There is the famous tank man video but he comes to no harm. So I don’t know where people get these ideas from. Genuinely curious.

That’s a fairly weak counterpoint. It seems really meaningless who died or didn’t, the state crushed protests. A lot of ml assertion about the west is accurate but then to turn around to be blindly nationalist. Additionally, Mao was not a good leader. He likely was fairly correct in his goals, but a failure in methodology and leadership. Largely because of nationalism and the state.
What are you even responding to? I didn’t say anything about Mao, who died vs surviving, or what people think about the West. I wasn’t even making a counterpoint, I was indulging someone’s genuine curiosity.
A column of students, retreating from Tiananmen Square by a circular route, crossed the main avenue there at the exact moment that a column of tanks headed west. They scattered, but the last line of students - at least ten of them - were caught against the railings and crushed. Unlike many other killings, it was probably a real accident - if one accepts the grotesque logic that armoured vehicles had the right of way.
Not denying it happened, but I couldn’t find any images of such. Although it won’t do much to change the minds of some people, linking or embedding the actual image would make your statement much stronger :)
Someone already produced the “crushed bicycle” picture here with a couple crushed/mutilated bodies. It’s not the only one, but it strikes a chord of being the least NSFL while still proving the event.

No. how could I? Armored tanks are EXCLUSIVELY implements of peace, they are NEVER used lethally or to inflict harm. The Chinese military DEFINITELY brought in armored tanks for peaceful, humanitarian reasons.

The pictures of dead, maimed, mutilated civilian corpses and crushed bicycles/cars were actually staged by the protesters to frame the kind, peaceful Chinese military, who were only there to have friendly dialogue with the protestors.
As we all know, militaries NEVER use tanks to kill or injure people. They actually mostly use them to transport puppies and kittens, and the army’s very best huggers to spread love and joy :)
Exactly, because there were no civilians maimed or killed ;) Heck, tanks literally CAN’T maim or kill people, that’s not what they’re made for. Militaries exclusively bring in tanks to help spread love and peace and good vibes.
Actually, if you’ve seen the pictures of the military armed with rifles marching around the city that day, did you know that those were just the kind with the flag that pops out and says ‘BANG!’? Haha they were just trying to give everybody a good laugh to ease the tension. And it WORKED and NO ONE GOT HURT!

Considering holocaust denial requires whole cloth fabrication of evidence and whatever people are doing itt just requires a more detailed reading of the primary sources I’d hold off on equating the two.

If you can’t convince them with the mountains of clear and simple evidence, you can’t convince Holocaust Deniers, Flat Earthers, or Tienanmen Square deniers with any evidence no matter how disgusting.

Right? There’s nothing you defend, these major corporations and billionaires are literally ruining everything and offering no benefit. Most of the best stuff that happens is from publicly funded research or volunteer work.
Some have, my own father has read it multiple times and is as conservative Christian authoritarian as they come.
The real problem is they have this issue where instead of actually reading it as one would any other book, they lightly skim the words of the text while using the book as a channeling device to try and achieve some greater meaning/interpretation of the text given to them mentally by God. Reading it for what it says isn’t good enough, it’s not even the true purpose. They genuinely believe that it’s meant to be “understood” on a higher plane of thought than just READING THE DAMN WORDS.
Which is fucking hilarious if you know church history, the protestant faith is literally based on the idea that reading the text is good enough and you don’t need any human to explain it to you, you don’t need some esoteric understanding of the text that you can only gain through additional seminary/linguistics education or personal revelation from God. The written word is the message itself, and just being able to read an accurate translation of it in your own language without someone else’s interpretation is supposed to be the only necessary thing for someone to understand God and the sacrifice of Jesus.
Except the written word isn’t good enough, the ecumenical councils were democratic in nature and even the three major divisions of the faith can’t agree on which is canonical and what is heretical/apocryphal after thousands of years of deliberation. So now you get pumped full of interpretation from day one. The snake is Satan, not a talking snake (too close to other mythology for their liking.) The cosmological beliefs of this faith included after lives from the get go, even though Sheol translates to grave and most Jews (including Jesus, if his line about “outer darkness” is to be believed) simply thought of death as the end unless spiritual resurrection took place. Turns out afterlives were mostly included when the Greek converts started bringing their traditions into the faith, and it was deemed necessary since it keeps people from leaving the religion. You get told countless things that aren’t from the text, but rather a “what could have happened/what could have been intended” and how it applies to your pastors agenda/tithes your life.
You can buy the Philadelphia cream cheese smoked salmon spread, it’s not the best but it’s ok, you get what you pay for. Otherwise you make your own with your own smoke salmon which I’m sure you can buy from somewhere, I live around a lot of First Nations so fresh salmon is easy to find where I live. You can make it yourself with a smoker or buy premade.
I like putting it on bagels myself but you could throw it on a sandwich by itself or mixed in with some cream cheese.

This is not a hot take, people are aware of the dissonance of using Reddit to complain about Reddit. But many folks are still upset but not upset enough to leave, or would like to leave but aren’t ready for places like Lemmy yet. It still needs work and polish before the average Joe will be comfortable here.
So in the meantime I say go for it, having fuck spez be one of the main focal points of the whole canvas is incredible and sends a message. Yea most folks have heard about it by now but might be surprised users are still upset, or never really understood what the big deal was before but maybe they look into it now. Every bit of negative sentiment on Reddit about Reddit will slowly push users away. This is more than a bit of negative sentiment.
There are still people OOTL on reddit, and there are also people who have no clue who u/spez is. Until people start calling out Steve Huffman by name for being a greedy pig boy, it won’t have much mainstream effect. A significant chunk of reddit’s userbase is relatively young (last 5 years or so) and have very little in the way of context.
Sabotaging the quality of reddit also hurts spez. Advertisers have been pulling out, ipo valuation is going down. If the super users make it a place people don’t want to go, they will stop going, and it will get worse. If they make life hard for the mods, some of them will say “fuck it.” And stop being mods because they will realize it’s not worth it.
Can’t talk for everyone, but for the case of rplace, I’d say propaganda.
I know of people who still use reddit as they always do, and its likely because they don’t know reddit’s latest (and terrible) corporate decisions, so using rplace to spread a message that tells people something is wrong with reddit is the first step for these people to find the right path: leaving reddit.
Hey, what better way to convey how people feel about Spez than to collaborate in such large numbers on his own platform to draw it out pixel for pixel…
r/place isn’t gonna last much longer either, I wouldn’t be surprised if many of the people that collaborated on the Fuck Spez messages end up ditching Reddit more or less altogether after r/place is over.

Roughly speaking, there are three different ways people handle when something they enjoy is changed in a way they don’t enjoy.
The first simply cut their losses and move on, abandoning the thing. Nothing wrong with that. Things change and it’s okay to move on to something else. Companies that are causing harm to their user base should suffer the consequences of their decisions. Do this too much, though, and you may find you abandon your loves too easily.
The second just accept and bear it. Arguably nothing wrong with that as long as you still enjoy it. Just be careful that apathy is not taken for permission for further change.
The third will attempt to fight back in an attempt to preserve it. These are the type who still use Reddit even though they know it’s broken. They do not abandon it because to do so is to lose it entirely. They are trying to work within the system to change the system. Nothing wrong with that either, as long as you know when the battle is lost. They obviously don’t believe it has been lost yet.
ich_iel is peak German humor and internet culture. It’s a shame that they live on forbidden lands now. Although there’s hope, as the great migration has already begun
