Crow , to mildlyinfuriating in Air Canada changed my flight for the 3rd time, I'm now landing in Toronto 1 hour AFTER my next flight departure.
@Crow@lemmy.world avatar

The mistake was going to Toronto. Pearson airport is so astonishingly poorly managed for such an expensive project. Always avoid Toronto.

odium ,

LHR is also very poorly managed for such an expensive project. OP’s picking all the wrong airports.

scarrtt ,

Heathrow is literally 1984, I hate the place

BastingChemina OP ,

You make it sound like I have a choice, going from St Lucia to France is a challenge. It got worse since COVID.

I think I had issues on close to 50% of my flights, the worst one was a 2 days delay on the way to France and a 2 days delays on the way back but it’s only because I ended up taking a private flight from Martinique to St Lucia.

On the bright side the company paid for the hotel each time, so there is worse situation than being stuck in a hotel in the Caribbean.

Like being stuck in Toronto airport…

mycatiskai ,

If you can fly to Gatwick, it is likely cheaper because Heathrow has more airport fees. The train to Gatwick from London was great it had a screen in each cabin that tells you which is more or less full of people and even tells you if the toilet is vacant or out of order.

@cod@lemmy.world avatar

Pearson is the absolute worst. I’ll always try to use Hamilton if I can

bl4ckblooc ,

I transferred through Pearson before going home to BC a couple years ago. I had just finished a bunch of international travelling and couldn’t believe how bad the airport was. Even the amenities; the only place to eat outside security was Tim’s and some poutine place. The Ben Cambodia has a better designed airport (although it’s pretty new).

For more pseudo-science and a few good laughs, look up John Harvey Kellogg, the brother to the cereal mogul. Better yet, look up the comical farce The Road to Wellville with Sir Anthony Hopkins as the good doctor, which goes over the gentleman’s notions of “healthy living.”

Wasn’t John Harvey Kellogg the cereal guy? The wikipedia article on him talks about him inventing corn flakes and the corn flakes article links back to him.

ummthatguy ,
@ummthatguy@lemmy.world avatar

It was the brother Will Keith Kellogg who was more interested in the business side, vs John the health nut, who made it more popular. John went on to make his version of a “sanitarium.”

@altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

John Harvey Kellogg and Will Keith Kellogg kinda invented it together. John Harvey was a fucking nutcase and did everything he could to reduce sexual desires (by eating a bland vegetarian diet) and promote health (with enemas ).

They competed on store shelves against each other for a while. John Harvey sold his bland version under the Sanitas brand and Will Keith with his sweetened version under the Kellogg brand, as kind of a fuck you to his brother. He was riding on John Harvey’s fame, but also prevented John from using the Kellogg’s name on his own product.

The cereal sold today is from Will Keith’s Kellogg company.

    stevedidwhat_infosec , to coffee in How do you store your grounded coffee?

    In the timeout corner 🤪

    I’m no coffee connoisseur- but wouldn’t storing the coffee beans in ground form be more prone to static build up, humidity, etc etc than just storing the beans in whole form?

    gila , (edited )

    I’d have to assume the effect is not that significant, given pre-ground coffee seems to be the most popular form statista.com/…/coffee-grinding-method-among-us-pa…

    Probably mitigated by the part of that result which is instant coffee, though

    jasparagus ,

    Oxidation (and other processes) do affect coffee flavor, and grinding it up increases surface area / exposure to oxygen, speeding that up. Putting it in the fridge seems to also worsen flavor, but the freezer seems to be pretty reliable. Here’s a nice video discussing this by a weird coffee person (James Hoffmann): Should you freeze coffee beans?

    Also, KGLW, nice!

    And any choice someone makes that is different to yours is a result of their ignorance.

    And it was worth derailing this harmless thread about OP’s hobby tins to explain this to me despite that I personally make the same choice.

    That’s not even an honest equivocation of what I said about coffee, just some um ackshually BS

    stevedidwhat_infosec ,

    You literally said in your comment “I’d have to assume”

    And so when someone points out that your assumption is not only false, but tries to point out that your rationale isn’t logical, you take it as a personal attack…

    Chill out dude. We’re talking about coffee holding techniques ffs and you’re acting like I called you a moron. I even pointed out in my comment that I wasn’t a connoisseur and posed it as a question.

    You came in with a false assumption, literally just based on a stats post you likely found after googling. Talk about derailing… you took a conversation that would’ve been about the science of storing coffee and turned it… into a discussion about statistics??

    Obvious troll. See ya dude.

    gila ,

    Hey my bad. Theres no personal attack here. I interpreted your response as rude, because your equivocation seems to ignore that I acknowledged oxidation and/or static as relevant factors like you suggested, and instead responds to a false reading of a silly position I don’t hold. I just don’t think they’re that significant, as in, storing your leftover unused grounds in a tin for a short time after grinding too much (read: a method of controlling oxidation) probably doesn’t deserve pushback.

    If the majority’s coffee is presumably more oxidised than OP’s; I don’t think it’s reasonable to assume that this is simply due to their collective ignorance about oxidation. And with that context, I don’t think it’s reasonable to answer a question about storing ground coffee with, “don’t do it”. Seems very Reddit. I doubt OP is grinding more than they need on purpose. But maybe you just missed/skipped that part of my comment. Either way, I’m open to my assumption being shown as incorrect, should anyone address it.

