Dingleberry ,

Is latex better than Libre?

Sir_Premiumhengst ,

Depends on who you ask… LaTeX is a typesetting system that uses plain text commands to format and structure documents. Has a bit of a learning curve. It also (usually) does exactly what you ask it for.

Dingleberry ,

So, maybe not worth teaching the in laws, but could be adapted for personal use with some practice?

gornius ,

rainerloeten ,
@rainerloeten@lemmy.world avatar

Depends on what you wanna do. Also it’s a matter of preferences. For anything more complex than a simple letter or a table I’m using Latex. But although I love Latex, I must acknowledge that for some it’s not the right tool.

It has advantages and disadvantages as everything in life ;) Ask your favorite search engine or LLM what those are, I don’t feel qualified to elaborate on that.

successful project

That is a very biased claim. It’s like saying that the PS5 is the most successful gaming platform because God Of War: Ragnarök and Ghost Of Tsushima players prefer it over Xbox and PC.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Did they say it’s the most successful project? Because Sony saying that the PS5 is a successful platform because players prefer it over other options doesn’t seem biased at all. It’s just an objective statement of fact

tsugu OP ,
@tsugu@slrpnk.net avatar

If you go to snapcraft.io, you can see snap being installed on many other distributions other than Ubuntu. It will not show you the exact numbers, but people willingly install it on their machines. I think that’s successful.

rtxn , (edited )

I don’t think “there exists an unknown number of non-Ubuntu machines with snap installed” is a valid metric when the general sentiment seems to be apathy. It’s popular for the same reason Internet Explorer was popular – it’s forcibly installed with the default OS.

If the numbers were favorable, Canonical would release them.

tsugu OP ,
@tsugu@slrpnk.net avatar

What is the “general sentiment” tho? Sure, on Lemmy and Reddit communities I usually see people hate Snaps, but that’s just a few thousands of people. Another metric of success could be developers maintaining their software as snaps. You will find that quite a lot of them do so.

rtxn ,

I said “apathy”, not “negative”. The people who dislike snap have likely moved to other distributions, and I don’t see any widespread praise considering Ubuntu’s market share within the Linux ecosystem, so the most likely answer is that people either don’t know or don’t care about snap.

Whether or not an application is packaged as a snap is also a poor indication. Most of the software used in Ubuntu still comes from an APT repo, mostly official or sometimes a PPA. Many developers distribute their software exclusively as flatpaks, appimages, or binaries. Shit, Valve even recommends against using the snap version of Steam. By using your standard, snap would be considered an abject failure.

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Snap doesn’t really even have as many applications packaged as people think. Snap’s package count is often touted as being much higher than Flatpak’s. However, this is misleading, as Snap allows the inclusion of many command-line interface (CLI) only packages that aren’t well-suited for containerization.
The inclusion of these CLI-only packages drastically inflates Snap’s overall package count, while Flatpak does not include as many standalone CLI tools.
Furthermore, packaging CLI tools as Snap or Flatpak packages doesn’t really make much sense. A huge amount of CLI tools were never intended to be used inside a containerized environment like Snap. As a result, there will likely be compatibility issues and unsupported edge cases.
Additionally, there are already established universal packaging standards for CLI tools, such as Nix and Homebrew. These packaging systems are better suited for distributing standalone CLI applications compared to containerized formats like Snap and Flatpak.

Jokes on Nintendo, my next handheld is most likely still going to be a steam deck (clone?). The only difference now is I won’t buy a physical game and emulate their games on it by (downloading) a backup.

I’m not proud of it but I’ve pirated games when I was a kid, but I bought every game I pirated if I could get it on modern hardware. Even the mediocre games like Minecraft.

It’s tempting as a kid when your parents gets you an Xbox but never got any games for it, eventually you wanna play more than demos. They got duke nukem forever with the xbox and as a kid I preferred the pack in game of Kinect adventures over it.

UnverifiedAPK ,

Definitely get a Deck, it’s shocking how powerful the hardware is. If price is an issue you can wait until the refurbished ones go on sale again and pick up the cheapest model for $280.

