Commenting to bring awareness to the ‘arrs. Radarr sonarr and lidarr will get you all the media you need organized perfectly. It runs on any device but take a few days to figure out. Once setup it’s a set it and forget it thing. Uses torrents and or usent so use a vpn. Mine runs on a 10 year old raspberry pi 2 and a few usb hdds. Been going strong with very little maintenance for 6 years at this point.

Agreed. Combined with a jellyfin instance and you will never want to come back. As said before, it takes a while to setup at first (especially if you download animes which aren’t exactly handled the same way), but when it’s done you’ll see you weekly episodes magically appear with nothing to do on your side, and that’s just great

I once took a job where we essentially repossessed trap houses from the inhabitants - even if they had once been legal tenants. That job might have been the closest I’ve ever got to public service. But as for everything else you say, I couldn’t agree more. Debt collection against individuals is a disgusting, exploitative and inherently corrupt business.

I read/watch a lot of old mysteries. Up until about 1980, it’s common for writers to put exact amounts of money in the dialogue. calcopiritus ,

In the world of computers, why would remembering numbers be the stop for new technologies?

Do you remember anyone’s public key? Certificate?

I don’t even remember domain (most) names, just Google them or save them as bookmarks or something.

The reason IPv4 still exists is because ISPs benefit from its scarcity. Big ISPs already paid a lot of money to own IPv4 addresses, if they switched to IPv6 that investnywould be worthless.

Try selling static IPv6 addresses as they do now with IPv4. People would laugh at them and just get a free IPv6 address from an ISP that wants to get new users and doesn’t charge for it.

The longer ISPs delay the adoption of IPv6, the longer they can milk IPv4 scarcity.

rottingleaf ,

I don’t even remember my old ICQ UIN. People usually do that.

frezik ,

For that matter, you should be getting an entire /60 at a minimum. Probably more like /56.

calcopiritus , (edited )

IPv6 addresses are practically endless, therefore their value is practically 0. ISPs justify charging extra for static IPv4 because IPv4 addresses do have a value.

If ISPs charge for static IPv6, then one of them could just give that service for free (while keeping the rest of the prices the same as their competitors). That would get them more customers while costing them nothing.

EDIT: I can’t give you an example of an ISP that offers free static IPv6 because there are no ISPs in my country that offer IPv6.

If that was the only issue with Reddit…

I don’t know what it is, but people there seem to be turning nastier and nastier. Like for instance, I posted some technical question on an electronics subreddit earlier, and something in my post - not sure what - landed me a -15 score, and people replying that if I didn’t like it I could fuck off. All I said was that some component wasn’t placed in a terribly convenient location in the new design, and the people who posted angry and rude comments weren’t even the designers. I mean what the actual fuck…

It seems a lot of subreddits I used to enjoy participating in are now full of people in a really antagonistic mood, and I often hesitate to post anything there now because I know it has a 50% change of turning nasty. And so instead, whenever possible, I post in the equivalent Lemmy community because even though they have a hundred times fewer users, it’s a much less frustrating experience.

I come interact on Reddit or Lemmy to have a good time, not to pick up a fight and get insulted by passive-aggressive internet lusers with frayed nerves.

ExtremeDullard , (edited )
@ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

The reverse happens on Lemmy too in some community. Like for example the fairly [email protected]: it’s a radical anti-capitalist, probably pro-communist and most assuredly pro-anarchist community, which is generally fine by me. But if you go in there to express a reasonable opinion that isn’t “burn all corporations” or “kill all capitalists” and expect to have a reasonable discussion, that’s just not gonna happen. You’ll just get modded down. It’s not so much a place to discuss anything than a big anti-capitalist circle jerk.

So you can find places where people are angry and nasty like on Reddit here, but usually you kind of know in which community you’ll find the anger. On Reddit, the anger is everywhere and for no reason, including on subbreddits that aren’t the least bit controversial. And even if you don’t criticize a product or diss a company or its products, most Redditors are ready to jump at you because… well, they seem to feel the need to be aggressive.

I’m fairly convinced the nature of the platform turns them like that: Reddit is subtly aggressive too and I’m convinced it rubs off on its users.

SharkEatingBreakfast ,
@SharkEatingBreakfast@sopuli.xyz avatar

A lot of Lemmy markets itself as a highly free-speech platform. Which is fine… but I’ve been around the internet enough to know that sites with anonymous free speech attract all kinds of folk who may not have the best of intentions.

Reddit is worse because society is worse

But it has always been bad

ExtremeDullard , (edited )
@ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I don’t know about that.

I’ve been hearing society is bad and getting worse from a variety of people since I was born in the height of the Cold War, and I’ve come to believe it’s only a perception. It’s no better or worse than it’s ever been: it’s just that as people get older and the standards of their youth change, they feel alienated by a world that is increasinbly not theirs anymore.

