Palmer Luckey's FPGA Game Boy clone lands just in time for the holidays | TechSpot (www.techspot.com)

Former Oculus designer and founder of ModRetro, Palmer Luckey, is set to release a new retro handheld gaming device later this year, aiming to compete with the Analogue Pocket. This comes as great news for tech enthusiasts, as it adds another option in the FPGA-based market....

He also got caught secretly funding a racist trolling group to spread hate and harass people.

Not OP, but it’s still lack of hardware support for me. I tried to daily Linux on my laptop and gave up in frustration after several months because a few key pieces of hardware are not supported and seemingly never will be.

The Economist does not typically list individual authors on their articles.

DMT is not orally active unless you’re on a MAOI, which is dangerous and could potentially explain the symptoms being described. I wouldn’t trust any chocolate being sold as both psychoactive and containing DMT. You’re either getting ripped off or taking something potentially very dangerous.

ultranaut ,

Definitely stay away from DMT unless you want to trip balls. You should probably be on a restricted diet too, MAO inhibition is not safe and eating things like cheese could potentially send you to the hospital. I would recommend consulting a doctor if you haven’t, literally the wrong food can be life threatening so it is really something to take seriously. Also, Salvia is inherently a hellish nightmare for most people. It’s a very weird drug that fucks with perception in such a fundamental way that it is very hard to have a good time.

Y Combinator seems like a nexus of creepy and unhinged techbros, I’m not surprised they have a CEO who wields antisemitic conspiracy theories against his critics.

ultranaut ,

Wow, from the article you linked here’s one of them plotting to wield a fascist mob against a journalist just like a proper villain, in case there were any doubts:

“If things get hot, it may be interesting to sic the Dark Enlightenment audience on a single vulnerable hostile reporter to dox them and turn them inside out with hostile reporting sent to their advertisers/friends/contacts,” Mr. Srinivasan said in an email viewed by The New York Times, using a term, “Dark Enlightenment,” that was synonymous with the neoreactionary movement.

Boox Palma, a phone sized e-reader that runs Android. I read a lot more books and I think the e-ink display makes it easier to fall asleep.

ultranaut ,

It’s full Android with the Play store but wifi only, no cell modem. You can install whatever you want just like on a phone, you just can’t do calls or SMS. I haven’t tried Google Maps on it but I’m sure it works, although you might need to adjust things to make it look better. I’ve used it to send audio to Bluetooth devices but haven’t tried the built in speaker, I wouldn’t expect it to sound good.

Massive issues with sleep and desperate for a solution.

I’ve been struggling with sleep issues for over a decade now. My Doctor has prescribed me all sorts of medication, all of which has had many adverse side effects. What I do know that works, is Xanax. My wife was prescribed it for some stress issues and occasionally will give me one so I can finally sleep. Obviously asking my...

It’s possible to be both a useful and trash drug. Benzos are inherently dangerous in ways that lots of other drugs are not, it is very easy to fuck up your life with them.

ultranaut ,

Listening to a slightly boring audiobook has been the most consistently effective method I’ve found. Also, I had to give up caffeine.

ultranaut ,

It’s easier if you cut back first so your body gets used to having less of it. I started by only having any before 12pm, then 10am, then I cut out energy drinks entirely, then I’d do part decaf coffee until I finally went full decaf. I definitely noticed some headaches and felt kind of shit occasionally but I don’t remember it being too terrible.

ultranaut ,

Kind of. Clinton administration participated in negotiations and signed the Rome Statute but was very explicitly critical of it and never sent the treaty to the Senate for actual approval. Official US government position and the position of both parties has been to generally shit on the court ever sense.

ultranaut ,

The US is not a member of the ICC and has been opposed to its existence from the start. While it’s true the ICC tends to be popular with a large percentage of Democrats, there’s always been bipartisan support for shitting on it.

Why does a state like California that has supermajorities in both houses of the legislature not have a livable wage, housing guarantees, universal healthcare, and other very progressive policies?

I keep being told it’s because of the Republicans that we can’t have nice things. So what gives in California? We should be overflowing with progressive policies.

ultranaut ,

The Democratic party is a big tent and California is a big state with lots of competing interests. California does tend to lead the US in adopting progressive policies but the reality is progressives are one faction among many.

ultranaut ,

Unemployment is still very low, there’s likely not enough people in that kind of situation to have a significant impact on the housing market.

Kagi has a “Fediverse Forums” lens.

All UC Campuses are private property of the UC Regents.

That doesn’t sound right. The University of California system is public, the regents are appointed by the governor. UC property is owned by the state of California.

ultranaut ,

A public trust is not a private entity, that’s why it’s called a public trust. What you’re claiming about the UC system doesn’t make sense. The power the regents wield flows from the governor and that’s it, the UC system is not privately owned.

ultranaut ,

Yes. The police have not been privatized yet, all the police cars are in fact owned by the public.

