Omega_Haxors ,

DW i’m not talking about the economics, he was right about that. I’m referring to the stuff he want back on later in life upon finding out more. Scientific socialism is all about growing and learning from your mistakes and even though Marx was initially wrong about a lot of stuff, his ideology steered him right back on the correct path; proving that even a flawed person can become a force of overwhelming good through following socialism. Social fascists (liberals) will point to all the bad things a socialist has said/done not realizing that shit gets better with time, while their people start bad and get worse over the period of their life because their ideology is one of exploitation and evil.

@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

I had a free book reward from Thriftbooks, which I used for a copy of Long Dark Teatime of the Soul by Douglas Adams. When it came, I was kinda bummed that some kid had scribbled on the title page, but eh, it was free. At least it was a first edition in otherwise good condition, I won’t complain.

As I was reading, I got a little itch in the back of my mind, and it of curiosity looked up his signature. Turns out, it looks like some kid’s scribbling https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/501fffbd-0af5-47a5-8bbf-2dbac3cdd1dd.jpeg

Probably why no one realized.

So I got a signed first edition, which goes for about $200, totally free.

acid_falcon , to asklemmy in What are the most unconventional sources of white noise you use?

Not too weird, but I found this accidentally: a subwoofer under my bed (the speakers that came with it broke)

I was thinking I could grab one from goodwill. It just needs to be the subwoofer that has the input and it’s g2g.

    acid_falcon ,

That’d probably be fine. I mean I haven’t tested it a lot, but I think the secret sauce is just that it’s all bass from the subwoofer. Let me know how it goes

    intensely_human ,

There are actually videos of warp engine noise.

Have you found a way to loop that MP3 with crossfade? My current problem is there’s a small noticeable gap of silence between repeated tracks.

    acid_falcon ,

Man I know, and I tried them. None of them were quite right, they didn’t accomplish what I wanted. Like the sound on the show is just a little different in real life. Part of it I think, is the treble (insert tribble joke)

It really all clicked when I fucked up and broke the speakers so it’s all coming from the subwoofer

    acid_falcon ,

Also no I didn’t solve that problem, I’m using an app called blackplayer, every ten hours it fades in and out for like a three second period. That’s on my to-do list to fix, but not a priority because it doesn’t bother me too much

    Perhaps Handbrake.

But if you do care about the quality, then you should just download those movies in higher quality than DVD. Like this you’re just getting 480p/576p with visible compression artifacts at the same file size.

    themurphy OP ,

    Thanks, I’ll try handbreak!

The problem is the DVDs is in a language I couldn’t find reliably to download. I once had access to a private tracker that had these things, but they got shut down, and I was on a long vacation while they migrated.

So I missed the window and I haven’t been able to get in since.

GenderNeutralBro , to fediverse in Should instances defederate with other instances anymore if we can filter instances out on our end?

    Yes, this is still necessary.

It wouldn’t make sense to put the onus to block every bad instance onto every single user.

Consider the extreme use case, which is obviously CSAM. I rely on my instance admins to handle that for me. If I had to painstakingly block every instance that has poor moderation (or worse), I’d simply stop using Lemmy. The “all” feed would be utterly unusable.

Also, admins need control over what’s in their own database, potentially for legal reasons.

    ArcaneSlime ,

Anarchocommunists like to gatekeep and pretend that state communists are actually right wing, because they can’t fathom that their ideology could have some dark shameful parts too. Sorta like when republicans claim the nazis were socialist because they don’t want to face the dark parts of their ideology. Turns out though, the tankies are leftists, and are communists, they just either think the “stateless” part comes after the party gains totalitarian control through murdering dissenters, or they actually admit that will never happen and just prefer totalitarian control they think they’ll be a party member of.

    ArcaneSlime ,

Eeehhhhhh no, that’s the gatekeeping “communism is when good” thing I was talking about.

    shani66 ,

Communism, definitionally, cannot have a state. That isn’t gatekeeping. Your can argue about getting there but then tankies generally support states with no interest in actually doing that.

    ArcaneSlime ,

Sometimes, sometimes they at least pretend they intend on abolishing the state even though we all know they’re lying even just by virtue of “even if you’re well intentioned once it exists it will never kill itself.” But also that’s why they aren’t marxists, they’re state communists, they take all the leftist communist ideals +state i.e “not right wing.” Right wing =! “when state.”

because they aren’t people 99% of the time, it’s a computer program. It’ll keep attempting, and if you do engage it will switch over to a real person once they have someone hooked.

They even have ones that garner attention, like shuffling noises, saying “Oh I’m sorry, hang on a second” and other gimics to keep you on the line and start engaging. You’d be surprised at how many people will say “Oh sure” out of politeness.

As for cost, to run a virtual machine in the cloud running 24/7 trying all the numbers one by one in the database would cost… pennies. We’re talking probably less than 5 bucks a month.

They are going by volume, so the overall successes matter and the reason for why the rest are unsuccessful doesn't matter.

Phone numbers get reused all the time, so if they pull the number from the pool they miss a possible future opportunity. This is important when lack of success would massively shrink their pool of numbers at no real cost savings to them since they are going for volume anyway.

Basically you are asking from a logical and well intended point of view, but telemarketers are approaching it from a maliciously logical volume method that benefits from stumbling across enough gullible people to make the rest of the volume worth it.
