Bone apple tea

Earthwormjim91 , to nostupidquestions in Would dinosaurs be white meat or red meat?

They wouldn’t be red meat because that’s a mammalian thing.

Depending on the dinosaur and how they move they would either be white meat like poultry or dark redder meat like game birds (geese, ducks, cranes, etc).

A lot of the theropod dinosaurs would have very dark meat legs and white meat breast since they don’t do much flying. Sauropods would likely be very dark meat since they did a lot of walking around grazing.

laylawashere44 ,

Duck is considered red meat essentially. It’s certainly cooked medium rare and such.

Earthwormjim91 ,

Culinarily yeah they’re basically red meat. At least according to the USDA though, only mammalian meat can be considered “red meat”. Duck would be dark meat.

That’s kinda splitting hairs though at this point since plenty of fowl have darker red meat than plenty of mammals. All pork is considered red meat even though plenty of it is culinarily white meat.

@bossito@lemmy.world avatar

eldopgergan , to nostupidquestions in If intelligent life is found in the universe will it change religion(s)?

Religion would change if religious people learn to look beyond 6 feet in front of them, but I guess that’s less possible than proof of extraterrestrial life.

curiosityLynx ,

Not all religious people are the Westborough Baptists, rabid creationists, prosperity gospel followers and massive hypocrites you know personally. Nor are the rest all militant fundamentalists who think terrorism is a good idea.

There are Jains, parts of the Salvation Army and many more that are perfectly reasonable and don't go against anything science has to say. Because at the end of the day, religions and science have very little overlap, as most religious beliefs can neither be proven nor disproven.

eldopgergan ,

I agree and disagree as well.

Religion as it is refers to a way of life. Ideally what your way of life is should not change with what others do or not do.

But realistically, what we have seen is that religion lets people justify their own shortcomings just because they are part of a secret group and then force their “way of life” on others.

At the same time, holding onto a single “way of life” is intrinsically prone to mistakes, since we are never given complete knowledge about everything and will never have it. We need to change constantly to be better versions of ourselves.

If there are people who believe in something greater than them, and are prepared to change if they have the necessary proof, then I’m afraid I can’t call them religious. I’d call them spiritual.

That profile is very much the early adopters of any new platform or technology. If you described the early users of the internet as a whole, it would be very similar.

I don’t think anything particular is keeping other users away, it’s early. We need evangelist, I suspect that most normies don’t even know the fediverse exists, let alone are considering using it.

We just need to continue to grow the reach of the fediverse, don’t give up if it seems a bit bare and give everyone else a reason to join us

Wolf_359 , (edited )

I actually like where the Fediverse is now. And I think a long trajectory of slow growth will be very good for it.

Reddit is a great example of the “enshitification” process at work. A community grows way too big, way too fast. People don’t adopt the norms, the norms change. That’s why the front page of Reddit is full of “Am I ugly?” Posts when it used to be (more) high quality discussions with a bunch of nerds. Hacker news is a good example of a slow-growing community which has mostly maintained an environment of intellectual curiosity.

Excellent blog post about this here: www.marginalia.nu/log/82_killing_community/

The idea of old sites dying is what inspired me to hunt down really old hobby blogs and save up their images. Then contact creators and anybody who replied (sometimes it was a bit of detective work to find an old email) and signed off was reposted on my blog. Those old geocities type websites aren’t going to last forever without maintenance.

I mentally associate the concept the most with the late 2000’s when Encyclopedia Dramatica (a troll wiki dedicated to making fun of people) was at peak popularity and could ruin peoples lives if an article was made on a person there. All you had to do was type in a persons name on google, and chances are their ED article was one of the first results. But then not even 2 years into the next decade, ED imploded because the site admins wanted the place to be more sterile and profitable, and they were tired of being threatened by lawsuits.

You could argue that Encyclopedia Dramatica lives on in spirit as Kiwifarms, but at this point Kiwifarms struggles to even remain online 24/7 because they managed to piss off the wrong people.

Nothing is eternal on the internet. The only way to save information is to actively back it up and maintain it.

Candelestine , to nostupidquestions in Can the fediverse scale up indefinitely?

