donut4ever ,

Does that mean all these rich people have just numbers and there aren’t actual currency that can cover all of it. Let’s say every billionaire wanted to cash out, would there be this much cash in the system at all?

juliebean ,

correct. the latest numbers from the federal reserves estimates the total value of all physical US currency in circulation at about $2.3 trillion. meanwhile, this analysis of data from forbes puts the combined wealth of US billionaires at about $4.2 trillion as of April 2021, and that number has almost certainly risen since then. billionaires don’t run on cash, they run on manipulating numbers in computer systems, and most of their wealth is in the forms of stocks and such, rather than money in a bank account anyways.

@Obi@sopuli.xyz avatar

Shhhh they’ll hear you.

Really though, defederation is the reason why.

superkret ,

Can you explain why that makes a difference?

Obi ,
@Obi@sopuli.xyz avatar

Instance owners can have full control over who they federate with. From the start, the mainstream in the Fediverse has had a tolerant, open-minded and positive mindset. Over time instances that don’t follow this (e.g. by promoting hate speech) are defederated, leaving mostly decent discourse. Users that try to join instances that follows the Fediverse ethics while not belonging, and try to spread hate, get banned.

We’re still in early days but this will keep happening until the verse is wide and large, and you can choose your own little corner that aligns with what you want, whether that’s more like what we have today, or the opposite end of the spectrum, but for now we get to enjoy to still have mostly only tolerant instances, and the nasty ones are defederated into oblivion.

tbh, I can’t tell the difference.

ImplyingImplications ,

Catapult = energy comes from tension. Trebuchet = energy comes from gravity pulling on a counterweight

You can only build up so much tension in ropes and wood so the weight of what can be thrown is limited. With a trebuchet you can throw heavier objects by increasing the weight of the counterweight and length of the throwing arm

HeckGazer ,

These are both examples of catapults, broadly, siege engines that use stored energy to make big projectile go over there real good.

What people tend to refer to when they say “catapult” is a mangonel or onager, and go on to imply that the trebuchet is not a catapult. It is a catapult, just a different kind. Much like we have cars, which are vehicles, but we also have trucks, which are also vehicles.

anyway this meme implies that you slyly try to convince them that their guess is wrong and plant doubt in their mind so that the movie's twist will still hold up. i still agree gaslighting isn't the proper word to use.

onichama ,

Several subs that I frequented are gone. The biggest pain to me is probably caused by the loss of Transcribers for Reddit. The group behind it basically disbanded at the end of june.

NotSpez OP ,

Yeah so there is still a lot of activity. However, >2000 subs are still dark, 18 others have gone full john oliver and many more are less moderated than before. BotDefense are leaving. So it’s definitely not that nothing out of the ordinary is going on, although I think that is exactly experience that reddit as a company tries to give you when you visit the site.

Eitherway, I am a lemming now and very happy to be here and not there.

BallsInTheShredder ,

Exactly! Last I checked, sure there was a lot of activity BUT as you said, many subs are still dark. The major subs that reopened with new moderation have definitely had a major dip (imo) in quality. I was still seeing John Oliver everywhere. They did use quite a few users, maybe not enough for them to flinch too hard but, how active were those users? I consider my old account there a “power comment account” I rarely posted but was extremely active in the threads, spending hours each day replying to comments of my inbox, so much so that I rarely even viewed actual content. Makes me wonder, how many accounts like mine did they lose? Many just lurked. The comment sections were fueled by active commenters and imo it wouldn’t take losing too many like me for the threads to take a noticeable hit.

Anyway I don’t care much about how it is over there rn, just glad I have this place so I don’t have to support that platform in any way. Plus now that I’ve found a cool app, jerboa or whatever it’s quite enjoyable! Connect and liftoff are also great but my phone doesn’t play well with many apps.

Genericusername ,

Yup. Just like Spez predicted. The site is maybe less popular, but it will survive. The protests will die off eventually. The Reddit clones will never be as popular and active as Reddit once was. Maybe eventually the investers and advertisers will return, and it will be seen in hindsight as a smart move. The quality of the content may take a drop, but it was a calculated risk of making it more profitable.

SolanumChillEse , in Shout-out to that vocal corner of Lemmy

When was the last time China invaded anyone? Including China here is a baseless equivocation and basically yellow scare nonsense.