    If it was a Pixel 2 or a 4a I’m keeping it, that phone was peak modern smartphone before everything went downhill with no rear fingerprint scanner and fixed focus selfie cams

    Oha ,

    Loved my Pixel 2 XL. Upgraded to a P5 a year ago tho. Really amazing phone

    some_random_nick ,

    I have a 4a 5G variant and I can’t stand how the “stock” experience manages to be worse than on my old Samsung :-/ The pics are great tho

    LainTrain ,

    Say whaaaat. That’s an interesting and brave take.

    How’s the pixel experience worse than Samsung? That’s the reason I stopped buying Samsungs way back. All the malware PUPs Samsung loads on being my main sticking point.

    velvetThunder ,

    Well it’s less features for less bloat.

    From there it depends how much of those extra features are useful / how much you miss in stock android.

    LainTrain ,

    What features? Most of the bloat is just duplicate applications like “Google photos” and “Samsung photos”

    bitwolf ,

    I’d say Dex is pretty cool. Thats really all I’d like to bring over to Google Experience personally.

    Hoping it drops in 15 for Pixels

    some_random_nick ,

    The most annoying thing is that major android updates are mandatory. I could not choose NOT to update. Notifications are bugged as hell for ages. Some just disappear, some don’t even ring/light up. Samsung had some apps that had more features compared to the Google alternatives. The only annoying this were all teh MS apps that I couldn’t deinstall.

    LainTrain ,

    Strange. I’ve never updated my Pixel and it doesn’t bother me about it, and you can always also roll back after an update also since there are no e-fuses or measures of that type, in fact there is even an official tool for this that runs in the chrome browser of all things. I’ve been meaning to go back to Android 10 from 13, ‘Material You’ is just an eyesore.

    I’ve not had issues with notifications either, perhaps it’s worth it to check your settings?

    If there are specific Samsung apps you miss, why not download them from Google Play if available or Apkmirror, or look for FOSS alternatives on F-Droid?

    some_random_nick ,

    The phone kept nagging me to update to 12 and later to 13 all the time. I didn’t manage to find a way to make the notification go away… Maybe it’s just me being a doofus. As for the notifications thing, I literally tried everything except factory resetting my phone. Guess I am just unlucky.

    I wanted to get some of the Samsung apps back, but most weren’t updated to work on 12 at that time and later I just forgot and gave in. I’ve never used F-Droid before but it looks like a good time to start now. Tnx for reminding me about it.

    some_random_nick ,

    One more thing I forgot to add. The OS shits itself when I try to charge my phone and use it at the same time. All apps lag, you can’t scroll, can*t type without noticible delay and can’t even close the app by swiping. This was doxumented on some forums. Noone knows why. (I use the charged I got with my phone)

    GrapheneOS gets rid of all the Google crap, it’s a much lighter and more minimal experience, I really like it. It also has some significant privacy and security improvements, it’s pretty neat.

    some_random_nick ,

    I was thinking about it ever since Louis Rossmann showcased it. But as he had problems using his banking app and some other stuff, I decided it wouldn’t be worth the hassel. Also, many people wrote that with Graphene you lose a lot of the fancy camera shenanigans that Google made. And the camera was one of the more important points in getting this phone.

    Andromxda ,
    @Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    There’s a very detailed article about GrapheneOS banking app compatibility where you can check if your bank’s app works on Graphene: github.com/…/banking-apps-compat-report/

    Regarding the camera: Yes, you lost some quality with the default GrapheneOS camera app. But you can easily install the official Google camera app from the Play store (or anonymously through Aurora) to get full quality. You don’t even need Google play services installed for that to work, and you can revoke it’s network access, so it’s completely offline and private. I use the Google camera app all the time, it works flawlessly.

    Lucidlethargy ,

    Oof, the Pixel 2 XL was hot garbage. I returned mine four times due to speaker issues, and the fourth was no better.

    Not quite sure about that. Wtf is that aspect ratio?

    I’ll have to figure out of I can see it in person, because it reminds me of those 2000’s crappy ultra wide monitors that claimed a normal size but because they were extra wide it ended up being smaller.

    [Edit]

    Ah, it was the Asus Zenphone. I was going to get the 10 because that remained <6" and I still might because that aspect ratio on the Sony looks insane. I don’t know how anyone could reach the top of that without a ladder.

    Anyway, the Zenphone 11 only comes in 6.8". Which is stupid.

    Nikki ,
    @Nikki@lemmy.world avatar

    everyone i suggest to complains about the aspect ratio, and sony does a terrible job showing what theyve done to mitigate it lol

    theres handy sidebars to pull down the top drawer, and a quick shortcut to pull the screen down to reach the top one handed. i got used to it in the first week or so, and love the extra verticality while still feeling like a small phone in my hand. good for doom scrolling and watching a video while doom scrolling

    The Pixel 7a is almost the same size, just 0.2 inches bigger. Unlike the S10e, it is still supported by Google and gets security updates (until 2028). And you can install a better, more secure Android ROM like GrapheneOS.
