NotThatKindofDoctor , to books in What did everyone read in June?

I read when When Women were Dragons! It was excellent! I read a couple other books too but this one really stood out to me. It was a coming of age story that was a metaphor for basic feminist theory.

notapantsday , to nostupidquestions in What is so great about Reddit/Lemmy apps?

I've always used the browser, both on mobile and desktop. I tried several different apps but none of them supported tabs, so I couldn't browse reddit the way I was used to and I quickly uninstalled all of them.

Plus, I couldn't find anything wrong with using reddit in a browser. I was on old.reddit with RES when I was using my laptop and on the .compact version on mobile (until it was recently discontinued).

Maybe plant a bug at the neighbors house

FarFarAway OP ,

Lol right. They live alone. They’re not discussing its with anyone else, as far as we know. Im not sure who they would even talk to if they had the chance. They’re kind of a shut in.

I do suppose, if there’s a device, and it makes a sound when they turn it on. Other than that i fear all I would hear is shuffling, really loud music, and whomever has replaced Rush Limbaugh on the radio.

boredtortoise , (edited )

It might still even out the playing field. Then you can offhand mention some song lyrics or radio talk show lines

Aegis: 2fa. Free, open source.

Auto Auto-rotate: per app rotation settings. Free, open source.

Missed notifications reminder: adds a repeating sound or vibration if a watched app has an active notification. Ie, you got an email when you were away from your phone so every few minutes your phone makes a beep or whatever so you don't need to check the screen constantly. Free, open source.

MJ PDF: simple, fast PDF reader. Free, open source.

Snap drop: web based instant file transfer between devices. Free, open source.

X-Plore: the only file manager that ever clicked for me. Dual pane that's really intuitive. Absolutely packed with features (connects with local network, cloud providers, ftp, ssh, dlna, has file sync)

The evolution and items system layered on top add a ton of replayability. I agree that it needs to come to steam, I’ve played a bunch on my steam deck and it feels like a hit if they can get a bigger audience to see it

Orban , to books in What did everyone read in June?

I have read Our Revolution by Bernie Sanders.

I can recommend it to anyone who are interested in the politics of US. Bernie talked about the main problems in the US. He talked about discrimination, the corruption, populism, wealth distribution and the negative effect of far capitalism overall.

The best bit of the book in my opinion, that you will understand why’s the society so against socialism’s ideas, even if it would significantly improve their life in many cases.

TerryMathews , to selfhosted in Best/least expensive GPU for decent Plex transcoding?

Honestly, don’t bother with a dGPU and get a 12th or 13th gen Intel Core chip with QSV. Intel quietly tuned it up to the point where it’s faster than nVidia’s NVENC engine even in the latest gen plus you don’t have mess around with the uncap streams hack and you’re transcoding through system RAM not dGPU RAM, so far less likely that your stream limit will be artificially constrained by memory limitations.

To answer the question you asked though, the nVidia NVENC is the best solution on a dGPU. It’s performance is largely the same across the same board generation, with one exception in the GTX 10X0 series. The absolute cheapest card you can lay your hands on that has an NVENC engine is the 1050TI.

The caveat is the 1070 and 1080 have two NVENC engines. It will double max number of streams in theory, however in reality you’re memory bound on those cards and it’s more like a 33% bump.

WestyFlyer OP ,

Are you saying that I’d get better results with a 12 or 13th gen processor than with an older dGPU? Interesting I hadn’t even thought of going this route. Always considered a dGPU was the best way to go.

TerryMathews ,

Yes.

And to some of the child replies, I think there’s a question of scale that often gets overlooked. In all these discussions, there seems to be two different groups commingling: ones who just need 1-2 simultaneous streams, and ones who are doing true whole-house-plus systems.

I’m serving subtitles-enabled streams to (mostly) Roku clients - who need the server to burn in the subtitle track for some insane reason. It’s nothing for my Plexbox to be serving 6 simultaneous streams. A 4790K would definitely not cut it for me.

Cloudflare, reverse proxy, fail2ban, set up a vpn to access your local machines

betternotbigger , to selfhosted in Which Dynamic DNS Service are you using?

If you only need public access to things like HTTP or SSH you don’t necessarily need to run dynamic ip and just setup Cloudflare Tunnels. So far I haven’t needed to put anything public that doesn’t run on the provided tunnels.

starkcommando OP ,

Where are the settings for these tunnels located in Cloudflare? I was looking around the website last night but didn’t have any luck.

betternotbigger ,

Look under the Zero Trust category and then once there you’ll see another menu item called Access. There you’ll find Tunnels, in addition to Tunnels you can add an Application in the same Access menu to create policies that only allow certain clients to connect.

I tried commenting on two videos yesterday and included links to topic-related websites, and they were deleted.

I checked the TOS and they caution about including inappropriate links in replies, but those weren’t that.

I seems the channel can include links but users can’t. Haven’t tested it much past that point either.
