I feel like YouTube has gone back to normal now. I used to need to update uBlock (origin) manually few times a day but I havenβt needed to do that for weeks now.
YouTube keeps buffering and skipping short sections of videos for me on PC with uBlock origin. Iβm so confused since apparently AdBlock Plus which I donβt use was responsible for the whole buffering thing and now Iβm here and wondering wtf is wrong with my setup
Yeah my videos sometimes skips forward a few seconds aswell but it doesnβt happen often enough to be an issue. Assuming you have other extensions disabled for youtube and if youβre on FIrefox; remember to also turn off the enhanced tracking protection for YouTube (shield icon at the address bar while you have youtube open)
I do have Firefox although on LibreWolf I didnβt experience those problems a few weeks ago. Thanks Iβll check! I also have Enhancer for YouTube as a plugin so I can set custom speeds etc for videos but I disabled its ad blocker and use ublock for that. Wasnβt a problem on Librewolf either but Iβll try to look into it. Thanks!
Well I did get the warning several times while using Firefox + uBlock Origin and I had to manually go update the βquick fixesβ filters in order to get it to work again. I did have other add-ons for YouTube aswell but no other adblockers.
One of the best things I did on my Linux laptop was adding auto gain filters to Pipewire through Easy Effects to automatically tune every audio to the same volume.
And if I want to get the dynamic range back itβs easy to temporarily turn off.
That actually works to my favor for podcasts. I download everything on wifi so I donβt have to use data, and the audio player audipo shows the waveform of the audio. So when the ad sections come up itβs easy to see how far to skip.
Fossify is not even in the play store. I searched for it online and found the GitHub repo, itβs only available via f-droid and IzzyOnAndroid, so yeah, you canβt find it in the Google play store.
This is my general method to find and install apps:
First hit F-Droid
If F-Droid doesnβt have it, hit the Play Store through Aurora. Carefully assess each and every candidate returned by the Play Store search by searching for feedback on DDG, as I treat anything served up by Google as adware / spyware even if the Play Store says itβs free of ads, doesnβt need permissions or itβs open source.
If the Play Store doesnβt have it (an older version of an APK I specifically need for instance) hit APKPure or Aptoide. Download each promising APK manually, unzip it, look for sketchy things in the archive manually, then run the APK through Hypatia before sideloading it, because I treat anything served up by APKPure or Aptoide as malware.
Youβll find one right at the top of your home page, then the moment you tap on a video, itβll be preceded by an infamous unskippable ad. mapquest directions
Sponsorblock can be janky to set up. If you set it up wrong it either doesnβt skip or skips unrelated parts. I had to actually double check how to properly set it up.
Iβd imagine most people would give up instead of double checking.
SponsorBlock is IMO not that hard to set up, and I havenβt even seen YouTube actively fight against its use; the problem is that the sponsor segment timestamps are community-sourced, which means 1) they might not yet be submitted by the time you watch a recently published video and 2) theyβre often very lazily done (but of course both are better than nothing).
Itβs basically just one button press that is βYeah I wanna skip stuffβ and if you press the wrong button because most people donβt FUCKING READ you might mess up your settings
My workplace disabled extensions today, and Iβm just mindblown by the amount of ads Iβve been blissfully ignorant about. I play music from youtube while working, but every time Iβm in a good flow now, getting stuff done, thereβs an ad-break that takes me out of that flow. Tiring having to work up that momentum all the time.
