mysoulishome OP ,
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

IMO there is no reason to cling to the idea that feet and yards, Fahrenheit, pounds snd ounces, cups and pints make any sense.….it’s kind of embarrassing as an American. We should have just bit the bullet and switched 40 years ago but we are lazy and have no willpower.

We should start calling them freedom degrees and just own that we are stubborn for no reason.

errer ,

Using -10 - 40 as a range of temperatures experienced by humans makes way less sense than 0 - 100. We’re a base 10 species so it’s much better for regular use.

Metric aficionados rightly point out that the other measures are all nicely base 10, so why doesn’t that argument hold for temperature too? Celsius is inferior.

spacecowboy ,

Water boils at 100 celcius and freezes at zero. Most temp ranges are (~)-40 to +40 (for now). Each base 10 you speak of gets a slightly different outfit. It’s intuitive and easy to plan for.

null ,

Celsius definitely makes sense for gauging how you’ll feel at different temperatures if you’re water. Fahrenheit works better for human beings though.

spacecowboy ,

What? No way dude. 0 and below is freezing temperatures. Negative = cold. 0-10 requires light coat and maybe a beanie. 10-20 is sweater weather. 20-30 is t shirt weather. 30-40 is hot as fuck weather.

null ,

Or a simple scale from 0 - 100. 0 being extremely cold and 100 being extremely hot (from the perspective of a human being)

I live in a Celsius country and for the thermostat, we have to deal with decimals to fine tune the room temp. Flipped the thermostat to Fahrenheit and it instantly made more sense.

spacecowboy ,

Agree to disagree. 19.5 degrees inside is perfect.

null ,

Perfect at what?

Mouselemming ,

But you’re still using too-large chunks. Being comfortable requires finer tuning than C degrees, and I don’t like having to use a bunch of decimals or fractions either.

Edit: I see you like 19.5 which makes my point even though I prefer 72.

Igloojoe ,

Except when water doesnt boil or freeze at 0/100; Based off altitude or salinity and some other things. You dont need a whole temperature scale based off those 2 factors. Water will boil when it bubbles on the stove, and will freeze when it turns solid in the freezer. Kelvin is better for scientific numbering. Fahrenheit is better for daily life.

I will admit, distance and volume measuring is better metric. I’m so sick of having to play the math game of teaspoons to tablespoons to cups etc. Distance is easier too once you use it for a while. I bet you could ask a ton of people how far a mile is, and many wouldnt be able to give you distance in feet…

Sekoia ,

“The ranges experienced by humans” is extremely variable. My friends from hotter countries can barely handle 10°C, but are fine at 40°C, and it’s entirely the opposite for me.

I assure you that for regular use, Celsius works great. I don’t really think either is better than the other in practice (outside of chemistry), but “it’s the range people experience” is kinda bull. A 10 degree F difference from 0 to 10 is very different from 60 to 70.

Also, water freezing at 0°C (and boiling at 100°C, to a lesser degree) is quite convenient in everyday life. Just check for a minus sign and you know if it can freeze.

Hjalamanger ,
@Hjalamanger@feddit.nu avatar

Yes, and it’s not like you can’t experience temperatures that are not 0-100°F. Here in Sweden (and Finland) we have saunas, and I can assure you that there is a difference between 100 and say 110 Fahrenheit.

btw, is there any word for “being in a sauna” in English? In Swedish we would say “basta” , which is mentioned in our dictionary (in SAOL and SO but not in the SAOB article from 1901) but Google translate fails to translate it. We also have the longer form “bada bastu” that translates to “take a sauna” but I really prefer the shorter form.

Sekoia ,

I’m not aware of any word like that

slowwooderrunsdeep ,

American here too… I’m totally OK with switching to metric as long as we keep Fahrenheit for weather. It just makes so much more sense.

vector_zero ,

IMO it’s not even about something making sense, we’re just very accustomed to fahrenheit, so it feels more natural to us.

I’ll be the first to admit that I have no idea about what’s warm and cold in Celsius. I know 0 is quite cold, 20 is room temperature, and 100 is near instant death.

echodot ,

20 is a hot room, 15 is room temperature

10 - 30 is average for most weather in moderate parts of the world 5 - 10 is it cold night <3 and you have snow 50 would be a desert

Lokoschade ,

15°C is way too cold as room temperature, 18 - 20°C is the minimum at which I’m comfortable

rivalary ,

22-23 is where I’m comfortable.

echodot ,

Depends on the weather.