Fallenwout , to aboringdystopia in Being in the way of cars deserve to get you killed apparently

My policy is: if you are weaker, you have to be extra carefull and give way to the others.

Usually in this order: pedestrian < bicycle < motorcycle < car < truck

This has served me well. No reason to risk your life in competing even if you are in the right. Being in the right serves you nothing when you’re dead.

conditional_soup ,

You must always exercise safety and pragmatism, but that doesn’t mean that the “stronger” vehicle deserves the right of way more. I’d argue that the more dangerous the vehicle is, the greater the obligation to operate it with care and due regard for others.

indepndnt ,

I think both are true.

Leeker ,

I mean I’m pretty sure this is exactly why trucks over a certain tonnage require and additional license to operate. At least here in the US they do. I’m sure many other countries have something similar.

wildcherry OP ,

I mean, it makes sense from a self-preservation point of view. Too many are upholding this exact policy while driving though, which is what I’m pointing out. One could argue that the heavier / more dangerous you are, the more careful you want to be as well.

Smoogs ,

Exactly. laws are not armour. They are simply a deterrent at best.

Moneo ,

Yes, everyone should take precautions to keep themselves safe. Everyone should also advocate for safer roads and stiff penalties for vehicular violence.

ZC3rr0r ,

“I had the right of way” makes a terrible headstone slogan.

wildcherry OP ,

What about “I almost run over a cyclist so he attacked me with a hammer?”. One can only be so tolerant toward the constant threat of vehicular assault.

Hell I almost got ran over by some bitch a couple of days ago while walking on the sidewalk.

ZC3rr0r ,

I’m not saying or suggesting that it’s a pedestrian, cyclist, driver, or anyone else’s sole responsibility to stay safe. In fact, I strongly believe the “stronger” party has an outsized responsibility to make sure they act safely and not endanger other road users.

All I’m advocating for is for all participants to be vigilant and not assume right of way will be honored by the other party.

Ultimately, only you can keep you safe. Don’t assume anyone is flawless. Regardless of where you are driving a car, walking, cycling, etc. people can and will make mistakes, miss something, or forget to check.

wildcherry OP ,

Of course. I am not disputing it. What I’m pointing out (and tbh I found it especially pernicious where I live, I did not have the same feeling in Canada or Ireland or France outside of big cities - in those places, yes infrastructure can be better, but people are actually nice on the wheel), is that dangerous behavior are normalized for cardrivers. And I would not equate dangerous behavior of a pedestrian with one of a car. In the first case, I’m only endangering myself. It’s not smart and of course people should be careful. But it’s not the same as drunk driving, for example.

Like a few days ago I was walking on the sidewalk. Some seeyouhaynetee just backdrove into me from her parking. And it’s not an isolated incident, it’s common occurrence. ALL the cardrivers in my family are taking the wheel drunk. Its normal here.

ZC3rr0r ,

I think what is considered acceptable strongly depends on where you live to be honest. Driving while druk (a felony offense in most places) is extremely frowned upon by the general public. At least, it is where I live.

Although I do get where you are coming from in terms of other behaviors, there’s a reason traffic violations are the most ticketed offenses in just about any country.

w2tpmf ,

Being in the right serves you nothing when you’re dead.

My Dad taught me this concept at a young. He called it being “dead right”.

Yes you’re right, yes they’re in the wrong. You’re still dead.

So don’t worry about other people doing it right, worry about yourself and your own safety.

I got a taste of early “retirement” thanks to Covid. Being unemployed can be stressful, and having less money is also not great, but god it was amazing.

It hurt my finances a bunch, but it changed something in me for the better, and it changed my perspective on my career. Work is still important to support myself and my family, but it is not part of my identity and self worth.

Going months without my family, pets, and hobbies is simply not an option. But going months without work would be great to do again, if the money were not an issue. And I really like my new position and the company!

The more practical version of that is: fuck long hours, stress, and fighting for a promotion to managing or whatever. I’d get a bit more money but enjoy my life less.
