Instigate , to worldnews in How British patients were infected with HIV by US prisoners who donated blood for a few dollars

donated blood for a few dollars

If they were paid for it then it’s not a donation - it’s a sale. They sold their blood. I get that that sounds weird, but it’s accurate. That’s why in Australia it’s illegal to give any financial or other incentives for blood, so it truly makes it a donation.

@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

This is where the drive to withdraw from NATO comes from. Because if you withdraw before your puppet master would trigger article 5 you have no problem.

maynarkh ,

The US withdrawing from NATO would make NATO pretty much meaningless, since most other NATO members are part of the EU, which has its own military alliances. Notable exception being the UK.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know if that is true. For the short term … most definitely. But in the end a lot of countries still benefit from the mutual defense clause. NATO would have to reinvent itself for sure, but it is not an unsurmountable problem. It might cause the UK and Canada to withdraw too meaning it will be the defacto European military.

In the Long run the US would lose so much in their power position towards China. Because if Beijing can just keep trading with the EU and make money there, the US will have a much harder time doing their powerplay. China will annex Taiwan and noone will be able to prevent it.

barsoap ,

The UK is not going to leave the European security architecture, no chance in hell: It would contradict a good millennium of UK foreign policy, they’d rather leave the Commonwealth than have France and Germany, much less the rest of the mainland, united without them.

It’s the US which is the odd one out in the Anglosphere.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

I think you are probably right. But after the own goal that was brexit… I’m not convinced of anything that has to do with these kind of things.

Dasus ,
@Dasus@lemmy.world avatar

The EU also has a mutual defense clause.

That and many others in Europe. Unfortunately none that Ukraine was a part of.

Which is why Ukraine needs quick accession to the EU.

TropicalDingdong ,

No need to withdraw from NATO if NATO can effectively prevented from accomplishing its mission (the current political state).

Demoncracy , to worldnews in Europe must be ready for US to quit Nato, diplomats warn
@Demoncracy@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Everyone quit NATO. Thanks.

PowerCrazy , to worldnews in Europe must be ready for US to quit Nato, diplomats warn

If the US “quits” Nato (they won’t), then Nato is done.
Specifically Article 13:

After the Treaty has been in force for twenty years, any Party may cease to be a Party one year after its notice of denunciation has been given to the Government of the United States of America, which will inform the Governments of the other Parties of the deposit of each notice of denunciation.

Even if Trump becomes president, he isn’t going to withdraw from Nato, he both can’t* unilaterally, and also doesn’t actually want to. So I’m not really sure what the point of this article is except fear mongering for the benefit of the European MIC.

*National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 forbids the president from unilaterally withdrawing from nato. Now that may be unconstitutional (and I would say that act is unconstitutional, but lol that has never mattered for the Military.)

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

US very clearly sees China as its mains competitor, and it will be all too happy to leave Europe holding the bag with the Ukraine debacle. The fact that Nuland just got dismissed and replaced with a China hawk is a pretty clear sign of things to come. Europe is entirely dependent on US both militarily and economically now, and if US quit NATO then Europe would still be just as dependent on US as before. Military industry will keep selling weapons to Europe, but there won’t be any more obligations on the part of US allowing the neocons to focus on trying to provoke a war with China.

Aidinthel ,

Even if he can’t formally quit, he could effectively quit by just refusing to meet the obligations of the treaty. Who would stop him?

D61 ,

There’s sending in a “resignation letter” and then there’s just not showing up to work.

A US President could just refuse to send money, troops, or straight up redeploy US troops back to the USA.

Man o man that would be fun to watch…

flames5123 ,

Nope! My wife experiences a “contact high” when I’m tripping, and we’re just cuddling for a couple hours in bed listening to our favorite music. She’s super empathetic so that may be why she gets the “contact high.”

So like when Reddit found the Boston Bomber, gotcha.

I’ll take this with a grain of salt.

avater OP , (edited )
@avater@lemmy.world avatar

Not really, because even some news stations now access this public available data and checked it with their sources. Good example would be Bucha where those sources were used to verify the crimes that happend there. But yeah of course you always need a trustful source which uses this data.

Good starting point is to go to official news pages and avoid social media like twitter, Reddit or even lemmy until those news is proven.

Fades ,

Big fucking difference but sure if it’s not an individual hired directly by some govt it must be akin to a redditor!

Give me a fuckin break

Example of the power of OSINT: isdglobal.org/…/jan-6-series-how-osint-powered-th…

Law enforcement also used geofence data (obtained via search warrant) and flight records to place her at the Capitol riot. Indeed, charging documents show that many of the January 6 defendants were identified by law enforcement using these triangulation methods — largely based on OSINT — to piece together proof that they were involved. The challenge of the reliability of OSINT data was able to be overcome through the large amount of digital evidence available.

Have you actually ready any of it yourself? Or are you just passing armchair judgement based solely on headlines?

    Broadly speaking, Kyiv’s highly anticipated counter-offensive has gathered much-needed momentum in recent weeks, with hard-fought gains around the strategically important village of Robotyne. If this falls, the road to the Azov sea will be in sight.

    It fell.

    From the ISW today:

    A Ukrainian source indicated that RU forces have laterally redeployed elements of a relatively elite formation from eastern to the area, potentially supporting ISW’s assessment that Russian forces lack sizeable operational reserves.

    Simply having a huge number of living bodies to order around doesn't mean you can actually make soldiers out of them. You need equipment for them, you need time to train them, you need people with skills to do the training, you need the ability to physically move them into position. Russia is running out of those things faster than they're running out of living bodies.
