Thanks for that detailed info. Sorry the other guy deleted.

qjkxbmwvz , to linuxmemes in I don't think I'll continue using Arch, btw

When I used Arch I updated once and it removed the running kernel and its modules. So when I plugged in a webcam it didn’t work, since the module was gone.

Not a catastrophe, but it was an off-putting user experience coming from Debian. Arch felt more like a desktop OS, Debian feels more like a server OS to me (updates generally warn/confirm when you need to restart services or the machine).

To each their own! Having more up to date stuff was a nice perk of running Arch, certainly.

Oh I love Debian on the desktop! More a comment on the feeling of the OS being very concerned about downtime and stability, with minimal “surprises.” Not a bad thing at all!

This has been the case for a long time. Just go on the website and find a drop box or location. They are pretty much all over the place.

What’s a long time? I literally scheduled a pickup last year for a pre-paid label and it was free. Anyway, another commenter seemed to say that it’s the shipper’s choice whether they cover the home pickup or not.

fckreddit , to asklemmy in How to get rid of the Indian curse?

Hi, I understand your frustrations because I have same frustrations as you. I have an M.Tech from IITM and still, I cannot seem find a job that I like. One that unleashes my creative potential. For now, I am considering some potential options, maybe they give you some idea of your own. One that I am considering is horticulture. However, the biggest drawback of this is that land can be expensive. Another option I have been considering is vocational courses like hotel management, or chef or something of similar vein like carpentry, electrician, etc. These are pretty stable and good jobs. Personally, I was considering baking, just because I find it fascinating. Another option that I am considering is immigrating to another country. I am considering Canada, which has a 5 year Permanent residency program. It costs like 230k rupees to apply for that visa.

I hope some of this helps you. If you need any help, you can DM me too. I will try as much as I can.

neidu2 , to nostupidquestions in Do you agree with my unpopular opinion about height in rapier fencing?

I’m just unsure how tall fencers are different than tall basketball players or height jumpers

BassTurd ,

Neither tall basketball players or high jumpers actively have someone actively trying to stab them in their larger mass sections. It would be better to compare with baseball where the strike zone can change depending on height. There are some good pictures of Jose Altuve standing next to Aaron judge in the MLB. Basically, tall people have a larger attack vector, and that doesn’t apply in the two sports you mentioned, where more height definitely carries significantly more advantages than disadvantages.

trxxruraxvr , to nostupidquestions in Do you agree with my unpopular opinion about height in rapier fencing?

It depends on the type of weapon and armor used. I did longsword fencing for a couple of years and i think there long arms are a bigger advantage. But i can see you being right for fencing with rapiers.

dragontamer , to nostupidquestions in Do you agree with my unpopular opinion about height in rapier fencing?

that short fencers are usually quicker and dodge easier.

Lulz.

No. It’s that shorter fencers must doge quicker to compete.

In my days in College, as a 5’9" average guy, I wasn’t much faster than anyone else. And without any reach I couldn’t keep up vs the taller people either.

Just being shorter doesn’t make you faster.

And a tall guy is usually bigger than a short one, so he’s a bigger target - and then there’s his juicy belly right on a convenient line of shots for a short fencer.

Just gain some flexibility and squat down deeper. The good tall fencers could hit me in my belly consistently despite me being shorter.

And while squatting down, your tall legs are longer anyway so you can lunge deeper when you do this maneuver. We shorter fencers cannot.

netvor , to nostupidquestions in Help me understand littering
@netvor@lemmy.world avatar

There’s no justification, it’s part of a broken culture.

As a Czech citizen living in a city, I see it happening all around me. By far not for everyone, but for a lot of people treating trash properly is considered a fool’s errand, virtual signalling, try-hard, you name it. This toxicity is unfortunately too common in the culture, and lot of people (including me) are just afraid or tired of being seen as a try-hard. It’s especially “awkward” to clean up.

Obvious littering is one thing but I recon most of the trash floating around is due to “practical littering”, where people, if trash cans are full, will just “neatly” place their beloved trash next to the can, kiss it goodbye and walk around as if wind does not exist. I’m probably too cynical but sometimes I imagine the same people going judgemental when they see trash caught up in bushes.

As for cigarette butts, that’s just dumb. I don’t think I’ve seen someone toss something like a plastic bottle or a bag on the ground, just like that, more than 5 times in my life, but with cigarette butts I see them all the time – most often just before they jump on a tram or a bus. (I’m strongly against violence and bullying, but rationality aside, to be honest, there’s a part of me that is wishing they had to pick it up and chew it.)

(Goddamn, about 2 weeks ago, someone must have left some balls of yarn outside, next to a trashcan, on straight street. I was walking to grocery shop and some kind of thread was unrolled along the pavement for, i kid you not, like 150m. It was bizarre. Could have been some serious TikTok/YTShorts material if someone wanted to make a “goody PSA”.)

My main OS (debian) ssd started throwing Io errors this Friday night and I had to work Saturday, only image I had laying around was Fedora Kinoite. So that’s what I’m running until I order a new drive. I’m getting my wife a new laptop soon and was considered silverblue (she’s a Mac user but very quick with tech in general).

Anyway after using it a few days, I think when I get my new drive I might just go ahead and put Kinoite on it. I’m used to running my dev stuff in containers anyway and toolbox makes it super easy. Rpm-ostree is a breeze (though it takes a minute to build on this ancient USB hdd, I’m replacing my dieing SSD with an nvme so I don’t foresee the ostree builds as being an issue).

I think immutable is absolutely the way forward, especially for less computer literate folks. It will keep them more protected and if they do mess up something the rollback is a breeze.

Tumbleweeds5 , (edited ) to linux in How to use Whatsapp Video Call on Linux?

I’m guessing all the people suggesting to ditch WhatsApp have never been to Brazil. Everything there is done with it, you can buy groceries, medicine, do banking, get services, take out, etc… Getting the whole country to change will never happen. So, yes, while some of us do install Signal, none will ever uninstall WhatsApp…

Yup, WhatsApp is basically the Brazilian WeChat. If I uninstall WhatsApp I basically lose contact with my mom and a bunch of other people since I live in Canada.

We’re seeing the fallout from a commercial service used for public interest communication falling in real time with Twitter, so many public service things that depended or still depend on Twitter have outright broke as it turns into raw sewage and people flee it. That should have NEVER been the main communications medium, and now the price is being paid. I understand as i too am in a place where WhatsApp is near-mandatory, but this is something that WILL have bad consequences sooner or later.

The UK isn’t quite that far, but it’s absolutely the dominant text messaging and calling app in the UK. Nobody uses the built in Android or Apple tools anymore, and I’m as likely to receive a WhatsApp voice call as an actual phone call these days.

I have Signal on my phone, but I’ve literally never had a cause to use it; I’ve simply got no contacts on there.

I’ll admit I completely missed your parentheses and thought you were talking about the builders of fences, and I was a little confused for a second.