NYPD union sues Adams administration over new ‘zero tolerance’ policy on steroid use among cops (www.nydailynews.com)

New York City’s largest cop union is suing Police Commissioner Edward Caban and Mayor Adams for implementing a new “zero tolerance” policy on NYPD officers using steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs, the Daily News has learned....

They aren’t the military but they do wield lethal force on behalf of the state. It’s not a normal employee/employer relationship at all. With that level of responsibility it seems reasonable that maximum transparency should be expected of them.

ultranaut ,

It used to be better, and the family that own the company are far right Christian extremists.

ultranaut ,

Maybe I misremember but I thought they went crazy during covid and got into the whole antimask nonsense and refusing to comply with health and safety rules.

ultranaut ,

Take a look at Meta revenue numbers, they can afford billions in R&D investment just fine. I’m not sure what market share you’re talking about but there’s plenty of money for them to afford the VR research they do.

You would probably enjoy Alexandra Savior, The Last Dinner Party, and Roisin Murphy.

The US military is building the floating pier with materials they get from the US taxpayer. If you’re trying to argue it’s a waste of tax dollars, its not.

ultranaut ,

The US military has a massive global logistics operation and spends their time training for doing things like this. Of any organization on earth they probably have the greatest capacity for building a floating pier and ensuring aid flows through it. Why are you so hung up on the logistics of building material deliveries?

ultranaut ,

It’s like the Sovereign Citizen movement but for cops, fundamentally it’s pure nonsense spawned from motivated reasoning by profoundly ignorant people out of a desire for power.

ultranaut ,

It’s an interesting idea but inherently impossible to prove and thus ultimately kind of a useless question for anything but entertainment. I think it’s really not much different than believing life is a very elaborate dream and you’re going to eventually wake up as a butterfly or whatever.

Anonymous users are dominating right-wing discussions online. They also spread false information (apnews.com)

The reposts and expressions of shock from public figures followed quickly after a user on the social platform X who uses a pseudonym claimed that a government website had revealed “skyrocketing” rates of voters registering without a photo ID in three states this year — two of them crucial to the presidential contest....

ultranaut ,

Part of the problem is there’s lots of gullible people who repeat whatever nonsense makes them feel righteous. It’s usually not clear if you’re talking to a dumbass who fell for right-wing or Russian imperialist talking points, or an actual neonazi pretending to be a misguided leftist for trolling purposes, or an actual Russian imperialist pretending to be a misguided leftist for trolling purposes. I think you’re right though that Lemmy is not a likely target for any kind of organized propaganda campaign because it’s relatively tiny and would be a waste of time for those sorts of groups.

Robots do vacuuming and mopping at least once a week, some areas more often. I do basic cleaning of the kitchen regularly and more in depth cleaning occasionally. Bathrooms are about the same but less frequent. I find getting stoned really helpful for staying on top of cleaning, it’s a much more enjoyable experience.

They are relatively new but well funded and actively expanding. From what I remember its mostly a small network of rich guys connected to the Claremont Institute who dream of overthrowing the government and becoming warlords in a fascist theocracy so now they are trying to start a secret society type boys club so they can recruit more followers.

I sort of miss the screws too but it’s so much better when a cable accidentally gets yanked and it just comes right out instead of transmitting the force into whatever it’s attached to.

I thought it was pretty well established that Twitch was like a softcore OnlyFans that caters to lonely gamers seeking parasocial relationships, but that’s just my impression as someone who doesn’t pay attention or care about this stuff. The few times I’ve looked at it the sexualized content was obvious and unavoidable.

ultranaut ,

That’s good to hear, I don’t use it. As I said, I’ve only checked it out a few times and that was not recent. My impression of it is apparently outdated, or doesn’t reflect a common experience. The times I looked at it there were half naked women in bathtubs and shit like that.

ultranaut ,

If you have any reason to suspect the quality of your water, get it tested! It’s not that expensive, you just ship a sample to a lab and they email you a report. Because so many people depend on well water there’s a bunch of labs all over the country that do water quality testing, it’s a relatively cheap and accessible service.

ultranaut ,

Why do you believe “the process must start elsewhere”? I’ve literally had YouTube start feeding me this sort of content, which I have no interest in at all and actively try to avoid. It seems very obvious that YouTube is a major factor in inculcating these belief systems in people who would otherwise not be exposed to them without YouTube ensuring they reach an audience.

ultranaut ,

It’s all fundamentally nonsense, none of it has to do with anything real.

ultranaut ,

It’s bad economics to dismiss a recession as if it didn’t happen just because it wasn’t as severe as you would like. Many recessions are mild and little more than a “blip”, that’s completely normal and ignoring them will only lead you to faulty conclusions about what is actually going on with the economy.

Mystery/ crime/ horror novel recommendations?

ETA: I have read and downloaded many of your recommendations and have had lots of fun reading them! You are such a welcoming enthusiastic bunch. Thanks a lot! Still looking for more suggestions in case someone wants to add to the ever growing list. So far this year I have read twenty seven books....