No, after a sufficient amount of time has passed, we would run out of useable matter and energy in the universe. This theorized end-state of heat death puts a finite cap on the size of the Fediverse.

Constrained to Earth, it’d probably be fine. Though I do see it splintering eventually, with sub-communities existing independently from the main organism.

@davetansley@lemmy.world avatar

Leaving Twitter for Mastodon barely had an impact. I was just about done with that whole place, with or without Musk in charge.

Reddit is different… I still loved using it. I had my subscriptions honed, all my interests represented. I suffered none of the toxicity that others saw. Not sure if that was just because I mostly used smaller, niche-interest subs or because I mostly lurked and seldom posted? It was all friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining, a stream of consciousness that I could dip in to whenever I wanted to.

So I’m not leaving Reddit because of the experience, but more on principal (both the API kerfuffle and a general aversion to ad-revenue models, which are clearly harmful to society). Principals sadly don’t give me something to read over breakfast…

I hope Lemmy can become that stream of consciousness in time. I’m trying to do my bit by being an active contributor rather than a lurking grazer.

basskitten ,

Same here. Lemmy is rising quickly though, I have no doubt it will be a sufficient Reddit replacement soon enough. I’ve been using Apple News as my “read over breakfast” app. I already pay for the sub anyway, and once I set it up with a bunch of sources/topics I was interested in, it became a pretty good reading experience.

JackGreenEarth ,

I hope you consider an open news alternative, or even a closed one slightly less bad than Apple. Good for you for not using Reddit though.

I fear that sounded too condescending, I seriously want to encourage you to not use Apple without making you sound like an idiot.

I don’t think you are an idiot, just the same as the other millions of people who were taken in by Apple’s ‘privacy’ and ‘simplicity’, while not realising the price gouging, right to repair smashing, closed source, keeping everything ensnared its ecosystem that it really is.

majere ,

We might have to accept we’re on the “losing” side, e.g. Lemmy will never have the numbers our subreddits had. We’ll have smaller communities and less content, but hopefully better conversation.

kobra ,

Honestly reddit lost too. The quality drop in content and comments is noticeable and unlikely to get better. Meanwhile lemmy/kbin/fediverse in general seems to be thriving with hope and energy.

TitanLaGrange ,

decus ,

I made the transition from Digg to Reddit way back when, and like you didn’t see a lot of the toxicity of Reddit likely by having a honed list of subreddits. 99% of my time was spent lurking tho over the last years - so now I’m going to take more initiative and engage more with the platform

I was never big on Twitter myself… I made an account when it first came out and never used it… and then for a high school unit for something we were required to make accounts (I graduated 10+ years ago… so that in and of itself is scary). I’ve never liked twitter. It always seemed to be screaming into the void.

Mastodon I really appreciate the real conversations with real people, especially when they are interested in what I have to say. I made a post about getting rid of lawns and had people from all angles of the argument discussing with me about it. It felt… healthy?!

Well, as healthy as internettin’ is.

aeki ,

Yes, I never got into Twitter but I have an active Mastodon life. I also appreciate smaller communities where you can talk to people like you said. On big platforms I don’t even bother commenting, much less making a post. It will just fall into the void.

cheeseblintzes ,
@cheeseblintzes@lemmy.world avatar

You’re right… it’s just not worth it for the most part on larger platforms. I’m not sitting here trying to argue with anyone-- we can have a civilized discussion that ends in a disagreement on smaller platforms. On larger platforms it always turns into fights and pilings-on. It is gross.

zaphod , (edited )

Radio waves always propagate at the speed of light, it’s just that the effective speed of light in copper and glass fibre is lower than that in air/vacuum.

This means that if you have long cables at some distance you’ll get a lower delay by using low earth orbit satellites like Starlink. Assuming a total distance via satellite of 1000km and the effective speed of light in glass fibre to be 2/3 c, cables over 667km will have a higher delay than the satellite.

mindbleach ,

Some fiber-optic cables are faster than others, because they’re full of air. Hollow-core fibers have a large central cutout and/or a close hexagonal packing of smaller glass tubes. The latter are technically a “photonic crystal.”
