I installed it on bare metal in Arch Linux, cause it’s more fun that way.

You’re a monster…

Tja ,

I also did it back when next cloud demanded a version of php that wasn’t yet in the Arch repos. Fun times.

Running a Docker container now.

There’s a lot of us neurodivergent folks in tech because it suits our needs better than a lot of other fields, and a lot of us just love technology

We’re more prone to being LGBTQIA+ than neurotypical folks, scientifically documented

Makes sense tech would have more trans folks as a result, we pad the numbers a lil bit

This is of course a generalization and actual ND/LGBTQIA+ presence is going to vary based on job, location, how insufferable management is, etc, and not all NDs are LGBTQIA+ and vice versa.

blazeknave ,

Gender is a neurotypical construct

DaPorkchop_ ,

…are you trying to imply that all neurodivergent people are LGBT+?

plistig ,

I guess they are saying that everyone is queer, actually, but only neurodivers people are aware of that.

blazeknave ,

I wasn’t saying the latter but that’s an interesting idea. Not the former per se- the cis heteronormative gender and sexuality binary is bullshit and only exists bc religion (capitalism… moar serfs in fields) and generations of fear. There’s tons of fluidity in earlier civilizations and more in nature.

I’d just like to hear some comments from all the downvoters. Odd thing to get so defensive about Lemmy

Something I’ve been for a while now is why this gender disparity is so strong in this specific area of engineering compared to all other engineering areas. People seem to claim it’s because of the “geek” stereotype, but that seems more like a symptom than a cause and I fail to see how it enforces this disparity, considering there’s nothing preventing a woman from being a geek too.

CancerMancer ,

In countries like India and China where women are less free to choose quality of life and human connections over money, a lot more of them go into IT.

KillingTimeItself ,

the actual reason? Nobody pushes women into the field of CS. Back in the 80s and 90s it was a similar thing, boys were fucking around with computers and software, not girls, it was considered to be a boys thing back then, and it still is now, because women are moving more frequently into higher expertise fields more often than not. CS while incredibly complicated, and difficult, is also just code monkey simulator at the end of the day. You could just write a PHD thesis on some mathematical shit and be as involved with CS while having been a mathematician instead lmao.

That’s my guess at least.

Anticorp ,

Nobody pushed me into this field, I followed it because I liked it. Same thing with kids messing around with computers in the 80’s. Nobody was pushing boys to do that, they just did. For some reason more men enjoy working with computers than women. I’ve worked with a few female coders, and they were good at their jobs, but women are definitely a minority in the field.

watersnipje ,

I probably would have gone into tech earlier if I’d had a female role model in tech. When my (male) friends started programming in high school, I was very interested and wanted to learn it too. But it literally didn’t occur to me that I could, until ten years later, when I was already far along in a study in the humanities. I ended up in data/ software development in the end, but it took me ten years longer because I didn’t realise earlier that it was a field I could get into if I wanted.
So long story short, it’s not just a matter of interest, there are societal factors that play a role too.

rottingleaf ,

May have something to do with computers as they exist being defined by male psychology. Well, it’s understandable why swords, guns, rockets are, and same with computers.

Basically sending instructions to change state. I don’t know how can a computer exist which doesn’t work like this and is still usable for the humanity, but this seems to be psychologically a bit more of a male thing. Maybe there’s nothing problematic for women but aesthetics there.

If it’s something deeper, then maybe some analog optical\quantum\whatever computers of the future will push us to change paradigms for some drastic change in efficiency. And maybe those new paradigms will be more appealing to women.

laughterlaughter ,

Which is ironic, because women were the “code monkeys” of back when human computers were a thing - humans actually doing the computing by hand; and most of them were women.

I’m still using Nextcloud, have been for only 2-3 years, but it’s getting to the point where I’m more annoyed about it than appreciating the usefulness

It’s not just being slow, it issues with the install. I’m pretty sure these days I’d be better of with specialized individual services than this one monster that die absolutely nothing well. It still can’t even sync files on Android ffs. I’d consider this core functionality.

Strykker ,

I haven’t had issues with syncing files on android. File sync is literally the only feature I use, so I should probably look for a simpler solution.

Now upgrading the fucking thing is a nightmare, not sure if me using docker images makes it worse or better though.

Creat ,

Unless something changed in the last few weeks, Android app can’t do bidirectional folder sync like you’re used to from Google drive, Dropbox or one drive. You can mark a folder for “sync”, but try copying something into it, it changing an existing file: no change on the server. I think you can manually open the app, navigate to the folder and open the menu to “sync”, but what the hell is the point in having it marked to be synced then? I wanted to use it for my keepass DB for example, where that would be a requirement.

Yes, updates are a nightmare. I’m not on docker (also not sure if better or worse) and every 2nd update sometime significantly breaks that I have to fix manually. Last time, the “group folders” plugin (official, from the Nextcloud devs) broke it so bad that Nextcloud wouldn’t even start. I had to go into maintenance mode, disable the plug-in (“app” I guess it’s the term?), update it from console, re-enable it, disable maintenance mode. Not pictured: finding out what the god damn problem was this time. I’ve just about had it…

ikidd ,

Just use the docker AIO image.

Strykker ,

I do, and if you accidentally skip a version when updating it the stupid thing bricks itself, what kind of stupid software can’t handle multiple make version updates.

Had to manually reset the version it thinks it was at and roll back to a older sticker image and update one version at a time until I caught up.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

This one? It was only started a couple years ago, I’m not even sure there’s been multiple major version changes since it was put out and generally available.

Creat ,

I wish tried it. The thing implied twice and I had to start from scratch. Not exactly “smooth”. Went to a full manual install, which is better but still very far from “good” or “stable”.

Count042 ,

We’ll see if your reading comprehension liabilities extend to self-hosting.

Seafile is extremely easy to set up and does one thing and one thing well.

It does store your data as binaries, so it would be a bit harder to restore than Nextcloud due to that, but I’ve never had an issue with seafile.

Of course, I didn’t have a problem with Nextcloud until an upgrade borked the installation bad enough that even restoring from backup couldn’t solve the issue.

psivchaz ,

SyncThing has been great for me. I tried NextCloud and OwnCloud first, granted years ago, and they were not great. So I’ve been using SyncThing at least 5 years now.

Creat ,

It doesn’t really fill all the basic use cases I have either unfortunately. But it will probably be my fall back, yes.

Works great until you have to update and you don’t know you have to do fancy stuff not to break things. I didn’t know I had to follow special instructions until things stopped working, and even then I couldn’t get it to update and it’s all borked now.

What else works for people lately just for the cloud files part?

fristislurper ,
@fristislurper@feddit.nl avatar

filebrowser.org just exposes a filesystem you point it at. Never had problems wit this. For syncing you can use syncthing.

milicent_bystandr ,

I nearly ditched nextcloud fully for this, but haven’t found anything that matches the convenience of nextcloud for family members iPhone

Also filebrowser doesn’t yet let you share folders that people can upload to, nor have good photo viewing in a shared folder

I’ve used it about as long, and I’ve never seen it as easy to maintain as the AIO container strategy they’re on now. It’s effortless, and after years of failed updates and rolling shit back via occ, it’s night and day. Even NCPi wasn’t as bulletproof.

One floor of my office building is a very well known gaming company. They’ve been remote since I started my job in 2021, but they have started coming into the office recently. I’d say 75% of the people I’ve seen get off at that floor have appeared to me to be LGBT+.
