RickRussell_CA , to memes in I'm giving them a year until lifetime licenses start to mean nothing.

What amazes me are the number of companies selling “lifetime” VPN service or “lifetime” cloud storage service with a straight face.

Like… that is TRANSPARENTLY a scam. You’re literally gonna sell lifetime licenses to people with more money than common sense, until the entire system is overloaded, then just go out of business.

derpgon ,

I mean, you ARE getti ]ng what you pay for, just not until the end of YOUR lifetime,

merthyr1831 ,

at least with standalone software it’s going to work forever as long as the OS supports it. cant say the same for live service software that you can’t run at home

Ajen ,

How much software is standalone these days, though? It seems like most companies are shifting to SaaS.

merthyr1831 ,

Beyond FOSS there’s not many, though Steam actually has a big catalogue of non-game software that’s standalone

merthyr1831 ,

as long as you can host the “SaaS” elements yourself (nextcloud, for example) there’s a lot more software than you’d initially think. There will always be a market for self-hosted options for cloud software imo: loads of businesses are reluctant to move their internal infrastructure to the cloud

Ajen ,

Nextcloud isn’t SaaS, unless you’re paying someone else to manage your server. Self-hosting is never SaaS.

psud , (edited )

I just bought a lifetime subscription to Nebula (a YouTube-like service akin to a co-op for content creators) and my rationale was

  • Lifetime costs the same as ten years of annual priced subscriptions
  • It will be cheaper than that due to inflation
  • The service has been operating for 5 years, so it’s likely to last at least 10 more
  • The service is philosophically opposed to the sort of place that may try to acquire it

Other stuff, no thanks. Too many practical products (as opposed to entertainment ones) have a great supply of methods to screw you and a great desire to screw you.

dangblingus , to memes in Nintendo doing the smarting

While it’s weird that they waited so long, emulating Nintendo systems is nothing new. We used to emulate SNES in the late 90s. Nintendo has generally always been the first and last name in quality single player gaming experiences, and their games are always in high demand. There will always be a contingent of people dedicated to emulating Nintendo systems, no matter what Barbara Streisand has to say about the matter.

MIDIthrKID ,

“while it’s weird that they waited so long”

My conspiracy theory is that the Switch 2 is going to operate on the same architecture, but have better hardware. My guess is for backwards compatabiliy. This means that on launch day, Yuzu was likely still going to be the best way to play Switch 2 games. Basically it’s a threat to a console that isn’t even out yet. Just a theory.

WalrusDragonOnABike ,

I figure there’s enough differences that they want to scare protentional devs from making the changes needed for it to work on Switch 2. They knew that getting rid of an existing open source emulator wasn’t really possible, but is a new one is not made, then its not just a matter of sharing copies.

But given that consoles are becoming more and more PC-like, I wonder how hard it will be to make an emulator anyways.

Katana314 ,

It wasn’t so much a “wait” as that the reliability of emulation has now caught up with products they’re currently selling. But now I’m curious if this ever happened with the GBA or other handheld consoles that were a bit easier to emulate.

samus12345 ,
@samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

The GBA was emulated before the console was even out in North America.

wreckage ,

While it’s weird that they waited so long,

I think they are afraid emulation on steam deck gains traction.

Since it runs Linux, you could install and run Nintendo games on a competitor portable console that has a lot more games and a more powerful hardware

ExfilBravo ,

People are playing Zelda at high frame rates?! NOT ON MY WATCH - Nintendo

Vlyn ,

That’s not the reason, you have been able to do so for a while. Even longer if you count Breath of the Wild (which ran with the Wii U emulator). The only reason they got their shit kicked in by Nintendo is greed. Patreon + extra money for early access + wanting to create their own paid copy of Nintendo’s online service + timing their press releases with Nintendo releases…

Emulators are legal. Fully intending to profit from creating a competing product isn’t. That’s why they also gave in so quickly when the lawyers showed up, despite having plenty of money to afford defense.

