BottleOfAlkahest , to risa in Literally heartbroken over here

So I’m not really a star trek fan but can someone explain to me what the fuck the lesson was supposed to be other than Archer is an irredeemable monster? Cause that episode seems to be trying to say something and it doesn’t seem to be that all people should have basic worth/rights.

Grayox OP ,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

I feel like it just showed that those responsible for the wrong thing happening often lash out at those that were trying to do the right thing, I wouldn’t have come to this conclusion if it wasn’t for Tripp telling Archer that it wasn’t his fault while he was chewing him out, and Archer didn’t even acknowledge him saying it because he knew that it was his fault, not Tripp’s, that Charles was dead.

BradleyUffner ,

My fiance and I just finished watching all of Enterprise and were discussing this too. We got the impression that the writers and producers really wanted us to like Archer and think he was a good guy, but we both decided that he’s really just an inconsistent asshole.

JWBananas ,
@JWBananas@lemmy.world avatar

People like to say that Kirk is the reason that the rules are so much more strict for Picard.

But Archer is the reason that they’re so much more strict for Kirk.

USSBurritoTruck ,
@USSBurritoTruck@startrek.website avatar

Man, I love the bit where Archer is already force feeding Trip a plate of shit for giving a person kept in sexual slavery a glimpse of a better life, and to add insult to injury he’s all, “And on top of it all, now the Vissian couple will have to wait to be able to conceive.”

Archer is the worst captain.

StillPaisleyCat ,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Archer being the worst captain, while being on track to becoming a founder of the Federation etc. was what made me bail on the show for a long time.

I really came to loathe Archer, and writing T’Pol as having respect for him really damaged her character over time.

Grayox OP ,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

I think thats because he is making logical decisions, we hate that makes her respect him I’m still at the tail end of season 2, so I’m ready for my disdain to grow. Plus he is a nepo baby.

Magnetar ,

logical decisions

T’Pol: Captain, we found a new M-class planet. We should proceed very carefully step by step, let’s start with scanning -

Archer: Boooring! Who’s coming with me camping on the unexplored world? Leave the protective equipment, bring beer! Last one on the shuttle is a stupid vulcan!

Grayox OP ,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

Lmao forgot about that episode, so fucking true.

xkforce ,

What the writers were trying to convey is that meddling with other cultures can have serious negative consequences (the person trip tried to help killed themselves, relations with starfleet were very negatively affected etc) but it doesnt come off that way. It comes off as shitty society sexually enslaves people after brainwashing them to think thats normal and once they find out that it isnt for other cultures, they want no part in it. So Archer comes off as an uncaring dick for scolding trip for trying to do what he thought was right. And beyond that, it makes trek’s non-interference policy look like a really bad idea when applied with no regard to the context. Which has been a longstanding issue in the series. i.e the prime directive is problematic.

Do DeDRM, and yet they host their code on GitHub and have a link directly to PayPal in the README for funding? Are these guys trying to get sued?

Yeah, after the yuzu debacle, if I were anywhere close to the gray side of piracy I would pull down any and all links to funding.

I’m not sure how you would actually get that necessary funding - maybe through discord links periodically?

Just to commenting to keep the knowledge: There are other projects that can de-drm audible. Amazon probably knows this and tolerates it. In fact, a long time ago all downloads on Linux did not have DRM. Those days are gone, but this github.com/mkb79/audible-cli should work.

As soon as you have ‘activation bytes’ many tools can play and convert the downloads.

I was slightly okay with Audible’s DRM when the credits you got each month stacked with the older ones, so you could have 4 over the months as you still listened to the books you already had, and then exchange them for newer books of the series and what not.

And then my brother and I stopped paying, and the credits were there for a month. Check back later, 0 credits. The books are still there, but the credits we paid money for are gone. So that sucks. Fuck em.

Anticorp ,

That sounds illegal.

conciselyverbose ,

They make it pretty clear that you lose credits when you cancel. I don’t love that, but when you consider how much of a discount credits can be from the cheapest other way to buy some books, I don’t think it’s really unreasonable, either.

As for you seemingly repeatedly exchanging books for new ones, that’s definitely not the intent of them allowing you to return books you’re not happy with.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I meant exchanging the credits for the books, not books for books. Apologies if that came off as unclear.

And a lot of the online ads on podcasts and shows constantly state “it’s all yours to keep as long as you want” so my brother and I, both thought it was to all, not just the books. It’s why we were okay with paying for another month to allow more credits to stack up, as not every book was 1 credit.

conciselyverbose ,

Fair enough. It sounded like you were using “I’m not happy with this book” to return it for a credit and get a different book repeatedly.

I haven’t heard any podcast ads so I’m not sure if people are doing their own bad reads. The actual cancel page made it pretty clear to me that unused credits disappeared every time I turned it on and off.

I’ve never seen a book for more than one credit, so not sure if you’re in a country with a different setup or what.

wccrawford ,

It used to be 12 months, and I was so mad at that that I stopped subscribing, used all my credits, and basically never went back. I won’t even consider subscribing again so long as things I pay for don’t continue to be mine. I paid for the those credits, and they should be there forever until I use them. If they don’t like that, they should give my money back instead.

blindsight ,

Wait, really? This is the first I’ve heard of that. That’s ridiculous. If you don’t use your credit each month, then you’re just paying for nothing that month, essentially? Feels like that should be illegal.

nyakojiru ,
@nyakojiru@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yep I can confirm this. Happened the same for me and I decided to never renew the subscription again.

turkishdelight , to worldnews in Palestine Crisis Megathread III

Crisis is not the right word. It’s Palestinian Genocide, perpetuated by Israel, and supported by the Western world.

groupofcrows ,

Agreed but what has the Arab / Muslim world done to oppose this? Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan etc.

turkishdelight ,

Arabs fought multiple wars against Israel

groupofcrows ,

Recently, this year. What have the Arab/Muslim governments and public done to protest what is happening. I am not advocating for war/violence but is it just business as usual with Israel and USA?

turkishdelight ,

War with Israel means war with America and Europe. There is no Arab nation that can win that fight.

groupofcrows ,

I am not suggesting war. I am asking if there are demonstrations, have the governments and public done anything to protest what is happening. Have they closed embassies or degraded the relationship in any way?

turkishdelight ,

Most Arab countries don’t recognize Israel already.

Tenskwatawa ,

The public in just about all Arab countries have been doing unprecedented amounts of protests. Particularly in Jordan. I do see where you are coming from though in comparison to prior conflicts the tactic support the majority of Arab leadership has given Israel more and more of over the years has boiled over and been shown to be nothing less than treason. Britain can go to war for Poland but Jordan can’t go to war for Gaza, the PA security forces can’t even go to war for Gaza. It is a treacherous state of affairs in that regard. On the flip side Lebanon has been involved since nearly the start of this conflict and the pressure they’ve put on thus far isn’t to be scoffed at, though more could be done its been established that would be US intervention. More importantly though just look at what the Yemenis are doing, and they show no sign of backing down, having just come out of their war with the KSA and UAE to boot. Though I will say even for the Saudi leadershipleadership etc. etc. They’re all being forced to cut normalization with Israel and their relations with the US have strained. They have to or else all these protests might just turn into revolutions. (Saudi hasnt had protests I’m referring to Arab countries allied to the US generally)

groupofcrows ,

Thanks for the reply.