If it was 23 outside that would be hot. I don’t want it that hot, my body is acclimatised to cooler temperatures.

(American)

My family is always surprised that I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving (though I do like to eat). Maybe it has something to do with the fact that everyone is Christian, right-wing, straight and hateful - and vocal about it, while I am gay, satanic, soft-spoken and not right-wing. Maybe it’s because I see celebrating the day where we ‘gifted’ natives items that would knowingly harm and kill them, and even centuries later we’d still be trying to eradicate their people, freedoms, rights, history, land…

Nah, it’s definitely because I’m a godless heathen who likes gagging on guys. Most absolutely. More gravy with your confederate flag napkins, aunty? I’m so glad you brought enough for everyone.

I don’t think the typhoid blankets your referring to (at least that’s what I assume you meant by “gifts that would harm them”) were specifically given on the “first” thanksgiving, but you’re absolutely right that it happened. Even if the first thanksgiving was 100% as advertised (which it probably wasn’t) then it was a short-lived and tiny amount of human decency in what was otherwise a straight up genocide. Nevermind that the story was more about the natives helping the settlers than vice-versa, so really we’re just celebrating the time our victims were nice to us while we were still getting ramped up on eradicating their people

As a straight man and while I also don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, I don’t think your gayness should be a reason to not celebrate a holiday with straight people. Your gayness would be as welcome as my straightness on my table.

Edit: I honestly don’t understand why I am being down voted. Op expressed how they are straight and he is gay, as if that is the issue. It is not. It sounds to me as if they were bigots and pushy with their sexuality. They could be gay like him and they still could be bigots and making him uncomfortable with being too pushy with their sexuality. In other words, I tried to express that he should draw the line at sexuality but at bigots.

Moreso ‘awkward dinner table questioms’ and ‘quick glances to others’. I remember very vividly throughout my teen years that I wanted so desperately to reveal my orientation and (assuming everything went well) get reassurance and validation and yada yada. Every single time I was thinking about it, weighing the risks, someone would say some vile comment about a character on the show we had on, or a snarky question under the assumption that I shared their views, or whatever.

My parents are such a mixed bag; they can be really great caretakers, but fuck me if they can’t be the most dreadful, racist, and condescending people too. My extended family is that but even more.

I came out after a stroke at 21 that I wasn’t supposed to live through. When I did, it was in a therapy (physical, occupational, speech) setting. When my father asked me, “why [did you pick to tell us] here?”, my response was “because if you started to beat me, help is just down the hall [nurses, security]”.

It’s not the divide between who we like to sleep with, but the fact that my (extended) family has very… strong views, and it - along with my changing religious views, and other big factors - pushed me away from them, to solitude. Gatherings of people I don’t like, don’t trust, who think poorly on me because what I think when one passes, or what people and activities I want in my private spaces, enrage me deeply.

I’m glad that it’s not like that everywhere, but damn, I’m surrounded on all sides from where I stand. :(

It's clear that much of the work on this game was done by like 30 different companies.

Every single thing about it feels disjointed, disconnected, half assed and schizophrenic.

And then when you go into NG+, it makes all that feel like childs play and gets really stupid.

It links into conversations in some places, but not in others where it would make actualy sense.

You can opt to not tell Constelation you're Starborn and then instantly take them into space on your alien spaceship without a single question asked by any of them.

They'll comment on your powers, long before you're at the part of the main quest where you normally get them.

All the dialogue and relationships are even blander than the actual main story, which seems to have been written by some Tumblr jackass that was so shit they even got rejected by The Witcher tv-show writing staff.

If Bethesda had just said "hey, we created this space framework and now it's up to modders to make an actual game out of this", I could've respected that.

It would've been more honest than delivering this disjointed mess of a game.

Another big annoyance I've had with Starfield is that they broke one of the sacred rules of Bethesda games with it.

In the past, if you stumbled upon something while exploring, killed or solved it, then went to someone who had a quest related to what you did, they would acknowledge you already did what they wanted you to do and you could move on.

In Starfield, they hide, lock and don't even spawn quite a lot of things, so you can only find them, if you're sent to them by a quest giver.

This game that is all about freedom and exploration has almost all relevant content that isn't flavor locked away behind being told to go somewhere, rather than exploring the star systems and finding them.