I’m old enough to be a grumpy old man but I keep reminding myself that this isn’t my world anymore either. And if I’m honest, I don’t see how the world of today is significantly worse than when I was a kid and we were all preparing for nuclear armageddon any minute now. And I always remind myself how my grandparents and my parents constantly told me to stop listening to “degenerate n*ger music” and quit wasting my time with those damn computer things and pursue more “manly” endeavors. I don’t want to become bitter like they were because I have no real reason to: the world of today really hasn’t done anything to me, it just feels weird.

However, I will say this: social media brings the worst out of people. It’s like reality TV of the 80’s and Usenet, but turbocharged. I think the utter social mediocrity that is social media contributes a lot to the perception that society is worse: it isn’t, it’s just that the worst of it is a lot more visible and more vocal.

Showroom7561 , to asklemmy in Why stand in line to board an airplane?

Two reasons:

I always take window seats, and don’t really want to hop over someone to get to my seat.

Black_Gulaman ,
@Black_Gulaman@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Dirk ,
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

No, that is the solution. The reason is that airlines intentionally plan with too little overhead space to save money.

Kbobabob ,

How does that save money? It’s not like they have to leave their bags behind if the overhead space is gone. It just gets checked instead.

ZombieBait ,

I don’t know about saving money, but around here airlines have been creeping up checked bag fees for years. You used to get one free checked bag but when they started charging for all checked bags people started trying to fit thier entire vacation worth of stuff into carry-on. The bags I see people trying to fit into the overhead now are huge and just barely fit in the compartment on smaller planes. The airlines know what’s up though since they’ll charge for checked bags but then announce repeatedly before the flight that they’re looking for volunteers to check their carry-on to its final destination for free. I actually saw one airline enforce the carry-on sizing device as people were boarding and forced any oversize bags to be checked. A lot of unhappy people that day.

Kbobabob ,

I’ve never been charged to check my bag at the gate.

JasonDJ ,

I’ve really never minded gate-checking, and when I travel alone (i.e. for work), I travel light and try to cram everything into a larger carryon and gate check it.

The biggest bottleneck on the way out is waiting at baggage claim. Gate checked bags are returned to you at the tarmac or at the end of the PBB, and sometimes they are there waiting for you before you even get to it, making it the quickest way out of the airport.

kadu , to youshouldknow in YSK if you've built a computer and it won't boot, sometimes the issue can be resolved by taking the memory out and putting it back.
@kadu@lemmy.world avatar

Many modern motherboards will also do memory training the first time you boot with new RAM sticks, and sometimes this is very slow. Your PC will boot to a black screen and behave exactly like it would with a dead CPU or RAM… there’s no visual feedback.

This once caught me off guard and I spent a good hour panicking trying to diagnose a non-existing issue. Sometimes, you just literally have to wait in a black screen for a while.

Shirasho ,

This seriously stressed me out when I put my last computer together. I was patient and waited hoping it would fix itself (which it did), but my heart sank when I didn’t see anything on the monitor.

halcyoncmdr ,
@halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world avatar

This 100%. Had a buddy recently that went as far as buying an entirely new PSU and memory kit trying to troubleshoot over 3 days. He just needed to let it sit for about 15 minutes to memory train the first time.

BassTurd ,

I have never run into this with any builds, at least in the last 15 or so years. Is this a more recent thing, or am I now finding out that my first build, circa 2007 on my new DFI lanparty mobo, may have not been a defect and I’m just impatient? That was DDR2 and PATA for a time frame.

kautau ,

Yup, I put new RAM in a brand new laptop after booting it up only once previously. Boot it up, black screen. I got insanely scared I messed up the display to mobo ribbon or something. Nope, just was doing its RAM thing and sat on a black screen for like a minute before actually booting to bios

JATtho ,

I put too way too much effort in this reply… Yes… it’s nerve racking, especially if you are resorting to BIOS flashback to boot the CPU on an older (new) board.

Can’t get visuals (except maybe leds/indicators on the motherboard itself) when your CPU is incapable of accessing the ram or the devices yet. All external devices normally communicate through the RAM. (And by external, I mean not on the CPU package) Yet, the CPU has to solve out this chicken-and-egg problem of how to progress from the cold-boot without knowing what external RAM is installed. There are plethora of timing/clock-cycle/voltage settings for one stick of ram, which are tested on POST. Establishing sane DDR5/4 parameters is non-trivial. (I think it is order of +20!, twenty factorial: 2432902008176640000, if there were no starting point of XMP, JEDEC etc.)

I use hand tuned settings for DDR4, and on cold boot, the BIOS adjust the settings which I didn’t forbid it to do. Unless I unplug the PSU from the wall, the BIOS won’t retrain the memory again. I suspect my settings still aren’t 100% stable. (over period of years) Non-cold-boot assumes the ram works 100% same on each power up. If some OC setting drifts past a threshold once the system is heat soaked or receives more EMI interference, this could provoke a crash/BSOD etc. in absurd theory having a busy wifi router next the ram could cause the bios to select more robust/conservative settings to counter the EMI interference. Would be fun to know, if this would be true.
