mostly a lurker here so far but it seems the comunity is developing well.

wheresyourshoe , to nostupidquestions in Lemmy vs kbin?

I started with accounts on both and found myself liking Lemmy better. I actually haven’t been on kbin in days.

I run an online business and have had quite a big increase in people not getting their items since the beginning of the year.

Wander , to selfhosted in Pro-tip: Self-hosting Lemmy? You can use object storage to back pict-rs (image hosting) to save a lot of money
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

Hello again! I just completed object storage migration. Here’s what I learned if you want to do it with an instance that’s already setup:

  1. Download the binary file for pict-rs from the project’s git repository.
  2. Stop the pict-rs container.
  3. Perform the migration as indicated in the pict-rs documentation. If it hangs at some point due to a missing file, re-run with --skip-missing-files.
  4. Verify that files have been migrated to object storage.
  5. Change docker-compose settings.
  6. And here the most important part… changes won’t be applied unless you run docker-compose up -d. Simply running docker-compose restart will NOT apply the new config. This might be obvious for docker users but I didn’t know about it and had to rollback the first time because it wouldn’t fetch images from object storage while they had already been migrated there.
TheBest , to showerthoughts in Lemmy communities need a distinct one word name for communities like how reddit has "subreddits"

Kbin calls theirs "magazines" and I like that a lot.

Mostly_Harmless , to RedditMigration in Did Karma really matter that much in Reddit?
@Mostly_Harmless@kbin.social avatar

Some subreddits require a certain level of karma to be able to post or reply to comments. I don't know if that was to help against bots or people who would make an account to avoid a ban or something. Other than that karma was just an ego boost for those who cared about such things.

paorzz , to android in For the people coming in asking what app for Lemmy. You don't need it. Lemmy is great on a mobile browser.
@paorzz@kbin.social avatar

I personally like using Memmy rather than the website. Although for kbin it’s ok, but only because there’s no app currently available.

solidgrue , to fediverse in Did the privacy concerns have been updated/planned for update?
@solidgrue@lemmy.world avatar

It's like email: after you send it off your own MTA, you have no control over what happens to the copy at the far end, or any other MTAs it happens to traverse.

ActivityPub does distribute updates to posts, including delete intents, but instances are not bound to honor it. Same as how recalling an email isn't guaranteed to work.

Disturbing? I'd say more that it's sobering. I think it should prompt people to think more carefully about their accountability for what and how they post. I also may come to change this opinion over time.

Narann OP ,

ActivityPub does distribute updates to posts, including delete intents

Oh! I thought that it was a limitation of the ActivePub protocol to not support delete intents because of “the Internet never forget”.

but instances are not bound to honor it.

Yes, totally make sense.

pglpm , to linux in Is there a clipboard manager with killring-like functionality?
@pglpm@lemmy.world avatar

If you right-click on the Klipper tray icon, select “Configure…” and then “Shortcuts”, you can assign shortcuts to move back and forth in the kill ring, and to paste. I have assigned S-v for backwards and S-C-v for forward. Then the usual C-v will paste. The tray icon also shows you the current selection (and the ones above and below) in the killring, as you move through it.

eyolf OP ,

That’s more or less what I do, but it’s not quite killring’y. The workflow I’m looking for is: paste as usual with ctlr-v, then press some shortcut to replace the pasted with the previous item in the “ring”, without having to go through the backwards process of first enabling klipper, then choosing item, and only then entering it.

But I’ll play around with it some more and see what I figure out.

pglpm ,
@pglpm@lemmy.world avatar

Gotcha. Yes, haven’t found anything that allows that specifically. But in my case I don’t need to enable klipper; it’s always active. No matter which windows I’m in, pressing C-v will paste whatever it’s in the clipboard; whereas pressing e.g. S-v C-v will choose the previous item in the clipboard and then paste it.

pglpm ,
@pglpm@lemmy.world avatar

PS: there’s also another functionality of Klipper that I use from time to time: you can make the whole “killring” appear, and choose the entry you want to paste with the mouse: as you click it it’s entered. This is also bound to a key (in my case S-w) and works no matter which window I’m in.

eyolf OP ,

Which functionality is that? I haven’t found anything that enters the selected item directly, without having to C-v it afterwards. Besides, the mouse is a thing I want to avoid… I played around with some other functions, however, and I found out that cycling through the history items works fairly well for me.

pglpm , (edited )
@pglpm@lemmy.ca avatar

For the list of all clipboard items, ready to be chosen: Klipper tray icon, right-click → Configure clipboard → Shortcuts→ “Open Klipper at Mouse Position”. You can choose from the list either with the up/down keys, or with the mouse.

