assassin_aragorn , to world in Hamas tried to send fighters to Egypt in ambulances for wounded Gazans — US official

I understand the skepticism, but this is where it’s good to know your history. Radical militants have snuck in with Palestinian refugees before in the past. This has happened before.

It’s why Egypt was so reticent to accept refugees. These radicals have snuck in and caused civil strife. They even killed the King of Jordan, in what’s called Black September. This is why neighboring Arab countries aren’t taking in refugees either.

Hamas is utterly evil.

mwguy OP ,

Oh I’m not really that skeptical of the report. Hamas has done this multiple times before.

dumdum666 , to world in Israel says Islamic Jihad rocket misfire caused blast near Gaza hospital

Okay I actually made the effort to listen to the Audio and took a look at those photos.

The two men in the audio recording are talking about a misfire that happened directly behind the hospital - from a nearby cemetery to be exact.

https://bit.ly/3S4xqiG

On the other hand you attached a picture that shows a rocket launch site that is quite a long way from the Hospital - or is this the cemetery those men in the voice recording were talking about?

Tryptaminev , to world in Israel, US said working to prevent ICC arrest warrant against Netanyahu

Israel and the US show once again that they are enemies to a rule based international order. They are enemies to justice, diplomacy and human rights. Quite frankly they are terrorists.

Now the only question that remains is whether the countries that are signatories to the ICC will uphold a rule based order and get those criminals to face responsibility in a court of law, or whether it was all just for show and they happily descend into barbarism.

DarkGamer , to world in Hamas rejects Israel’s offer of two-month pause in Gaza fighting — Egyptian official
@DarkGamer@kbin.social avatar

It's a shame they don't seem to care about Palestinian lives and Israel is expected to care more than they do. What's baffling to me is that they still enjoy widespread support, nearly three in four Palestinians approve of Hamas and October 7th. Evidently this situation is what they want? If Hamas were deposed and the hostages released, this war could be over tomorrow.

DeadHorseX OP ,
@DeadHorseX@lemmy.world avatar

The more Palestinian civilians Hamas throw into the meat-grinder, the more upset Westerners, who no longer understand war nor believe in anything worth fighting for, become.

The more upset they become, the more they pressure their governments to put pressure on Israel.

Eventually, Israel is forced to let Hamas live.

Hamas recover, then unleash even more violence a few years down the line.

Rinse. Repeat.

DdCno1 ,

I don't think Israel is playing this game the way Hamas and other terrorists expected them to play it. Didn't Hezbollah fighters recently complain that Israel is now sometimes striking without warning them?

Kidplayer_666 ,

I think that Israel is playing the game exactly the way that Iran wants them to. The unreasonable level of violence against civilians is isolating Israel diplomatically and deeply tainting US reputation for relatively little cost.

Netanyahu is playing this game because his survival depends on it. As soon as war ends, he is kicked out and a bunch of judicial processes fall on him that he has been avoiding with his immunity. He has a vested interest in prolonging the conflict.

Hamas has a vested interest in prolonging the conflict too, because it means that they can be “freedom fighters” and “martyrs” instead of terrorists, and assassins, and means a reasonable amount of people flock to them. It also gives them legitimacy compared to the Palestinian Authority

DarkGamer ,
@DarkGamer@kbin.social avatar

Hamas and Oct 7 has ~72% approval from the Palestinian public, so I guess the destruction of Gaza is what most everyone wants? Baffling.

As for Bibi, his asymmetrical response is not jeopardizing US relations so much as he's jeopardizing Biden's second term. Trump will probably give Israel a blank check and may even want to push the big red missile button himself.

kaffiene ,

You don’t understand that an imprisoned people would support people fighting their oppressors?

ultranaut ,

Hamas are not idiots, the response is exactly what they wanted. A whole new generation of resistance is being bombed into existence now and Israel is alienating its closest allies to do it, for Hamas that’s a victory. They expected Israel to kill a bunch of random civilians in a brutal response to their attack, it’s not a surprise for them.

DarkGamer ,
@DarkGamer@kbin.social avatar

Sure thousands of civilians under our rule died as our human shields from a war we provoked, our critical infrastructure was destroyed because we used it for war, thousands of our soldiers were killed, and we didn't achieve our stated objectives, but future generations are going to be really mad about it so I consider that a total victory.

-Hamas (not idiots)

ultranaut ,

Yes, Hamas is immoral and does idiotic things from our perspective but it’s a mistake to believe that makes them idiots. They didn’t just stumble into attacking Israel, and they weren’t naive about how Israel would respond.

JimmyMcGill ,

Yes Israel is supposed to care more about Palestinians than Hamas because Hamas is a terrorist organization an Israel is supposedly not that.

When Israel is literally starving them to death who do you think they will “support”. They literally have no choice. It’s either terrorists or the people killing you.

Free Palestine

probably ,

You realize that all peace talks have failed, because the Palestinian governments refused any deal that required them to recognize Israel’s right to exist. Every deal.

And before that, when Israel accepted the offer by the British, the Palestinians didn’t accept it because the surrounding countries essentially said they would kill all of the Jews in Israel and take the entire area. Which they tried. Twice. And lost. Twice. And in the ceasefire terms, those countries granted Israel those disputed territories. Actually much more than they currently have, as they gave back most of it to Egypt in peace talks with them.

Palestine could have been a country many times over. But they do not want peace. They wants the whole of Israel.

And during all of those time, things have just gotten worse. And the hatred between the two sides grows. But the only thing that has stopped Palestine from being a country is the fact that the governments of Palestine believe negotiations start and stop at having it all.

So tell me, how does anyone free Palestine?

Lmaydev ,

You got any sources? I’m not that well read up on the conflict.

I second that request, I need to know more and read more about all of this and all of the sides, before I know what I’m talking about.

Wahots ,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

(Not op)

It’s an interesting read. I’m sure there are better sources, but the 40s-80s were a crazy time, with basically all of their neighbors declaring war on them, Israel managing to hold off five different countries, then the UN stopping the war only to have egypt or syria re-arm and try again. I didn’t know that the USSR was also helping and hindering at various points. Basically all Jewish peoples immediately fled all Arab countries, peppered with other countries whenever there was a rise in anti-jewish sentiments (eg, in Russia).

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Israel

Kwakigra ,

This is a lie. In the late 70s and early 80s even the PLO was pushing for a two state solution and even removed “Anti-Zionism” from its official goals in the 90s. I’m not going to say everyone in Palestine has always supported one solution or another like you’re saying. I’m not going to say that everyone in Israel wants to eliminate all Palestinians from Israeli territory either, although many do, especially the political powers who blocked the two state solution from the other side during that time. This simplistic reading that Palestinians are nothing more than frothing-mouthed mass-murderers is disgusting especially considering who has had power over whom in recent decades.

War is not a heroic struggle of good vs evil, it is a series of economic and political developments which have been transpiring for decades. There has been a lot of bad behavior generally which lead us to this point. Let’s not offer absurd ideas in times of turmoil like this. That’s not going to help any innocent Palestinian or Isreali civilians getting caught in the crossfire.

anothermember ,

Supposing you’re right, do you think all Palestinians should suffer due to failures of their government? I’m pretty sure they’re not a hive mind.
