If you guys really wanted to let Spez know how mad you are you would STOP GOING TO REDDIT… Every time “fuck spez” shows up on this page it just means a bunch of people got on Reddit and boosted their numbers which makes them look more valuable to investors for the IPO.
Do I really need to remind you that Spez or anyone else who works for Reddit COULD TAKE THIS DOWN AT LITERALLY ANYTIME THEY FEEL LIKE IT?
Every time you go there and write “fuck spez” I’m sure he goes to sleep crying into the giant pile of money he sleeps on
I’ll say it once more, if you want Spez to pay DO NOT GO ON REDDIT EVEN TO TELL HIM WHAT A FUCKING ASSHOLE HE IS, THAT IS LITERALLY EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTS YOU TO DO
This doesn’t make alot of sense to me. Doubt all that was created by Lemmy users that logged in to reddit-that’s simply Reddit users? Can’t be good for Reddit that this is going on such a large scale. And if nothing else … Great amusement lol
Trying to convert those metrics into revenue is what started this whole thing in the first place. If they were so effective at turning any engagement to their advantage, we’d still all be engaging there via whatever third party app we were using before they got disabled.
Have you tried to actually go to r/place? You can’t even view the page on your phone unless you’re using their garbage official app. It’s definitely meant to try and increase app engagement
See I think you have it twisted. We need a good mix of both.
If site traffic plummets thats bad for Spez, if place is a giant “fuck spez” banner and it gets reported on by tech news and legitimate financial news its also bad for spez.
If investors look at the blackout and the desperate scrambling for volunteers to mod subs, and a traffic decline AND the fact that the administration cant seem to do anything about some members turning place into a monkey shit fight at the zoo… Some of them might just realise that Reddit is a very risky investment.
I still say if this wasn’t exactly what the corporate management of Reddit wanted, then it would have been taken down by now though.
Why else would it exist? They’ve already proven that they won’t hesitate to censor/destroy anything that’s not in line with their plans for the IPO, so it doesn’t make sense that this one thing would be beyond their control in any way whatsoever.
See, my crippled ass is going to squeeze through anyway. Even if that means the metal clasps on my shoulder bag grind against the vehicle, or even if the attachment point for the strap on my cane happens to dig in if I happen to stumble because of the tight space.
Will that result in dents and scrapes? Absolutely. Do I care? Absolutely not.
My non-crippled ass would possibly also have some issues. I might trip with my keys in my hand or something worse. Who’s to know what dangers parking like this could pose.
I’ll add that NewPipe is a great app, has a fork to support sponsorblock and can mix your YouTube subscription with other sources (eg. PeerTube), which could allow for a smooth transition.
You have to be willing to loose your personalized suggestions page, but when it comes to me it helped a lot to get less addicted.
Losing personalized suggestions was a plus for me, since youtube is so thrown off by one video and even when it recommends channels that fit into the genre you like it doesn’t seem to be able to understand why it is that you like certain channels.
For instance, video games. It should know not to recommend channels that don’t have really loud youtubers who are screaming at me to smash the like button and have the most obnoxious thumbnails. But, it just sees that I like games. And then it is horrible for spoilers where I might watch a video for a game review I’m interested in then next it does is start filling my feed with spoiler content from that video.
Yeah it’s the same for me. When I watch Youtube on my computer I often feel like I wasted a lot of time. On my phone I can only pick high quality content from the curated list of creators that I’ve maintained over the years, and it is a much better experience.
In 12 years, selfhosting will be so cheap and one-push-button easy that everyone will have their own instance and federated with each other. It will be called Neo-Geocities 2.0.
Well, not really the same thing but I saw this the other day. I think it is awesome, but that is probably only nostalgia talking. It is a geocities website for the current day!
Generally, I’m against violence towards journalists - but dishonest and manipulative headlines like this tend to make me reconsider my stance, if but for a moment.
We had the periodic table in huge letters on the wall of our chemistry classroom. Wouldbe difficult to not allow students to use it during tests.
One of my nursing school teachers used to say “You don’t have to know everything, you just have to know where to look it up.” I always thought that’s very good and practical advice.
So during the test the teacher listed element names out loud with no pauses, and you were supposed to write down the symbol while she was speaking, and then another list in reverse. After the last element we had to immediately put the pens down. Whole test took ~45 seconds for 30 elements.
This was so that it was impossible to read from the big table on the wall, you had no time to look away from the paper. You’d miss the next 3 elements by the time you looked away to find the one.