Klipper’s item-cycling doesn’t require more keystrokes than Emac’s. For example, what I achieve in Emacs with C-y M-y M-y I achieve with Klipper with H-v H-v C-v (no need to operate with the mouse). H is the “hyper” or “super” key – but the keys are fully customizable.

pglpm ,
@pglpm@lemmy.ca avatar

PS: actually with Klipper I can go back and forth in the clipboard history too. I don’t know if this is possible in Emacs. For example, if I go back two history steps, and then realize that I went too far by one step, I’d type H-v H-v H-C-v C-v. The H-C-v is “undoing” the last H-v.

nix , to nostupidquestions in Do people get partners because as we get older we have less friends?

I think some people do this. However, I’m 30, live with my long term partner, and have a bigger friend group than I’ve ever had before, with weekly events. My partner isn’t a stand-in for socialization.

I’ll fully admit I have some advantages because I have no kids, and a job that pays decently and isn’t too demanding. I’ve met people through:

  • dating apps. This is how I met my partner and also a very good platonic friend
  • activist/interest groups. Got involved with a local urbanism group, now I know many of the people there
  • house parties. I got lucky here, I met someone that throws monthly house parties, went to those regularly, and made some very good friends that way
  • reconnecting with childhood friends. Again, lucky, but a few of my HS and college friends live in the same city as me and we reconnected and hang out.

The one bit of concrete wisdom I think I have here is that if you go to the same social place regularly you’ll see the same people and if you put yourself out there you’ll get to know some of those people. Activist groups or meetup groups are great because you probably already have some things in common.

jarvis2323 , to nostupidquestions in What was so special about the Apollo app?

Good news. You can instal Wefwef and get the Apollo experience on android now. Give it a try and see how awesome it’s been for us iOS users

incognito_15 ,

I can’t seem to find wefwef in the play store. Is it there or does one need to side load it.

I’m dumb. You gotta go to the GitHub and go to the app in the web wefwef.app and “install” it.

It seems to think my account on Lemmy.world doesn’t exist and won’t load posts.

jamie ,
@jamie@lemmy.gtfo.social avatar

It’s a PWA: wefwef.app

incognito_15 ,

Ah thanks. Took me a moment to realize that.

AllGoesUpMustGoDown ,

Using wefwef on lemmy.world currently does not work, ruud says he broke something. It just gives a problem fetching posts error for me.

Sharpie ,

You might want to try it again. A lot of Reddit alternatives have been struggling to keep up with the influx of new users.

You may also need to verify your email address. I had issues getting logged in when I created my account but I was using Mlem at the time.

With all of that said, I’m using wefwef right now.

incognito_15 ,

Yes it seems to be working well now with my Lemmy.world account, thanks!

PropaGandalf , to linux in Switch to Linux phone?

I’m waiting for my preordered shiftphone 8 to be released. They promised to cooperate with custom rom devs and improve the experience compared to their current model the Shift6mq which already can run postmarketos.

Also Nextcloud is a fantastic alternative to google/microsoft/apple cloud.

cianmor OP ,

Thank you for postmarketos. I had a look and it actually looks exactly like what I had in mind. They even have a community on lemmy at lemmv.ml/c/postmarketosI now have to check out the shiftphones and see if Linux supports apps like the banking apps, 2FA, etc. or if they can be emulated through some kind of Android laver. Otherwise it would have to be an Android OS without Google or a separate phone for those apps.

PropaGandalf ,

postmarketos is the most stable and matured mainline linux mobile os. For 2FA, banking apps and android apps in general there is waydroid ehich I already use on my fedora laptop.

cianmor OP ,

Do you know how the performance of waydroid is on postmarketos?

Early_To_Risa , to startrek in The Star Trek 'Where Should I Start' guide

I’m biased, but I think everyone should start with TNG. That’s peak trek for me.

TOS is great too, but I know it can feel really dated for a younger new viewer.

kd637_mi ,

I feel that TNG is getting pretty dated too, it’s older now than TOS was when it aired. It also has some pretty rough spots early on. Very good show and generally a good start for new viewers, but I feel a curated list of the best TOS episodes would also make a good start.
