rtxn , to nostupidquestions in Can Lemmy posts be indexed by Google or other search engines?

I recently saw that someone was making a keyword search engine that works across the fediverse. I’ll try to find the project.

edit: found it, unsurprisingly it’s called lemmy-search. Although it only seems to work on Lemmy instances.

falconfetus8 ,

That’s cool, but OP is specifically asking about finding things on Google.

"...or other search engines?"

GammaScorpii OP ,

Yeah I meant just a neat way of searching for user posts.

Google probably ingrained a little so that’s what I gravitate to, but if there are better ways of searching that’s helpful too. Having a search engine do it is good because you might come across old forum posts as well as Reddit, but over the years Reddit just became more prevalent. Obviously these new federated sites won’t yet have all the usable content, but I’m wondering if the process will be the same once they do.

sadreality ,

Google gutted their search over last few years.

No, sandar I don't want 69 pages of SEO optimized trash

PillowTalk420 , to nostupidquestions in So how long until the Fediverse is monetized?
@PillowTalk420@lemmy.world avatar

Give it 15 years.

I’ve been online since 1990; 10-15 years seems to be the maximum time a community can live without shitting itself over greed or something new and better coming along to scoop up users.

That said, things like Usenet and IRC still technically exist… They’re just niche now. The way this shit works is more like those, so it will likely never fully disappear.

Bazoogle ,

To be fair, there is a line between greed and monetization. Monetization can be simply to fund servers costs and labor. Especially as the community grows, it’s just going to get more and more expensive. I think a donation page or a toggle-able ads option (off by default) would be great ways for users to support the site to fund the costs without it being greedy. Both options could give some sort of donor badge as a thank you, because there’s no features involved with it so people don’t feel forced to donate/support.

o_oli ,
@o_oli@lemmy.world avatar

I think the key really is transparency. I’m not going to throw money into a black hole and hope it does some good, but if there is some level of transparency showing running costs plus deficit/surplus towards those costs then I wouldn’t mind contributing.

majere ,

Or, for the time being, this platform never takes off and reddit’s moat temporarily prevails. Eventually Reddit will die, but no one can predict when.

Fezz ,

It will be interesting to see to what level the server traffic changes in Reddit. I was looking at a post last night (for was still kinda working if you weren’t logged in) and it was a lot of confused people wondering what all the fuss was about, very few people ppl against reddits actions, and it clicked, the majority of people against spez had just left once the apps stopped working.

I checked the user history of those defending Reddit, all very young accounts so I guess ppl who joined recently and only know the Reddit app are left, but the older users… Gone.

Make sure you’re not using any special characters in the name (identifier). Just lower caps letters. Not sure about numbers.

The error message informing you of this is a bit borked.

I currently use Newpipe which I don’t really like as you can’t log in but it is the only mobile client I found bearable. I’m open to new suggestions.

Dettweiler42 , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Why does a car have both a motor and engine?

“Engine” is used to describe an assembly of parts that contain a motor and the systems to make the motor more efficient and self-sustaining.

“Motor” is used to describe a device that converts energy into motion

Bringing up details from my comment below, the motor component of a traditional car engine is the piston/crank/cylinder assembly; as this is the part that converts fuel into motion. The rest of the engine is a necessary part to keeping the motor running.

However, when it comes to cars, people tend to use the terms interchangeably. If you have a hybrid car, your engine will have two types of motors (combustion motor and electric motor).

SmokingMenthols OP ,

Thank you for breaking down the definition. I’d heard that about motors as “energy converters” but not specifically the definition difference of engines needing a “self sustaining fuel source”. All engines are technically heat powered motors, but only heat powered motors are engines then, right?

Dettweiler42 ,

Think of an engine as a self-contained package. You give it fuel, and it converts that fuel into heat, rotational motion, electricity, and cooling. It also lubricates and cools itself. Technically speaking, the piston/crank system is the motor component of the engine. The alternator, AC compressor, and water pump are engine accessories.

Dettweiler42 , (edited )

Not all engines are heat powered motors, and vis versa. I should have clarified earlier as well, but motors convert energy into motion. Engines have a motor, but contain other systems and accessories to aid the motor, and have the potential to create other forms of energy from that conversion process.

Think of an engine as a self-contained package, also known as an assembly. Multiple systems come together to form the engine. You give it fuel, and it converts that fuel into heat, rotational motion, electricity, and cooling. It also lubricates and cools itself. The piston/crank system is the motor component of the engine. The intake, exhaust, and cooling systems are part of the engine, and they allow the motor to keep working efficiently. The alternator and AC compressor are engine accessories.

It gets much easier to understand if you picture other types of engines. In a jet engine, the turbine section is the motor core of the engine. On a steam engine, the motor is the steam piston component that drives the wheels.

I edited my original comment to help clear up the half-asleep explanation I gave before.

I have the astro A40s. the mixamp doesn’t seem to work on arch with both outputs, but you can always get just the headphones without the mixamp.

the A50s are wireless, which implies there’s no mix amp

I’m a big Baxter fan, never really read anything by Pratchett somehow, and I ended up with the same opinion pretty much. I gave up reading after three books, they just didn’t seem to be going anywhere or anything really happening. Great idea, it just ended up being boring.

All I can say is you should really change that… Pratchett is one of my favorite authors of all time, and I do a lot of reading!

son_named_bort , to showerthoughts in Lemmy is so good right now for no particular reason

It helps that it’s a fairly small community, which gives it an old school internet forum vibe. Hopefully it retains this vibe as the site continues to grow.

GatoB ,

I hope

Veltoss ,

I’ve been on the internet long enough to say it won’t. It will last a long time depending on the design of the system that creates the communities (mods, upvotes/downvotes, rules, algorithms, etc), but even that is limited because eventually every community reaches the size it needs to to encourage toxicity, echo chambers, circlejerks, and attracting even more toxic people from outside the communities.

It took reddit many years to start reaching that point though, I hope it takes these federated sites longer. And hopefully due to their design, they can keep most of the toxic people isolated.
