to think about how many partitions there are on my PC. windows has 4 or 5 just existing, then there’s root, home and swap plus 2 more for the 2 other drives. So… 9 or 10? its been a while since I had a reason to care.
As for what you should do, if you are replacing windows, it wont really matter what the format on the windows part is because youre going to need to back up the save data and reinstall those games eventually anyway. You cant really run the same game installs on both OSes.
I’ve used nextcloud with a dedicated folder before. Steamdeck and miyoo mini works with it well. That or good old fashioned sd card, look for .sav then push all into another drive.
I am in a similar situation, I use quest 2 a lot to drive in assetto corsa. I have a Thrustmaster TS 300 PC, I don’t think there are any Linux drivers for that base.
Oversteer should be what you need. Just take note that you need an extra driver module for the T300RS.
Edit, if you meant the TS-PC you may be out of luck. It looks like support for the TS-PC has an open request in the T300RS driver but it isn’t implemented yet.
Nice! Is there a kit you’re buying or are you sourcing parts from Aliexpress or similar? If you’re interested there is a guy doing open source pedal sets and shifter which I’m thinking of building as next project. www.youtube.com/
I just went through this exercise myself. 7800x3d with a 7900xt and Asus x670e-e mobi. My only recommendation is to make sure you pick a distro with newish hardware support. I started on Mint but had a lot of hardware troubles (mostly audio related) even with their newest kernel. Switched to Manjaro and the hardware issues were all resolved by the newer kernel and alsalib packages. Wasn’t crazy about their package manager though so I ended up on Tumbleweed and it’s smooth sailing so far.
I see no issues with your plan otherwise. The only caution I’d give is if you plan to get a beefier GPU later you’ll also need to upgrade the power supply, but looks fine with the parts you’ve picked.
If noise matters, you could probably find a quieter power supply. That Cooler Master looks mediocre in that department. Test results are available here:
Windows 8 really was one of the worst in recent history. I’d personally put Win11 as second-worst since Vista. Sure it worked well enough, but so intrusive to both your workflow and privacy. I had trouble with my last attempt to switch to Linux for gaming, but I think it’s time to try again.
Yeah windows 8 was terrible. Windows 11 was not that bad, enjoyed it a bit, except that nagging feeling I am being mined for data. But what killed it for me is the instabilities, my PC stuttered and froze like crazy, and all they say is do a clean install. So I clean installed, Mint that is
I see windows being used by managers at work and I’m soo happy I invested time in Linux so I can run it on my daily machines. It’s something that pays off every single day.
Also on Mint, only real issue I’ve encountered was trying to get my old gaming mouse working… What a cold med fueled rabbit hole that was while home from work for a few days. I think I understand the issue now, which is there is nothing written into the distro itself to support more than a 3 button mouse, so I would need to write in custom USB inputs after mapping them from the device. Wanted it bad enough at the time to actually go and see if input detection was able to see the extra mouse buttons, and it could, so I finally launched a game and tried rebinding to buttons to test it, and it just worked… I think I rebuilt from a snapshot about 4-5 times in the whole process trying to make sure I hadn’t messed up something else up while trying suggested fix after suggested fix, and remembering I had issues with the initial setup of the mouse software on windows thanks to .NET Framework 3.5. I don’t need extra mouse buttons for my DE badly enough to go through the whole process of custom inputs if it works the way I need it to in game, but it’s nice to know I have a “rainy day” project if I need one.
i usually have one window open in the background and alt+tab into that, or if not, i hit windows key and it lets me type in the menu and i can launch another program from there. alternatively you can press win+d and it’ll throw the game out of sight. wondering if alt+esc would defocus the game, am not near my pc so i can’t test that yet. or how about swapping desktops?
