Subnautica, without question.

I would certainly try.

Cowbee , to asklemmy in What books do you consider must reads?

While other books have made a larger personal impact, Piranesi is a wonderful, easy to read mystery novel with a charming, innocent protagonist that I wish I could read for the first time all over again.

It’s only a couple hundred pages as well, as opposed to the thousand page monsters many people love.

Nemo ,

Seconding this book. It’s one of the best books I’ve read this decade.

Piranesi is a real gem, I ran across it last year and it was absolutely delightful.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

I know! I love Piranesi as a character, the way he sees the world and justifies it is charming. Read it a few weeks ago and it hasn’t left my head, I hadn’t been so enthralled by a book since I was a kid.

yogthos ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

It left a big impression on me as well, the world the way he sees it is so peaceful and tranquil, but then you start gradually realizing the horrific situation he’s actually in. And this contrast between the way the character perceives his circumstances and the reality of the situation is kind of haunting.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s really well-written, absolutely. Wish I could wipe it from my mind and read it again anew.

It is rare that you run a book that sucks you in the way Piranesi does.

eldavi , to linux in Linux on iMac?

I’ve installed Gentoo, fedora and Debian on powerpc and Intel Macs a couple times in my past.

The Intel Macs were no more difficult than Windows machines and the powerpc Macs required an extra step for yaboot and time to fiddle with an of the services; but still not difficult.

I feel like the best you could possibly find is a game that uses a resource as payment that isn’t called “money,” but mechanically it would be the same.

But there is Minecraft. You can farm in that and you don’t need money (even though it exists in the form mentioned above). Or Project Zomboid which money exists as money but is only useful as toilet paper.

Dhs92 ,

There are farming-focused mod packs for Minecraft too

Not exactly moneyless but imagine quality of life improvements for Stardew Valley. That’s “Fields of Mistria”.

sic_semper_tyrannis , to linux in Is there any easy way to install a Linux distribution directly to a USB drive?

I used to have a SanDisk Extreme Portable running Ubuntu. If it was unplugged, my computer would boot Windows and when I plugged in the SSD to USB it would auto boot into Ubuntu. I have no idea how I did it though. It was my first time using Linux and I followed a guide online.

peaceb , to selfhosted in Open-source and self-hosted enterprise?

Will you have an infra team to support these apps? If the answer is no, I would self host anything business critical.

matcha_addict ,

A team? For what OP described, all you need is one person

peaceb ,

If they aren’t critical to the business, have a blast with it. But when the downed services prevent or distract from the invoiceable work, that is a problem.

As above; intel will be SO much easier

Macs don’t have a bios. But they boot easily into Linux (again intel)

Enjoy

MechKit , to gaming in Moneyless Harvest Moon-type game?

There is even a Star Trek-ish game where you have to produce to earn money to upgrade the ship for your crew. I get that it is a game mechanic, but seems like a perfect setting to not have money, and just concentrate on the people.