Not really. As a former math teacher, I used to have kids do speed drill quizzes very similar to that elements chart drill a couple times a week. As in how many basic facts, (addition, subtraction. multiplication and division), with the correct answer can you do in one minute. There are just some basic skills you really need to learn and master before you can move on and learn how to blow things up.
The point of the quiz was not to expect you to get them all correct all the time or even get to the end of the quiz, (I was aiming for 30 correct answers in that one minute out of maybe 60 or 70 problems). But the idea was to build a very basic skill set for you. And so that you wouldn’t be afraid of the numbers, (this is a real stress point for students), and to lessen the fear of learning and adding to your skills by eliminating the stress of where to start. If you confidently know what 7x3 is, that’s one less detail you need to work out and worry over when doing a math problem, (another stress point for students).
Education methods sometimes seem dry and useless and even mean to a young student. But they do actually have thought and reason behind the why a teacher might do something. I could never be bothered to try and teach you something that was pointless. I simply didn’t have the time for that kind of effort. Nor do the vast majority of teachers in a classroom.
So hardware manifacturers need to adapt to XOrg now? LOL the reason that some apps dont scale right even on Plasma is that they are probably not Wayland native yet.
And GNOME still doesnt have stable fractional scaling, unlike Plasma.
Hardware vendors shouldnt need to adapt to GNOME too.
Agreed. HiDPI is the way to go and we should appreciate Framework for putting that in their laptops instead of continuing the use of shitty 1366x768 screens.
Xorg is the reason why OP is facing the scaling issues. OP, try to force the apps to run on native Wayland if they support it but don’t default to it. The Wayland page on Arch wiki has instructions on that. Immensely improved my HiDPI experience.
I finally stopped having problems on Wayland plasma after the release some months ago that included fixes to fractional scaling. Me after many months and years complaining about wayland not working properly now can say that I can barely notice the difference and things work as expected. Had to cry to make discord and zoom work for screen share and zoom still crashes but at least kinda works. But that’s different than blurry fonts at least 😅
1 Avoirdupois Ounce (oz) = 28.3 grams
1 Troy Ounce (Troy oz) = 31.1 grams
A troy ounce weighs about 10% more compared to an ounce, which makes a big difference when it comes to precious metals.
1 Troy ounce = 1.097 ounce
When I worked at the pizza shop long ago we had this regular customer who every time we delivered to would call and say something was wrong. She did it every single time she ordered and yelled at us but continued ordering anyway. One night she called to make her order which was always a pizza, some hot wings and a salad and we knew that she was going to call back so we made double triple sure everything was okay. Lo and behold she called again complaining that her salad had no olives, onions or anything. It was just lettuce. I knew exactly what the problem was so I drove all the way to her apartment. Told her to hand me the salad so I could fix it and she said just give me the right one and I said just hand me the salad so she gave it to me. I flipped it over, opened it, showed it to her and she slammed the door in my face. That was a good night.
So frustrating. False issue complaints waste everyone’s time and make good people potentially doubt their work. And they disincentivize businesses from offering no hassle return/fix policies.
And they lead to cynicism and a “can’t be arsed” attitude. After all, if I know people are going to complain about my work no matter how much time and energy I put into perfecting it, why would I even bother? And now, every time I get a complaint phone call, there’s going to be a seed of doubt in my mind, maybe this person is just trying to get free shit, at the expense of me
But now seriously, I'll try to address your misconceptions:
That's not a haiku
It is.
it needs to be 5, 7, 5
Not really. That's like the definition for kids in school, simple but not 100% accurate. There's plenty of haiku with different metrics, even single syllable lines.
not 6, 7, 4
I count 5-7-4.
The separation of lines matter
Iirc in Japanese haiku are written in one line.
You are kind of right tho. I think it sounds better like 'He just kicked him out' but I was trying to making it just taking out words from the original post.
You are right on the counting. Thanks for the correction! I must've read '-dia-' as a diphthong, I don't think I've ever said 'pediatrician' out loud until now. Still a haiku anyways.
And that tune, almost none of the haiku fit the melody! For singing you have to take into account the accents and on beats. Don't get me wrong I had a good chuckle and may or might not start doing it myself but as a rule of thumb to recognize (or gatekeep) haiku is not the best.
I don’t think I’ve ever expressed this anywhere, but I don’t even consider that place to be a stopped clock. Always saw it as a random number generator with no brakes, which is why all the bad shit gets amplified when it wouldn’t breathing room elsewhere.
I used to like the musical discussions on there, way way back, and the conversations were pretty interesting.
Yeah 4chan is basically just the chaotic form of social media. Near absolute anonymity and essentially no rules as to what you can post will result in some rancid shit, but also is just as capable of pretty good content.