WintLizard ,
@WintLizard@sopuli.xyz avatar

Bro thats a pretty big main quest spoiler to drop unmarked

Endorkend ,
@Endorkend@kbin.social avatar

The main quest is utterly irrelevant and a detriment to the rest of the game.

The whole game would've been better without that main quest even existing.

And knowing what happens has no relevance to the game you play, especially since it makes the rest of the game completely irrelevant if you dare finish the main quest.

That's the point. It's meaningless to the point of it making the game worse by even existing.

And that's without the issues I mentioned originally, where while it's just utter shit, it's also really badly integrated.

jjjalljs ,

The main quest has been a detriment to the game since like Oblivion.

dingus ,
@dingus@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m going to just shit out my ultimate unpopular opinion right here, in mild defense of Endorkend, thanks.

If a plot point is enough to ruin a story, it was not a well written story to begin with.

Stories live and die through character development and growth. Weak stories often rely on things like twists and unexpected plot turns. Strong stories can often have these elements, but they don’t lean on them.

Strong stories I return to again and again, because the story is strong even though I already know the story. Knowing the story doesn’t ruin repeat watches/plays/readings of the media if the story is successful at being a good story. Well written stories with deep, interesting characters achieve that.

I’ve been playing Starfield and it has somehow worse writing and voice acting than a lot of previous Bethesda titles, which is saying a lot because it’s not like they’re not well known for weak writing at this point. It has a lot of strengths that have been kind of overlooked because it’s just generally kind of boring, but it does have them. Those strengths are not in the storytelling.

I don’t think this plot point spoils the game at all, instead it reveals how utterly weak the narrative they’ve crafted is.

WintLizard ,
@WintLizard@sopuli.xyz avatar

I mean I’m at the point where I just met the starborn, and speculating with my partner on who they are has been a lot of fun. I was really looking forward to finding out. It is kind of a bummer to just have someone drop it in a random comment in a thread about the romance plots.

dingus ,
@dingus@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s legit a bummer, friend. I guess what I should have also said is: art is subjective. My take doesn’t make it true (it’s just like, my opinion, man), but I think that while it’s a bummer for you, if you really think it’s a good game, it won’t stop you from enjoying it for a long time. I hope you do.

    Moral high ground depends on social pressure from uninvolved parties shaming or otherwise negatively affecting the bully. Usually this shaming does not occur, or is otherwise ignored by the bully resulting in no negative outcomes for their bad behavior.

    The concept of ‘moral high ground’ is itself ironically better at shaming the victims into allowing the abuse to continue, with uninvolved parties often coming down harder on the victim than the bully.

    What kind of person takes more offense to the defense of victims than the original crime? -> criminals

    Well, don’t leave us hanging, were there further entries?

    randomsnark ,

    It’s a fictional diary entry, from The Prestige. The next entry is 2 months later, when he’s fallen in love with a different woman.

    Varyk ,

    From the movie The prestige? Like a screen grab?

    decerian ,

    Probably the novel on which the movie was based.

    Varyk ,

    Oh I didn’t know that was based on a novel, thanks! But that entry must be meant to be hilarious, was the novel comedic?

    decerian ,

    I haven’t actually read the novel version, just seen the movie enough times to know this wasn’t in it and that there was a novel

    Varyk ,

    Okay cool

    hedgehogging_the_bed ,

    The novel is made extra strange by a modern day framing story starting the last living ancestors of the two magicians. I read it 20+ years ago and remembered it as a strange book. The movie was excellent and made the whole story make much more sense overall.

    Varyk ,

    Oh what? Interesting, That’s making the novel sound more interesting to me. It’s funny, I coincidentally watched the movie again for the first time since it came out just a couple weeks ago.

    Thanks

    hedgehogging_the_bed ,

    It’s not bad, the modern frame doesn’t even really change the feel of the story, although the way the rest of the story is presented is also complicated. I recommend reading it, especially if you’ve seen the movie and enjoyed it.

    I was grateful the movie simplified the presentation so that you could really focus on the underlying interesting bits. I left the novel still a little confused as to WTF was going on some regards and the movie makes the essential plot reveals much easier to follow.

    Varyk ,

    Okay, cool. I kind of wish I waited to watch the movie a little longer now, and appreciate your take on the book.

    can ,

    Thank you for the closure.
