Coming out of the closet to some select folk tends to elicit way more blindsided surprise then seems reasonable given I don’t think I could look more stereotypical enby if I tried. My conclusion is cis people in general are pretty trans blind outside of the binary. Infra and Ultra gender sounds about right.

I worked at Lowe’s for a little over a year. They constantly assigned me about 3-4 times the amount of work a human can do. They absolutely would not listen to me when I told them it was too much. They kept saying to do these tasks “in my downtime”.

I never had a minute of downtime. Every shift I was scrambling at 100 mph to get things done, and it never let up.

They just kept calling me in to talk about my performance, and when I’d say it was impossible they’d just say “it’s up to you to find the time”.

I eventually got fired, and thank god. My own self respect was dwindling the longer I put up with it. I should have quit, but didn’t have the courage to.

force ,

I can definitely be wrong, but since the US has a lot more of a veteran obsession culture than other countries there are probably laws that give companies major benefits (like idk tax credits) for hiring veterans, so they gain more for hiring those useless employees than they lose.

Drusas ,

American employment applications typically ask if you are a veteran. Also if you are disabled. It helps them check boxes to prove that they don't discriminate. Not sure what other benefits they get, but possibly something when it comes to veterans.

Mirshe ,

I BELIEVE you can gain certain tax breaks if you can prove that a certain percentage of your workforce is veterans or disabled people.

At the very least, I’m OK with it. Leveraging my autism diagnosis has gotten me a few positions in the past from employers wanting to tick those EEOC boxes.

This is basically just as opaque as a charity or HOA, with different steps. Which is great unless your community is poor.

My contention with this concept is that with taxes, I can vote for people that manage both the money gathering rules and how it is spent. That and the money typically works in a much larger pool spread across a wide range of socioeconomic groups, which can vastly improve its reach and capability. On top of all that, it’s also transparent. My guess is this has no such features.

Potatos_are_not_friends ,

Right, that’s the whole point of HOAs. They do all the same shit local government does, but without needing to share with the poors. They should be illegal.

No, they negotiate a bulk price with with contractors and pay them.

Reddit was originally gonna do a per-user recommendation engine, and then it kinda never happened. Might be technically-possible for someone to do one. Classify content (download submitted webpages, run text classifier on them, download images, run image classifier like Stable Diffusion’s Clip Interrogator on them), then look at what things get upvoted and what gets downvoted.

snooggums ,
@snooggums@midwest.social avatar

So, sub to the ones you come across that you like, then browse your subs most of the time and just check All occasionally to see if something new catches your eye.

That’s how I used reddit and it worked out great.

I feel I want three sections in my app: one for all, one for a selection of subscribed communities, one for ‘most’ with a bunch of communities blocked. Maybe I should just use multiple accounts and flip between.

Or* a second subscribed feed with a larger subscription list, so my smaller list of niche communities doesn’t get drowned out.

PraiseTheSoup ,

It’s “opp” with two p’s but it’s short for “operative”, a word with one p? I’m starting to think that you don’t really know either.

Vespair , (edited )

Yeah and “rizz” comes from charisma but isn’t spelled “ris.”

And “OP” has multiple existing potential meanings still in common use today, so it makes sense to me to spell it with flair for the sake of clarity.

Slang is complex and morphs as it travels though; so do some folks use opp as “opponent”? Sure, that’s believable. But I feel fairly confident (never fully confident; I am fallible after all) that it’s original use comes from AAVE and more specifically hip-hop, where I again feel pretty damn confident it refers to an operative and not an opponent.

If I am wrong though, I would love to be corrected (with some verification of some kind) so I can be sure to reconcile the new info and not spread misinformation again. I’ll happily await your evidence to that end.

Ottomateeverything ,

so do some folks use opp as “opponent”? Sure, that’s believable. But I feel fairly confident…

Bro, it doesn’t even have the right number of P’s for your reasoning to make any sense.

It comes from “opponent,” that’s why there are two P’s. It comes from video games/chess/card games/etc where you refer to the person or persons you’re playing against as the “opponent”. It’s been happening for many years but has made it’s way into gen z slang.

Vespair , (edited )

Perhaps there’s a case of parallel development here, but I really don’t think that’s what happened.

Gamer slang has long borrowed, sometimes sincerely sometimes ironically, from AAVE and hip-hop slang, where I truly believe this originates, and clearly has the cop/fed connotation. Yeah, I know people shorthand “opp” as opponent in games in the same way they shorthand everything, but jesus christ that’s more approaching 1337 5p35k customs than gen z/alpha slang, so even if we do assume parallel development and concede opp=opponent in modern gamer slang it almost certainly is pretty unrelated to said archaic use and was likely homespun in zoomer/alpha games like Roblox or Amung Us or whatever they’re playing now instead.

But hey, while I remain unconvinced I am proud to accept my fallibility and ask everyone to remember that I am just some stranger online when weighing the weight of my opinion and to draw your own conclusion on the matter. I do not claim to speak gospel.

Fluffy_Ruffs ,

Vespair ,

This makes vastly more sense in both gamer and hip-hop context than “opponent” does, so I’m willing to concede that this might actually be the right reading, as retroactively this fits in place of “operative” in the hip-hop settings I’ve experienced it in whereas opponent doesn’t.

Kudos.

Fenrisulfir ,

don ,

The last p, well… that’s not that simple. It’s sorta like another way to call a cat kitten. As for the ladies, OPP means something gifted: the first two letters are the same but the last is something different; it’s another five letter word rhymin’ with cleanest and meanest.
