You’d be surprised how many people I see in the public restroom at my work doing just that.

AlligatorBlizzard ,

In the early 2000s my mother’s bank got hands free headsets. She was horrified at how many of her coworkers would answer the phone in the bathroom.

altima_neo ,

I see dudes come in and start pissing in the urinal while thinking their phone in the other hand.

Also very regularly hear dudes in the toilet stalls answering phone calls while taking a shit. It’s fucking gross.

Have you tried using a calculator?

AFKBRBChocolate ,

I’m fairness, a calculator wouldn’t explain how to get there. An LLM might not explain it correctly, but it will explain it.

SpaceNoodle ,

So a calculator is more valuable, then.

Technus ,

WolframAlpha will do the right math, and walk you through it (though IIRC you have to pay for that part).

Glemek ,

Pretty sure I am using the free version, or if I paid it was a one time thing and long ago but it will walk you thru at least some problems. Example:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/7f2c19da-e3c4-4aea-a0f7-11d191bc6740.jpeg

Technus ,

If that’s WolframAlpha Classic, you probably paid for it a decade ago like I did.

Glemek , (edited )

You are right! There isn’t any indication in the app itself that I could find though; but when I searched it up on google play it says I have classic installed, not standard.

A hard thing I try to get my kids to understand. The bus time is at [what:ever]. That’s when the bus leaves. Not when you roll up to the stop. Not when you step out the door. That’s butt-in-seat-leaving-time. If you’re walking up to the stop and the bus is pulling away at bus:time - too bad, so sad. That applies to many things that require you to be on time for. 5 minutes early is on time. On time is too late. Astonishing what a difficult concept that is to get across.

volvoxvsmarla ,

As a parent with a toddler who seems to be light-years away from understanding this concept, when do you think that understanding starts to kick in? Like, what can I expect at age 5 or 7?

RememberTheApollo_ ,

I think for some it never takes hold. Ours are in the early teens and it’s barely starting to register.

Chadus_Maximus , (edited )

26 here. When it does finally happen I’ll let you know. I just hated seeing all the time wasted by my parents as they arrived early so I vowed to never be like them.

LifeOfChance ,

You gotta start doing it with a bunch of smaller less important things. We started with things like bed time 7pm was lights out not the start or getting ready. We started around age 3 or 4 and after probably 6 months it really sunk in. When planning to leave the house we would give a 45m warning and since day 1 we never had issues. With that said though kids grasp things differently. Some kids thrive on schedules and routines…

Butt why?

Magister , in I’m ashamed I asked but this post is not about me
@Magister@lemmy.world avatar

It happens, I once ask a question about a spinning wheel and the rpm required to have 1G. chatGPT started a couple of calculus and in the end answered that to have 1G, the diameter should be 7 times the radius. I answered back “this does not make sense, a diameter is by definition 2 times the radius”, it apologized and redid the right calculus :)

bulwark ,

That’s why I can’t ever trust what it says. No conviction. I’m like stick to your guns chatGPT.

Technus ,

This is because LLMs do not inherently understand math. They stick characters together that are likely to go together based on the content they were trained on. They’re literally just glorified autocorrect.

If you want a tool that can actually do math from natural language input, try WolframAlpha.

ASeriesOfPoorChoices ,

I am so glad to see someone pushing Wolfram Alpha. It’s frustrating that more people don’t know about it, when it’s been around so long now.

Technus ,

I paid like $5 for the Android app (now WolframAlpha Classic) like 10 years ago and it’s been worth every penny. I use it for anything that needs complicated unit conversions.

lone_faerie ,

The Android app is incredible. WolframAlpha has a premium subscription, but I don’t get why anyone would pay for it when the app includes all the same features.

dalekcaan ,

Wolfram was completely indispensable for me during college. I always meant to get into Mathematica as well, but never got around to figuring it out.

MindTraveller ,

Calling the inputs to use wolfram alpha effectively natural language is very generous. I could never get the hang of it

Donkter ,

This is what people don’t understand about char gpt. It’s not a tool for accuracy, even the company who made it says that. Then idiots come in and say “see it does math wrong! And it can’t get a fact right! Only a moron would say this is the wave of the future!” And don’t get me wrong. Google added it into their search engine because of the hype and low and behold, the LLM was inaccurate.

What is chat gpt food for? Creativity and abstracting. An LLM model is really good when you need a list of 10 terrible names for a dog food company to get your brain thinking. It’s good at helping someone outline a story they want to write or make their email sound more professional. It’s useful as an aid to help someone plan a schedule. The best use of chatgpt is to work with it, not try to get it to do a task without you. An LLM works best with piecemeal feedback and someone knowledgeable in the subject that can vet the answers it’s giving.

What boomer wrote this

laranis ,

Seriously. Can we stop this ridiculous obsession with “generational” comparisons, please, and the click bait that goes with it? Let’s instead start learning empathy and stop trying to force fit everything into an arbitrary category. Can we really not, collectively, as a species, grasp nuance and the eternally changing state of everything?

Probably not, but here’s to hoping.

jdeath ,

nassim taleb calls it “over-platonification,” expecting everything to meet some platonic ideal. it is absolutely pervasive. this is another great example of it

thesystemisdown ,

Iaranis, I’m not speaking to you directly. Instead, I want to expand on your eloquent and pleasant message.

It amazes me how quickly some are willing to accept age related generalizations and reject generalizations based on other criteria like race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. I’ve been around long enough to understand that all of it is a weird control mechanism. I’ve known people nearing the end of their days that spent a lifetime advocating for all the right things. That should be enough for folks to understand that we are all immature, flawed, and prone to bias; while capable of fostering positive change.

Don’t marginalize anyone, young or old because of their age. We all get the same short life to try to live to its fullest.