Jako301 ,

Emulators are legal

In general yes, but Yuzu itself probably never was legal in the first place.

At least in the EU and US there are anti-circumvention laws that make circumventing anti-piracy/copy-protection measures illegal in itself even if its done on games you own. Since Yuzu used the prod.keys to decrypt the games, it most likely already broke these laws.

Clent , to memes in Apple

Constantly amused at how hard android users defend their choice and act like it’s iPhone users doing the same.

Always reminds me of the way right wing / Trump supporters behave. They are obsessed with liberals and the Democratic Party in then same way android users are obsessed iPhone users and Apple.

As an iPhone user, I spend no time thinking about android users and I certainly don’t post threads looking for others to validate my purchase.

qjkxbmwvz ,

For me, an Android for personal, iPhone for work.

One of them is a phone that mostly works the way I want it to; the other is a phone that…mostly works the way I want it to.

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I never think about iPhones until I’m forced to enroll one into my MDM and Apple makes me use their terrible Apple Configurator 2 or some iPhone user lightheartedly mentions my green bubbles. As always the squeeky wheels are gettin’ greased.

thorbot ,

I always see android users bitching about non android phones. On the other hand, I NEVER see iPhone users who give a shit about android or complain about them. Interesting….

Zangoose ,

As an Android user, I’ll offer my side to this:

If I had a dollar for every time a friend or family member asked, “Why don’t you just get an iPhone?” I could probably buy the newest iPhone. Added pain that I’m Gen Z in the US where something like 80-90% of people my age use an iPhone.

I swear most of the time people treat having an Android phone as something that needs some sort of defense because they think there’s no reason anyone would possibly consider buying anything other than an iPhone.

Clent ,

And why do they make those offers? Perhaps because you’re complaining about your device and the problems are things that Apple users never encounter?

And that doesn’t explain why android users complain in pseudo-anonymous forums about Apple users. Apple users aren’t making memes about how android users are foolish.

If it’s because real life friends and family suggest they get an iPhone, that’s incredibly passive aggressive.

Zangoose , (edited )

To your first point, it isn’t really an “offer.” I don’t think I’ve ever complained about having an Android phone, because I’ve genuinely liked my Android phones way more than my old iPhone. It pretty commonly comes up whenever communication is involved though because I end up being blamed for not having FaceTime, iMessage, etc. even though most of those problems come from Apple only supporting a messaging standard from the early 90s with Android phones.

To your second point, there are memes though. They’re probably not as common on here because the demographic that uses lemmy (or even Reddit to some degree) is more likely to have an Android phone for various reasons. Look up “android camera meme” if you want a clear example of something that usually isn’t even true.

I’m not going to go after anyone for using an Apple product, because I can see why someone would use one over Android. But Apple tends to attract people that will blindly defend their bad decisions (no headphones jack, no charger, slow refresh-rate screens on everything but the $1000 model, etc.).

This isn’t to say there aren’t similar people defending companies like Samsung, Google, etc. Apple just attracts these people at a whole different level. This meme is obviously hyperbole but to be fair you could make this meme about any obnoxious fan group and it would be just as true.

This makes the most sense to me. I need something. My field is in dire need of more people so I’m not terribly concerned about taking someone’s job, but I’m also a long way from retiring, and who knows maybe the world won’t exist in 30 years.

Anyway, when I have periods of slow work (independent contractor), I feel like my motivation suffers. When I have regular work, I’m also more on at home, cooking, cleaning, etc. When I don’t have my work to keep my focus, I lose focus totally. Definitely a me problem, but my solution is to just do my job and things work out. Maybe it’s a stress thing.

Have a nice day!

20 Hit points for a car isn’t much if we’re going by traditional RPG metrics, but I suppose I’m not sure what the creators were using as a template when they made it.

Depends on how traditional you want to get. The original metric was the number of 14" shells something could survive. Given that, 20 seems pretty good for a car.