RexRegum ,
  1. Yellow scare sounds like a very racist term
  2. Nukes
SolanumChillEse ,

It is a term used to describe racists, yes. Which the vast majority of China fear-mongering is deeply rooted in.

Nukes are the reason they’re the same? India, Israel, North Korea, and Pakistan also have nukes.

RexRegum ,

Let’s use racism to describe racists? Seems reasonable

I knew you’d use the “other countries have nukes too” statement. Well, other countries aren’t as hostile as China is, except North Korea, but are you going to tell me it doesn’t get the China treatment? Lol. Israel is basically an extension of NATO at this point, Pakistan isn’t viewed favourably at all and India isn’t particularly hostile

Anamana ,

Why do you feel the need to defend China? They could have put any powerful country in there really, but there aren’t many left when you have NATO and Russia already

Prandom_returns ,
  1. China is a superpower, nuke-holder
  2. China failed and still fails to condemn russia’s actions and still see russia as their partner.
  3. Communist countries stick together
  4. China is the only superpower not involved with the current war that remains aggressive towards NATO/US
  5. China has now completely took over Hong-Kong
  6. And they’re openly planning to do the same with Taiwan.

All these 6 combined is why china is worthy being next to russia in this meme.

boredtortoise OP ,

Hey hey let’s not call China communist

Anamana ,

Let’s not call Russia communist either lol. People who think that communism is still a threat in '23 are stuck in their cold war dystopianism.

Prandom_returns ,

You mean china that is lead by the communist party of china?

boredtortoise OP ,

Good marketing, like “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”

And both in practice something totally else

Prandom_returns ,

Can you name a communist country that is radically different than china?

Because I can name 20 different democratic countries that are radically different than north korea, in turn not changing the meaning of “democracy”.

An outlier doesn’t mean the word changed its meaning.

boredtortoise OP ,

It’s more like it’s impossible to name how China could be communist. They’d need a revolution or something

I’d bet it’s not the first on the list to have it’s people take power

Prandom_returns ,

I’m saying that china + soviet union has defined and continue to define what communism is. It’s a word that’s tainted forever.

Just like, for example, Christianity is defined by modern Christians.

MetaCubed ,

They define the cultural idea of communism

I hate being “that guy” tm but

The Soviet Union only briefly played with the idea of communism before committing to a single party socialist Republic. Modern day Russia is an autocratic dictatorship hiding in a Trenchcoat with “democracy” written on it.

China is again, a one party state which is, in truth, a Republic. China’s historical dances with “communism” are rather similar to that of the USSR wherein an offshoot of marxist-leninism was implemented, modified and then used, ultimately landing closer… Again to a socialist Republic and now being effectively an autocratic dictatorship hiding in a Trenchcoat… Etc. Etc.

Neither country in my opinion ever reached the illusory “true communism”. Maybe the west is right and it’s a failed ideology, maybe “it just hasn’t had the right leader yet” but ultimately, I believe most political ideologies have good bits that we can take notes on to improve the lives of others.

I apologize for any historical or political inaccuracies, wrote this with knowledge from the best of my memory while on the toilet at work

Prandom_returns ,

Some good info in here.

From what you’ve said, it looks like communism has a historical tendency to become an authoritarian dictatorship, in turn redefining what ‘communism’ means to most people?

draneceusrex ,

I think authoritarian states typically get mislabeled very easily within modern times, especially by themselves. Some precedent I believe should exist for what I would loosely call “Stalinist” Communism, as that is what has been the most historical application of the term. But the modern Chinese state I believe would make Mao, Lenin, and even Stalin roll around in their graves by being considered Communist, and we should call a spade a spade. China is a fascist country now.

The difference is that this is an open source community driven effort. Reddit is a for profit business. On that basis, I give Lemmy a lot more leeway when it comes to bugs. Reddit just turned into a slog over the last few years BECAUSE they try to monetize it to death.

CliveRosfield , in titan times at r*ddit

I’m just glad some mods are smart enough now to realize that putting subs in nsfw mode is the way to go. The subreddit shutdown, John Oliver spam, etc, really didn’t accomplish anything. Like, why would Reddit admins even care you’re spamming John Oliver? You’re still getting them ad revenue.

b3nsn0w ,
@b3nsn0w@pricefield.org avatar

apparently reddit has been cracking down hard on that measure, and lately they even unilaterally set every sub back to sfw, after threatening moderators with vague consequences if they start posting or approving nsfw to justify the label
